They're talking about grade inflation at the Ivies again. And OK, fair. Everyone gets an A. But can we also talk about educator inflation? Educator inflation is a good thing! By educator inflation I mean: the typical educator at a top tier university today, is miles better at educating, than the typical educator at that same institution 50 years ago.

The field of education is not static. There are constant advances in how material is presented, and how students are supported.

@crawfordsm@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke I would also add student inflation - I’m so impressed with the college students I come across today and how much more advanced and skilled they are compared with myself from that same period 25 years ago.

I might have a very biased sample but undergrads seem to be doing now what I was doing in grad school then.

In more happy news, NASA has just updated their policy on releasing software to make it easier to release their software as open source.

This is really into the policy weeds, but it makes it easier to release scientific software, develop software openly, and contribute to existing open source projects.

Is it a good time to mention that NASA has an open solicitation to support sustainability for scientific open source software?

We are also having a town hall on Tuesday, April 2 at 2 pm ET to talk about it.

See details here:

A nice article about the transformative work in South Africa over the last 20 years to make the astronomy community more inclusive and representative.

I taught at NASSP for 10 years. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done and so lucky for my engagement with the amazing students (now scientists).

I think it has been a successful 20 years of effort, though as mentioned, plenty more work to be done!

This opinion piece is written by former NASA administrator Dan Goldin on future space based astronomy observatories.

There is a lot more nuance (like funding profiles) but I think it does inspire some interesting discussion points and thought.

NASA's Transform to Open Science has released their Open Science 101 curriculum! The curriculum introduces the skills and tools to better understand how to make your science more accessible, inclusive, and reproducible. There is an online course and will be opportunities for in-person and virtual trainings.

Those completing the course will receive the NASA TOPS Open Science badge linked to their ORCID accounts.

This is a really interesting article and podcast episode on "When Diversity meets feedback" by Erin Meyer. There are a lot of great points about how to give feedback across age, gender, and cultures.

One of the most interesting points was that giving feedback, especially unsolicited, may trigger the "flight or fight" response. This can even happen if you ask - people rarely so no, but that still can trigger the response!

When discussion an example of an LLM generated manuscript with incorrect information accepted to a predatory journal, I mentioned that the internet could potentially become useless if it was filled with incorrect but plausible generated information.

I think I really shocked the group when I added ‘In my opinion, this could happen as soon as the next six months.’

This highlights the importance in high quality trusted sources of information, transparency, and reproducibility.

Working together with IBM, NASA has released an open-source geospatial artificial intelligence (AI) foundation model for Earth observation data. This is based on Landsat Sentinel-2 data set and has a range of potential applications.

If you want to see what is potentially possible, I would suggest checking out some of the demos at the end of the article.

A common question I get onn is ‘if I share my code, what if someone misuses it?’

This is usually combined with ‘I don’t have time to document my code to explain what it is doing.’

What are your thoughts on how to have a conversation around this concern?

With Halley's Comet and the Challenger Disaster, the first few months of 1986 were an incredible formative time for those interested in space. Most of my vivid, early memories date from that year and I would guess it is probably pretty similar to others in the space field that are of a similar age.

The discovery of a super massive black hole from when the Universe was only ~450 million years old is pretty amazing.

The observations from JWST and the Chandra X-ray observatory were both required to see this.

The NASA press release also includes links to Open Access versions of the papers including the preprint and the AAS. This is part of SMD’s policy on making science more accessible including in our press releases.
