Hey writers: what’s the best way to color text output on color-aware terminals, but not color it when output is, say, piped to another program?

I regret to inform you that local crows have learned that DoorDash delivers food. This is the second time in a week that a crow has torn a hole on the side of my delivery bag to raid its contents by the time I got to the door.

Is there anyone serious who is saying this? Or is this just another way to make the tech seem more powerful than it is?

I don't get this "we're all gonna die" thing at all.

I do get the "we are too disorganized and greedy to integrate new technology well without the economy getting screwed up and people suffering... but that's another matter..."

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@futurebird Oh and one more thing: by playing up the doomsday scenario that could supposedly be caused by his product, he’s hyping up his product as something that is so amazing that it could end humanity! It’s a kind of humblebrag!

In reality, an LLM is a (very, very good) sentence-completion engine. ChatGPT’s lasting legacy will more likely be the widespread pollution of the internet with annoying, mediocre, plausible-sounding bullshit, rather than the end of humankind.

It’s a marketing stunt.

drahardja, (edited )
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@futurebird He’s playing both sides because he profits either way. If there is regulation, then he positions himself to co-author it to constrain his competition and cement his company as a leading profit-maker in the now-constrained field. If there is no regulation and AI inevitably shits the bed, then he will claim “I told you so, it’s your fault for not regulating us.” Win-win.

If Altman really wants to save the world from the devastation of his company’s creation, he could destroy ChatGPT and never speak of it again.

But he did release it. Now he wants lawmakers to take responsibility for the shit-nuke he’s launching into the world for profit.

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@futurebird Similar take here by @pluralistic:

“These people have a reward function: “convince suckers that AI is dangerous because it is too powerful, not because it’s mostly good for spam, party tricks, and marginal improvements for a few creative processes.”

If AI is an existential threat to the human race, it is powerful and therefore valuable. The problems with a powerful AI are merely “shakedown” bugs, not showstoppers. Bosses can use AI to replace human workers, even though the AI does a much worse job — just give it a little time and those infelicities will be smoothed over by the wizards who created these incredibly dangerous and therefore powerful tools.”

You can capture your memories in 3D, but your family will remember this as the time you wore that weird mask to your daughter's birthday.

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@jamesthomson The better solution, of course is to have a T-shaped, handheld magnetic dock onto which you can mount TWO iPhones at eye distance apart that together will record a 3D video!

Anyone know what this error is? I’m trying to revive a non working Mac using configuration and keep getting this

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@mcalel Ohhhh boy. T2 Macs are a PAIN IN THE ASS to recover. Yes, you need a USB-C to USB-C cable, and a second Mac running Apple Configurator to recover it.

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@mcalel Your APFS disk is misconfigured, likely because the previous owner deleted the Data volume, not realizing that it’s paired with the System volume.

If this is an M1 Mac, follow these steps to erase the disk and start from scratch: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212030

Someone asked me how is not like in that it would make you a social pariah for wearing it. My gut reaction (having used Glass but not Vision Pro) is that using VP is like using a big screen computer or media center, while using Glass was like using an Apple Watch for notifications. VP’s UX expects you to remain more or less stationary while using it, while you’re expected to move around while wearing Glass.

IOW, I feel like Vision Pro encourages you to disengage with your social context to deeply engage with the computer’s content (like when you’re working on your laptop in a cafe), only occasionally coming back to interact with others around you; while Glass encourages you to continue to engage with your social context but continually distracts you from it.

I don’t think Vision Pro will lead to the problem, unless people start wearing it during social-interaction-heavy occasions. Now, about that guy wearing it during a kid’s birthday party…

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@aulia Yes, exactly. I think the “obscured eyes” graphic on the external display sends the same message: I’m not engaging with my surroundings right now. Please leave me alone.

It's good that they've started naming Apple releases after regions known for recreational drugs. Once they work through wine, presumably they'll either go in the Humboldt/Mendocino or Kern/Lake County direction, and then we'll have a better sense of the vibe.

It’s interesting to see how much less creepy Apple’s VR/AR solution seems compared to Meta’s last year, even when comparing similar use cases (office collaboration, video calling, etc). With Meta’s solution I felt the pervasive threat of relentless monetization at every corner. I don’t feel the same way about Apple’s approach.

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@mariani1 My worry is that as Apple starts banking on Services revenue for growth, this model will start to erode. I don’t expect it to ever get as bad as Meta’s insatiable hunger for monetization though.

12ms latency really is incredibly low. Just one and a half 120Hz frames. Less than one 60Hz frame.

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@th_in_gs Incredibly low motion lag (using an dedicated external GPU) was what made PSVR1 leaps and bounds better than even the newest Windows VR headsets. Even lower motion latency bodes well for reducing motion sickness (which I’m susceptible to)!

How’s the crowds at the Apple Park Visitor Center today? I’m thinking of grabbing a coffee there to enjoy the full experience of my first year in more than a decade of viewing from the outside. Anyone from out of town going that way today?

Thinking of bringing my Lotus Evora with the INFN8LP license plate (soon to be replaced) if y’all want to take photos with it. You know, if you want to do the tourist thing.

drahardja,

Rumors suggest that software updates will be relatively low-key this year. However, if the only changes in iOS/iPadOS 17 are updating the icons to match those on macOS, I would be satisfied.
