I just picked up the salt shaker and tried to drink out of it. Guys, I have a Ph.D.

my favorite part of using @matrix is being gaslit by the main messenger I'm using to communicate with those I care about

love to see a series of messages described as "delivered" and "seen", then compare screenshots and find out that many of them just never were

elb,

@whitequark @matrix I have also seen this recently even among my own devices. Like one device will have messages delivered and seen, and on another device I simply don't see those messages at all, and yet the client appears to be happy and say things are up to date. I'll even see typing notifications from someone in the same room that has missing messages. Then at some point an update will barf into the room with the missing messages. It's very frustrating and trust-violating.

@whitequark @matrix (NB before anyone corrects me, I realize that it's stated and intentional design that one client and another client even from the same user may be in different states, the frustrating thing here is that it seems intuitively like the client that is behind should know that (e.g., because it is getting current typing notifications that postdate the missing information), and it gives no indication that it does or does not know.)

Daughter (11): when did North and South Korea separate?
Me: the 1950s
Daughter: you weren't born yet, were you?
Me: ... ... ... ... ... ...

A very close friend of mine is battling and , and needs help. I've known Larry for about 15 years, and in that time he has given to me his time, energy, stuff, and his support on many occasions. Above all, he's taught me things. Now he needs help, and if you have a little to give, please consider supporting:

I love the that goes on on the , but I've never asked for aid for myself or a friend before. Now is the time, for me.

Me: When we get home, don't immediately start bickering with your sister. You two have bickered immediately every day this week.
7yo: OK, not before Tae Kwon-Do. After, I don't know.
Me: ... how about you just don't?
7yo: Dad, sometimes things just don't turn out like I expect.

My health insurance company is marketing diabetes management at me hard. I feel like they should know I'm not diabetic.

As someone who really dislikes the mega-containerization approach and has been unhappy about it since Docker came in with a splash about a decade ago, I'm happy to see a pretty well written criticism of the idea that conatiner systems like Flatpak, Docker, etc are doing a good job of making things easier or more secure for users or devs. They aren't. https://blog.brixit.nl/developers-are-lazy-thus-flatpak/

So here's me speaking favorably about Debian, Arch, Guix, Nix, etc. And all of those can use Guix or Nix as a userspace package manager.

But lord have mercy. Don't use these mega black box systems. You're just accruing a gigabyte sized ball of technical debt for every component in your operating system if you use those.

@cwebber (I know you already know this, but as part of the larger discussion) Debian + guix using guix shell -C -F and some careful binds into the container (or just running it from a careful location) has "containerized" a LOT of things very successfully, for me. I've built a few manifests for particular purposes, and use them very happily.

I would like something a bit lower friction for "always run this app in a container, with these auto-binds" like Flatpak does, but without the flatpak.

We spent the weekend in the Adirondacks, doing some hiking and enjoying being away from it all. Finding a place where you cannot hear cars or the sounds of mechanized life is precious.

I missed the outage (although its reliability has been steadily worse in my use case for a couple of years now), but I did get to experience this CSS joy.

Suppose that one has a problem with acquiring large and heavy items out in a field and needing to haul them out. (Items like boat anchor radios, old computers, and Teletypes, just for example.)

Any recommendations on a folding or otherwise highly portable hand truck that might help out in a scenario like that?

I mean

elb,
@elb@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@penguin42 I've considered furniture or equipment dollies, but they won't deal well with fields and unimproved ground. In my particular use case, I have to be able to pack this thing in and out on my person, and once it's loaded up I need to be able to pull it for hours over chip-and-dust drives and unimproved earth.

Thanks for the input!

elb,
@elb@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@penguin42 Maybe -- some people use children's wagons, even!

I think I'm prepared to use a two-wheeled hand truck with suboptimal tires, and there are a few of those available that will fit in a backpack, but they're mostly imports of questionable quality so I have some trepidation.
