The fact that business owners fought to keep remote work from being more widely adopted is a fucking tragedy. Remote work solved so many problems i.e. less greenhouse gases, less traffic (which means less strain on infrastructure), more money circulating in smaller towns, less wasted time commuting for employees (which also means less money being wasted on gas) etc. But nope, we gotta justify these buildings somehow.

dzamir,
@dzamir@mastodon.uno avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi the real problem is that the governments did not care at all.

Just imagine a system that gives a tax benefit for every employee on full remote and more taxes for every kind of employee working from office for a job that can be done from home

Can someone at Google please disable the fucking automatic translations for the developer pages?

My Italian colleagues and I always have to manually disable the translation every time we open an Android developer page; I'm sure there will be a KPI showing higher engagement, and the PM of this change will be super-happy instead of worried about ruining the product.

AI is the new blockchain. The difference this time is that more people and companies jumped on the hype and bought the story, but we’ll regret it years from now.

@pedro @baldur I’m also super critical of all the AI hype, but at least there's a minimal value in all those AI applications that I never saw on the blockchain (a write-only, super slow, distributed database? wtf).
The problem is that they are literally burning the environment just to find some value that will surely exist, but in my opinion, it will be a lot smaller than what those big companies imagine.

In the previous months, my team worked hard to reduce compilation times of our KMM project by removing a lot of unused code and optimizing Gradle scripts: the result was a reduction in compile time by ~10 seconds.

Now, our organisation mandated the installation of Sophos Antivirus Endpoint for all employees, and the build times DOUBLED.

I'm still the only one without the antivirus installed, and we all have the same configuration (M1 Pro 10 cores, 32GB Ram)

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.

I’m old and I miss the “world wide web” in which you receive a link from someone and the page shows exactly what you were linked.

For example, this is what happens when someone sends me a link to Facebook (I don’t have the Facebook app or a Facebook account).

This aggressive behaviour is basically the same for all major social platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, etc)

Facebook webpage trying twice to open the Facebook app that it’s not installed, and safari showing me an error that it can’t open the invalid address. Then, cookie selection, Facebook that wants me to login every time I scroll and showing me random stuff

This is the most USA's thing ever:

  • Someone steals something not important and runs away
  • It is televised
  • A helicopter follows him
  • He escapes from cops more than once
  • At the end he's captured, but he's surrounded by 25 cops

I'm desperately in search of an old story on the web, but Google search is cursed and I can't find anymore:

In the late ‘90s, a group of hackers built and distributed custom hardware to decode and illegally watch satellite TV. Every time the company changed the encoding mechanism, they had to release a software update.

It's the time of year when new super-fast iPads are released, but they are held back by the current iPadOS version, which will surely be fixed with the changes that will be announced on WWCD. Then September will come, and everyone will realise the iPad is the same mess as always.

Thought I’d share my most recent espresso gadget purchases.

  1. The Eureka Mignon dosing funnel greatly reduces mess when grinding into the portafilter.

  2. The Normcore Spring Loaded tamper has made tamping properly much easier because it rests on the basket, ensuring a level tamp. I can’t believe not all tampers do this these days.

  3. The E&B Lab puck screen is my most recent addition. I’ve found that using it results in a much cleaner group head and a firmer puck that’s easier to knock out.

@maxrudberg Gentler Streaks.
Maybe it's more UX than UI, but the app is well done and personalised to the user's needs.

I am not sure why Lagrange (Gemini Browser) isn’t in the AppStore yet. I use the beta daily and I am sure most people wouldn’t notice the few remaining issues.

Especially since there isn’t any other good Gemini client for iOS at the moment (that I know of). Elaho was removed.

It’s 2024. Swift Package Manager was introduced in 2015, and still, I have to quit and reopen Xcode when I switch Git branches, or the build will fail because there are “no dependencies" in the project.

Fortunately, I only moved away from CocoaPods one year ago and not sooner; I can't imagine how many disasters or wasted man-hours I’ve avoided in all the projects and teams I worked with in the past.

Needed to turn off Screen Time temporarily. Apple: “bollocks to you, then”. Infers the set-up is wiped and has me start from scratch. I go through the set-up, and it merges the new one with what was already there. But the block set-ups have been randomly wiped.

Stellar UX, there, Apple. Parents rejoicing. Etc.

Often with the phase "work smart not hard", the presumption is that one should work less, but working smart doesn't mean working less amount overall, but the same amount and trying to achieve even more.

dzamir, (edited )
@dzamir@mastodon.uno avatar

@djlink what happens in "smart" teams is that by working smart you deliver the same amount of features but with more quality (you have more time for test and quality control)
