Happy 2024 eclipse day to those in North America!

Is it a good time to mention that NASA has an open solicitation to support sustainability for scientific open source software?

We are also having a town hall on Tuesday, April 2 at 2 pm ET to talk about it.

See details here:

A nice article about the transformative work in South Africa over the last 20 years to make the astronomy community more inclusive and representative.

I taught at NASSP for 10 years. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done and so lucky for my engagement with the amazing students (now scientists).

I think it has been a successful 20 years of effort, though as mentioned, plenty more work to be done!

Sonce yesterday’s post was fairly popular for my standards, let’s try another ask me anything during my train commute!

Over the next hour, ask me anything on NASA, open science, or astronomy!

On the train again - it’s been a while but gives me some free time!

Does anyone want to ask me anything about NASA, open science, astronomy, or anything else?

Update: off the train, but I’ll check back if there are any more questions tomorrow.

This opinion piece is written by former NASA administrator Dan Goldin on future space based astronomy observatories.

There is a lot more nuance (like funding profiles) but I think it does inspire some interesting discussion points and thought.

With Halley's Comet and the Challenger Disaster, the first few months of 1986 were an incredible formative time for those interested in space. Most of my vivid, early memories date from that year and I would guess it is probably pretty similar to others in the space field that are of a similar age.

"Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits."

This is part of Article 27 in the UN Declaration of Human Rights proclaimed on 10 December 1948. But what does it mean to "to share in scientific advancement and its benefits"? It is an interesting question especially as that concept has evolved over the past 75 years.

In September, NASA released their first interactive graphic novel that imagines the story of Callie Rodriguez, the first woman to explore the Moon.

The second issue also highlights how Open Science will help share the discoveries made by lunar exploration.

The discovery of a super massive black hole from when the Universe was only ~450 million years old is pretty amazing.

The observations from JWST and the Chandra X-ray observatory were both required to see this.

The NASA press release also includes links to Open Access versions of the papers including the preprint and the AAS. This is part of SMD’s policy on making science more accessible including in our press releases.

What bureaucracy to just do, what bureaucracy to change, and what bureaucracy to ignore until it is replaced by something else.

This is a really interesting article and podcast episode on "When Diversity meets feedback" by Erin Meyer. There are a lot of great points about how to give feedback across age, gender, and cultures.

One of the most interesting points was that giving feedback, especially unsolicited, may trigger the "flight or fight" response. This can even happen if you ask - people rarely so no, but that still can trigger the response!
