It's strangely comforting to get a good old classic non-ending

Thanks for hosting @Taweret!

Is that supposed to be a spider he drew on the airplane

Worst spider drawing ever

It looks like an amoeba

I remember having a discussion about argument parsing in a while ago where someone recommended a small library that was kind of like argparse except that instead of returning an argparse.Namespace, it returns a fully typed object (which you define), a dataclass or something similar. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I wanted to try that library but I forgot what it is and I can't find the discussion.

Side note: I'm always confused by how most people manage to finish the movie before me every week even though I watch a version without ads and start it right on the hour

Not complaining, just confused

Later this week I'm giving a colloquium to my old grad school department (physics) about my experience getting out of and working as a software engineer. It'd be interesting to crowd-source this: grad students and other former grad students of Mastodon, what would you want to hear in this kind of a talk?

Usually the movie of the week makes a very specific promise of a monster right in the title (Godmonster, Magnetic Monster, Wasp Woman)

This week we are promised a "Shape"

hmmmm 🤔

OK seriously though, I think underneath all the perspective shifts and unexplained events and misogyny there are actually a few good plot lines in . A spy tries to sabotage a space mission, a mission goes awry and is forced to make an unexpected landing, people have to survive on another world with limited supplies, a potential couple is stuck in a confined and isolated habitat for a long time and have to confront their feelings (note: do not make the US government confront their feelings for them, that's just terrible). I'm sure all of these have been done (The Martian, Apollo 13, Passengers come to mind), but maybe not in the same movie, at least not well, and I think they could be.

Hey , for anyone still looking, YouTube has a high-quality upload of Beyond the Time Barrier in black and white: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6EdVv01Rqo

Somebody linked to this earlier in the week but I can't find the toot to thank them

So is it just a coincidence that we're watching Beyond the Time Barrier on the same day we passed a (Daylight Savings) Time barrier 🤯

Ugh, it's one of those cases when I find myself contemplating which of Amazon or Walmart is less distasteful to do business with

Or eBay, but the thing I'm looking at sells for $60 on Amazon or Walmart and the various eBay sellers offering it are charging $130 minimum for comparable quality. I mean, I'm all for supporting smaller and (hopefully) less selfish sellers, but only within reason, and paying double the price is not kind of beyond reason in this case.

I wonder what others would do?

What a classic today. I had gotten too used to extremely dumb movies so this was refreshing. Thanks as always @Taweret for hosting!

Next week should be excellent 🙂

Now that I've finished and gone back to reading "regular" books, I have a whole new appreciation for Robert Jordan's ability to create interesting characters and weave (🧐) them into a compelling story. I'll never complain about women who fold their arms under their breasts 47 times per chapter again.

...well okay I will because it's silly, but point is, the man could write, in a way that a lot of run-of-the-mill published authors cannot.

Just realized I am nearly out of butter at home, which means my traditional Christmas brownies are probably not happening... it'll be fine, just a bit of a bummer after how much I was looking forward to them.

On the other hand it's one less thing for me to do on what is already a busy day.

I started tinkering with @obsidian, and I'm definitely impressed - the experience seems smoother than any other notetaking app I've used. But I'm still debating whether it's enough better than @joplinapp (my current default) to overlook the fact that Obsidian is closed-source while Joplin is open.

It's not like I'm a die-hard open-source-only disciple, but all other things being equal-ish, I do prefer to choose open source programs, and I'm now asking myself just how far am I willing to stretch that "ish".

lololol so I think I found a "legitimate" reason to install pipx with itself

I installed pyenv and then installed pipx with one of the non-system Python versions, but then I set the local pyenv versions in a directory to exclude the one pipx was installed with, thus causing any invocation of pipx in that directory to trigger pyenv's usual warning about the command not existing in any of the enabled Python versions. Turns out pipx install pipx makes it magically work again 🎉

(this is probably where I should put a disclaimer "don't try this at home")

I think you could have guessed what happens when you leave the guy yelling "you can't do this, this is madness" as the only one in the control room where the madness can be started and stopped
