Google Search’s “udm=14” trick lets you kill AI search for good | Ars Technica (arstechnica.com)

Tack “&udm=14” on to the end of a normal search, and you’ll be booted into the clean 10 blue links interface. While Google might not let you set this as a default, if you have a way to automatically edit the Google search URL, you can create your own defaults.

dustyData,

DDG only uses the web indexing from bing. There’s no AI on DDG, and the search result is created by themselves, without MS tracking or fingerprinting.

dustyData, (edited )

But even activated, results don’t default to an AI chat, that’s a different beta page you have to go through intentionally. I’ve never noticed the Assist because I’m not in an English speaking region and it is not available at all for me. But the point stays, they don’t use Microsoft’s AI. They use GPT-3 and Claude.

dustyData,

Or, you know, the implied threat of use of lethal force against them, or lifetime harassment to their entire family. As it is known to happen to anyone who acts or speaks against cops.

dustyData,

That’s an hardcore but apt name for a mushroom.

Massive issues with sleep and desperate for a solution.

I’ve been struggling with sleep issues for over a decade now. My Doctor has prescribed me all sorts of medication, all of which has had many adverse side effects. What I do know that works, is Xanax. My wife was prescribed it for some stress issues and occasionally will give me one so I can finally sleep. Obviously asking my...

dustyData, (edited )

If the Xanax is helping that much, you might have to start considering that maybe your sleep issues are anxiety, or other mental health problem, related. Try to enlist the help of professionally trained psychologist. Sometimes lay therapists could help, but the pros can diagnose and team with psychiatrists to prescribe medication. However, depending on the severity of the issue, you might not even need meds. Cognitive behavioral therapy is usually extremely effective at dealing with anxiety, PTSD and related issues that can cause sleep deprivation. Mental health is complex and reaching for drugs out of desperation can go really really bad really fast, making thing worse in the long term despite a brief short term relief.

dustyData,

I know it can be frustrating and particularly hard with insurance limitations and all of those obstacles. But finding the right person can mark an extraordinary difference.

dustyData,

I’m tired of waiting for valve and soon will be getting one on the grey market.

dustyData,

The Deck is not sold in most parts of the world. This includes certain parts of Asia, Latin america, Australia, some European countries, and most of Africa. Essentially, if you’re not from the US, Canada, China or western Europe, buying a Deck directly from Valve is impossible. Import and distribution is also an impossibility. Region locking it still one of Valve’s biggest hurdles.

So, to acquire one I have to pay an overhead to a reseller willing to sell it to me, foot the import bill, the local tariff, pay the courier, and at the end of all the device will be under no guarantee, support or protection. I have to pay more for a device that Valve could decide to block, the only reason I’d still do it is because I trust they won’t. But they could if they wanted to.

A person shows up in a room full of random people. Punches one in the face and starts swinging at everyone else. People instinctively start to defend themselves and, as they are more numerous, overwhelm and badly wound the instigator. OP walks into the room, “everyone in this room is so violent, look everyone, they are so violent”. People outside the room hearing OP, “yeah, I bet anyone like them is just as violent”.

dustyData,

All religions are jokes. But this shit right here…

dustyData,

They’re competitors on form factor. Actually, the one difference you mention is precisely why I’ll probably be buying a SteamDeck instead of a Nintendo Switch. I can play Nintendo games on both after all.

dustyData, (edited )

Dude, shut up. SteamOS is Wayland. Only the Deck shell (and KDE desktop mode used to) uses X in XWayland mode. But all games run on Wayland. Without Steam massive push of Proton we wouldn’t have the booming Linux gaming scene that we have now. You fucking lot are insufferable, this is why nobody likes Wayland. It is super good, massively better than it was before. Can it be better? Yes, sure. But shut up and let people cook, would you? Recognize a good thing when it happens. Just because it isn’t perfect yet doesn’t mean it isn’t good.

EDIT: You can downvote all you want, that doesn’t change the fact that SteamOS is Wayland, it runs the Gamescope compositor. You asked to be corrected, here I’m correcting you.

dustyData,

It’s more than that, this is why such a small percent number can be so misleading. There are billions of computers active in the world, even if we limit ourselves to only desktops and laptops, nearly half a billion personal computers are made and sold each year (Lenovo alone sells over 80 million every year). Under 4% we are talking about roughly a hundred million devices running Linux desktop.

dustyData,

WSL is so garbage and an admittance from Microsoft that developers only put up with Windows due to corporate mandate. Nobody enjoys developing on Windows.

dustyData, (edited )

The Steam launcher client itself is still on X, it will run on Xwayland. What the store front Steam runs on is irrelevant though. The Steam helper will run the game on the best possible configuration for the machine, and gamescope can run proton compatibility on Wayland, as long as the game runs on a library that supports it. If the game doesn’t support a Wayland capable library, the game will be run through Xwayland. This is literally how the Steam Deck works. The Steam client not being Wayland is not on itself any limitation on the graphical quality of the games.

I disagree, he is just mad because he wants to keep all the ad money for himself and thinks YouTube is stealing his profit. This is the “ad blocking is piracy” guy afterall. There’s not a single moral shred in that video, it’s all patronizing and capitalist greed. He just wants to keep all the subscription money without having to share it with anyone.

dustyData,

Connery’s Bond was also awfully sexists and misogynistic. It’s incredibly cringe trying to watch certain scenes of that era. Some are rape fantasies through and thru.

dustyData,

Adults and even animals do this too. It’s a response to frustration. It’s what’s behind the “tear it down and rebuild it again from scratch” mindset. It stems from perfectionism and neuroticism. A good rule to teach kids is that mistakes are acceptable and nothing will ever be perfect. An existing partially good result is preferable than an inexistent perfect result. Enjoy and trust the process, ignore results for a while, learn from mistakes.

It’s also related to tolerance and flexibility. For example, some people find it intolerable to dirty up or scuff a newly bought item, let’s say a new car or new phone. Being overtly careful or even refusing to use it at all to avoid damage (how people also avoid doing things they fear they will fail at or be embarrassed). But come the first scratch, you now have to live with it. To survive the emotional response to frustration, our brain drops expectations and sometimes overcompensates exciting our aggression impulse.

This is why we recommend people certain exercises of pure exposition to frustration. Like those theater exercises that make you act ridiculous in front of the class, or thought dumping to get rid of writer’s block, or doodling to break in a new sketchbook. It’s like recalibrating emotional responses to be more flexible and tolerant of imperfections. To get comfortable with discomfort and learn to bounce back from failure.

dustyData,

It’s technically called intrusive thoughts. Kids are notoriously bad at impulse control, so this theory has credence.

dustyData,

Remember when W10 was going to be the last windows you’d ever need.

dustyData,

It looks ok. The premise is actually really bad. But I guess Michael Keaton, Jenna Ortega and of course Wynona Rider can make it work.

dustyData,

This is analog to the whole bear in a forest question and women. If it involves Reddit, it’s bears, every single time.

dustyData,

Why does the garbage stench always comes from kbin.social? Lemmy can’t get an option to ban entire instances fast enough.

In our post-AI era, is job security strictly mythical? Or How to believe in careers as a concept worth doing?

With the lastest news of AI layoffs, I’m struggling to understand how the idea of a career still holds. If careers themselves effectively become gambles like lottery tickets, how do we maintain drive and hopes in the longterm endgame of our struggles?...

dustyData, (edited )

You need people who actually know what is going on, and you need people to replace them when they get too old or senile. Because AI is being shoved everywhere, but it is basically a VC scam. Turn yourself into the solution to that one problem that AI can’t solve.
