Anyone out there drive an Ioniq 5? I’m looking at it for my next car and need to gather opinions both good and bad. If you have thoughts you wanna share please let me know. Thx!

@gedeonm I'm afraid you're going to have to drop that in a nearby volcano.

While I'm talking about something other than music and stuff…let's talk external SSDs for a minute.

High speed devices demand a lot from their connection. These drives tend to come with very short cables...for a reason. The longer the cable, the higher quality it has to be (often with electronic enhancements).

Don't replace the cable with a long one “for convenience”. Use the cable that came with the drive, or invest in an expensive Apple cable...don't snag a $15 random-letter-brand one.

...and to back up the fact that I care that you do it, I've offered full backups with SuperDuper, for free, with support, for (ulp) 20 years.

Yes, to get more features and Smart Update and to help keep me in food and music it costs $28.

But to actually back up? $0. Do it. Have problems? Write to me at support - always happy to help. Mostly. ;-)

OK, back to random music posts and dog thoughts - have a good Friday.

Similarly (I really shouldn't have started down this road, but just TRY and stop me), look - I know some Macs have only a couple of ports, and so you'll be tempted to get a "hub” - once again, often a cheapo one.

But, again - high speed devices get CRANKY when used with hubs, even good ones. (TB docks are different and better.) Not only can they have speed and reliability issues, but they often need power, and when you’ve got multiple bus-powered devices attached to one port…they can fail.

This is a very important new playlist involving our most underrated guitar chord.

The mighty C/G.

App Store WTF of the Week: DealMachine for Real Estate
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/03/12/dealmachine-wtf

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@gruber OK (although I would suggest that the majority of apps on the App Store are free), but not really relevant?

My point is more that your suggestion that 3rd party app stores, authorized and effectively "policed" by Apple, are going to allow more of this kind of scam...a scam that Apple itself allowed.

I don't see why that would be. Given Apple's control over their authorization, any significant number of complaints against 3rd party stores would be hazardous to their continued survival.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@daringfireball @gruber I’m seriously confused by this take. This is happening in Apple's own app store, not in some 3rd party store. And 3rd party stores are, themselves, "managed" by Apple. Wouldn't those 3rd parties have at least the same desire to prevent abuse, if not more, since Apple can deprive them of…everything, with a click.

On top of that, do we find that this is some sort of big problem with, say, macOS or Windows apps? Even those managed by subscriptions?

Still ironing out the details, but I'm having fun adapting Black Ink (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/black-ink-crosswords/id312142427) to visionOS properly. Hope to get the app update out within the next few weeks.

@kevinteljeur @janl I would generally discourage use of SuperDuper on a NAS unless you're using an iSCSI volume. Images are just too flaky with networks (which is one reason TM fails).

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@kevinteljeur @janl I think everything has a certain amount of trouble just beacuse of the number of moving parts and points of failure that are beyond software’s direct control.

So far, "The Gentleman" is like a smart comic book, and I'm into it.

dnanian,
@dnanian@mas.to avatar

@hotdogsladies It's an exceptionally playful Peter Greenaway movie - which means it's interesting, funny, crude, cruel and misanthropic...as are all his films.

Stars a murderer's row of great actors - Richardson, Joan Plowright, Juliet Stevenson, Bernard Hill…and perhaps amusingly, Edward Tudor-Pole of Tenpole Tudor.

Plus, the numbers 1-100 in various ways, in order, in the film. And many other semiotic games…

@hotdogsladies Have you seen Drowning by Numbers…?

Beck Hansen has a sad.

XTC - English Settlement

It's possible this is the album I've listened to more than any other, as I played it incessantly back when it was released, having bought the import before the (butchered) US release came out.

Colin Moulding absolutely kills it with the two opening tracks, and his fretless work is fantastic all the way through. Partridge’s songs are mostly great, but he occasionally sabotages himself, as is his wont.

The band’s in top form: a beautiful record.

I still can't believe the Josie and the Pussycats movie flopped. Not only are Rachel Leigh Cook,Tara Reid and Rosario Dawson totally winning as the band, but they're surrounded by comedy gold and great songs.

What the heck, 2001.

I had no idea Snack Mate (renamed “Easy Cheese” in 1984, because normal cheese is SO HARD, guys) started in 1966.

I regret that I do not have a Snack Mate Idea Book, because these ideas are killer.

You'll be sad when the apocalypse arrives and you don't have a can of needs-no-refrigeration spray cheese.

Also, gotta assume that cheese whippets are a thing.
