Microsoft is backtracking on Recall, making it opt-in and improving security. While that's good news, taking a "whatever we can get away with” approach to security and privacy is not a great way to build or maintain trust with people. This will end up being a big hit for MS to take for a feature that no one is asking for.

Let's hope that Apple doesn't announce any similar nonsense at WWDC next week!

i have fallen in love with the mail order/ziplock bag era of software publishing. this piece is 42 years old, and came from a TRS-80 owner that I inherited it (and dozens of other software/hardware from) fifteen years ago

the original owner of Dunkey Munkey for the Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer ordered it from a home business called Intellitronics, based out of Smithtown, NY, USA.

play as luigi 😎

what stands out to me is the cover art. this would have been created using a font stencil and paper cut-outs, hand-placed and then duplicated with a four-colour printing press process. i'd love to know if anyone into printing recognizes the technique/machinery that might have been used to duplicate it.

@vga256 played a LOT of Dunkey Monkey back in the day! Probably the main reason our joysticks started to malfunction (they were not very robust)

someone local to me is selling a Thayer's Quest arcade cab

i grew up playing a lot of Dragon's Lair as a kid (for a loonie a pop!!) at the local arcade

but i had no idea there were third party developers who made conversion kits for DL cabs. the control panel for this thing is insane 😆

imagine playing a CYOA game on laserdisc.

A player taps a membrane keyboard interface to select multiple choice options for an animated laserdisc game. The game pauses every few seconds to allow the player to make a new choice, which plays a different animation.

@vga256 you were far richer than I was! I could never justify dropping a dollar on one game. That’s a lot of empties to cash in for very little game time.

edbilodeau,

@vga256 my go tos were, in order, Space Duel, Time Pilot, Xevious, and if I was feeling lucky, Sinistar. But I rarely had more than a dollar at a time.

I remember seeing an ad for Radius’ portrait display in the early 90s and thought it was amazing. Unattainable (I was firmly in the Windows/DOS camp at that time, and couldn’t afford a Mac much less a high end display), but amazing.

Microsoft reveals subscription pricing for using Windows 10 beyond 2025, and it's not cheap. Customers will need to pay $61 per device, which will double every year for three years, to remain secure on Windows 10. If you just do shopping or social media you can use alternative os like Ubuntu, Mint, or pop os for your older computer instead of jumping to windows 11. Also regardless of windows 10 or 11 prices you will still get Ads in Windows 😂 Choose wisely

edbilodeau,
@edbilodeau@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft I suspect that many orgs will be comparing this cost against the cost of buying new hardware, especially if the portion of their fleet that cannot run Win11 is not small.

“Gen Xers […] are struggling to get jobs. First, the leadership roles they would normally ascend to aren't open, as many Boomers are delaying retirement and clinging to their jobs. But when roles have opened, ageism is a key factor: the accelerated pace of technological advancements has led managers to prioritise digital natives for open roles, believing they are more adaptable than Gen Xers – even though experts say these judgments are unfounded, if not entirely false.”
