MAGIP and TNGIC in 2024

I just came off two conferences with one being in Montana and one being in Tennessee. Both Geo related. It was my first time attending the MAGIP conference. Not that you need a long overly drawn out review of both - here are some of the highlights: TNGIC was fun. It was a different approach this year focused on people more than "the usual conference thing".

@sgillies @rjhale1971 When I was searching Job in the US (coming from France) it blew my mind how many folks "require" you to know ESRI stuff (while you can nearly do every thing with an other tools). I guess you need to work with coworkers / clients and here most of them only know ESRI.

defuneste,
@defuneste@fosstodon.org avatar

@proactiveservices yup we have one I guess I am trying to do the switch from normal bike + trailer (two kids, getting old) to an electric bike with cargo in the front ... (hence the cost = electric + front a bit more complicated frame)

defuneste,
@defuneste@fosstodon.org avatar

@proactiveservices I am totally understanding the price right now (specially if you compare to a new car). I am hoping that soon we will get a good second hand market (kind of like for cars: I never owned a new car).

Exited that the mooc Reproducible Research will get a phase 2:

https://www.fun-mooc.fr/en/courses/reproducible-research-ii-practices-and-tools-for-managing-comput/

The big plus for me are:

  • provided by team of researchers and educators

  • start by understand the need/theory then build on it.

(I liked phase 1 a lot).

Had my @Cmastication moment yesterday on stage here in Brazil when I told the audience, "I grew up on a dairy farm in Indiana. My grandfather would regularly use a wrench as a hammer", when challenged that my idea to release peer-reviewed manuscript model code-bases as open-source could result in people misusing the tools we share openly and thus should refrain. You can only educate. You can't enforce. More good comes from sharing than harm, IMO.

Looking to do some data filtering in base R? Well then of course I have a post for you! Many times people in a corporate environment are strapped from installing packages or it is cumbersome to get it done, this is why I like to focus on base R solutions.

@stevensanderson One small point that I find important with the base subset() is that it also filter out NA.

Really seriously though, why is tabular data more frequently stored as comma-separated values than tab-delimited data? Either encoding scheme requires special handling of delimiter characters, but I see a lot more data values with commas in them than tabs—by some orders of magnitude!

@foolishowl @eamon in France the "social contract" was to use ; (also not the best..)

Welp I am trying hard to bring folk from my team to positconf (and ask the org to finance it).

Guess who can't go (for plenty of good reasons) and who can?

Yup all the women can't go and all men can .... Any advice ?

defuneste,
@defuneste@fosstodon.org avatar

@DataAngler to be clear I am trying to organize the "visit" to posit conf (because we have a line of credit for "going to pro conference") but then when I am asking if the women in my team want to go they simply can't.

I guess I will ask an 1:1 with my n + 2.

defuneste,
@defuneste@fosstodon.org avatar

@DataAngler no worries!

yeah I am not doubting their reasons. If we have a budget for something that only benefit the men it is still bad.

I’m trying to get my head around how application engineers think differently than data engineers. If you have thoughts, hit me up on LinkedIn:

https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jamesdlong_ideas-needed-on-data-engineering-vs-application-activity-7173635078625906689-khQE

I don’t usually “cross the streams” between Mastodon and LinkedIn, but this topic felt like LinkedIn might be a better platform to solicit a wide swath of input.

Please boost if you think your network might have thoughts!

defuneste,

@Cmastication where do you put building REST API, data governance?

apps engineer are more project oriented / data engineer tend to works more cross team / project.

It feels striking and appropriate, that my doctor makes me feel like I'm crazy and a hypochondriac for having vague symptoms making me unable to work for going on 6 weeks now, and dismissing my own evaluation of my working capacity saying I should work 20%.

Because I love being at home and not being able to make proper dinner or handle more than a 10 min walk on the property before i collapse. Sure, i can squeeze in 1.5 hours of work, and just ... Not eat or move. Sounds like a good bargain.

I am going to say it but {here} is great if you are working in a project oriented workflow (yes that is the first line of its description). If you are using it in an interactive session, calling it a bunch of time in "different places" (in code and file structure) it will not help!

Please use a project oriented workflow! It will not just help your coworkers it will also help you avoiding some mistakes.

Quick tip of the day.

When preparing a string for a query, use paste0 + collapse with single quotes inside of double quotes:

> paste0(names, collapse = "' , '")

Tada! Just add ' before and after and you have generated the string you need for your query.

defuneste,

@gaborcsardi @flaviaerius is sqlinterpolate working/implemented for every backend?
