Put all my new ACDC in inner and out sleeves saving the hype stickers. Which is easier said than done.

@Whiskeyomega That’s always been true of the higher quality jackets. But with the dual-pocket VSS sleeves, I never have the LPs in them…they’re entirely separate, in their own pocket.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@Whiskeyomega I tend to leave MoV releases in their original covers (which I often regret), and fold up the AP release sleeve and put it in the jacket. (The AP stickers are kinda pointless.)

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@Whiskeyomega The problem is that some stickers just won’t come off nicely. Definitely a first world problem, though. :-)

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@Whiskeyomega Peeling off the stickers and sticking them on the outer protective sleeve is a real PITA… sometimes I wonder why I bother. :-)

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@Whiskeyomega Yah, I have a subscription to the Atlantic 75 series - I just put it in the jacket, inside the protective sleeve (I use the VSS sealed sleeves).

@hotdogsladies Yeah, it’s obviously very important to spend a lot of time socializing giant breed dogs, and he’s the mayor of the neighborhood. He wants to (cheerfully) greet everyone.

Issue 105 of "What's New in Shortcuts" has been sent: https://matthewcassinelli.com/whats-new-in-shortcuts-issue-105/

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@matthewcassinelli Any chance that Shortcuts’ iOS/iPadOS/visionOS Unzip is going to get fixed? Right now, if the ZIP has a folder in it, the action stops working after one or two unzips until you…reinstall the OS.

It’s pretty bad! (Yes, it’s reported.)

Here's the great Jeff Rosenstock covering "Not Too Soon" by Throwing Muses.

Which is my favorite song.

Milt Jackson - Jazz ‘n’ Samba

Starting this LP and asking…”what’s all this about Samba, then, Milt?” is forgivable…because all of side 1 is the “Jazz”. The “Samba” kicks in with side 2 and you can’t blame Bags for wanting to cash in a little.

The liner notes are amusing: “…spoke of (samba) as ephemeral and predicted that overproduction would run it into the ground.”

RvG definitely turned the dials up to 11 when recording this one…maybe 12.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

That full liner note graf:

“It is a curious and gratifying fact that although almost three years have elapased since Stan Getz decided to bring the jazz samba to North American audiences, the consequent commercial uproar did not turn out to be a nine-day wonder.” (Cont…)

Yes - 90125 (Atlantic 75 Series)

Yes imploded/exploded quite a few times over the years, and when it broke into XYZ/Asia and this Trevor Horn-led version, 90125 came out with a new, very 80s-commercial sound.

You've definitely heard "Owner of a Lonely Heart”, which was mostly a Horn composition for a solo album. Kind of last-minute add-on Jon Anderson gave it (and the album) a more "Yes" feel.

New Atlantic 75 version sounds great.

Khruangbin - A la Sala

Yes, yes, Khruangbin vibes, etc. Interesting interstitials that gives this an all-in-one-night throughline.

Continued groove and Malian-influenced guitar (along with many others) make this, well, what you'd expect. But also what'd you'd want.

(Still don't get why some call them psychedelic, though.)

Love the (hard to protect well) day-to-night package. Pressing pretty bit a bit noisy...

@scottearle I'm sure they've explained in an interview at some point. Sometimes people just like the sound of something… :-)

Well it's been a long long day or so. Haven't slept after camping out queuing at @waxandbeans for Record Store Day. I got all I wanted

It was really cold but at least no rain. Going to sleep like a log tonight.

While I'm talking about something other than music and stuff…let's talk external SSDs for a minute.

High speed devices demand a lot from their connection. These drives tend to come with very short cables...for a reason. The longer the cable, the higher quality it has to be (often with electronic enhancements).

Don't replace the cable with a long one “for convenience”. Use the cable that came with the drive, or invest in an expensive Apple cable...don't snag a $15 random-letter-brand one.

Finally (and I say this all the time) I don't care what you use to back up. I care that you DO IT, and do it in a way that keeps your data safe.

That means using multiple methods and destinations. Time Machine - yes, go for it. SuperDuper? Sure - or something like it—your choice, but a simple, reliable copy. A cloud backup? Yes - as a last resort restore.

Old post, but its message has been relevant since I started using computers - before (most of) you were born:

I had no idea Snack Mate (renamed “Easy Cheese” in 1984, because normal cheese is SO HARD, guys) started in 1966.

I regret that I do not have a Snack Mate Idea Book, because these ideas are killer.

You'll be sad when the apocalypse arrives and you don't have a can of needs-no-refrigeration spray cheese.

Also, gotta assume that cheese whippets are a thing.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@bynkii @roland @uliwitness @chuqvr @boris We (SuperDuper) haven't charged for updates since 2004...but, when Apple silicon came out, a native version couldn't support old licenses (because eSellerate went out of business, and their license library won't run natively).

So we gave people a choice - use Rosetta with their old license, or buy a new license for native support.

Quite a few people with 20-year-old licenses, who never paid for updates, found this unreasonable.

XTC - Go2

XTC slumped on their 2nd album. Whether because they were on the road and needed material, or because it was hard to have two Dick-tators in one band (Partridge and Andrews), it’s not clear.

This has some good songs (Moulding is learning how to write, “Are You Receiving Me?” Is great Partridge), but the two Andrews songs aren’t…and “My Weapon”, well, geez.

A shake-up was due, and happened…

This is the new remaster, including the dub Go+.

Dumptruck - for the country

Dumptruck perfected their sound and approach on this, their 3rd, and effectively last, album.

At this point the two main folks in the band - Seth Tiven and Kirk Swan - had split up, and Tiven took the reins completely. He headed to Wales and made this record. And while other releases would come 10 years later, this is peak Dumptruck. It's pretty great.

The Clash - London Calling

Is a cliché to call this one of the best albums ever made? Yes. But it's also kind of undeniable.

This is not a punk album, and the Clash wasn't really a punk band. Putting a finger on what they were is hard, because they straddled many genres, from ska to reggae to R&B to pop to straight-up rock. And it's all here.

This is my original from 1979 - the US version. It cost something like $7 because the band insisted it be cheap.

Dumptruck - Positively

Boston-based Dumptruck is a favorite, kind of obscure band that specialized in guitar-based jangle-pop. So, of course, on this 2nd album they enlisted Don Dixon to produce them.

A definitely more mainstream album than their first (“d is for dumptruck”). Lots of guitar interplay, harmony, etc.

Followed by “For the Country”, their best album, which I don't seem to have on LP. All are streaming…
