The Complicated Ethics of #RareBook#Collecting: Literary treasures are too often hidden away from the public—but the world of private collecting isn’t all bad. - The Atlantic
Not sure it's as complicated as all that 😀 (especially compared with other fields), the more so as it's from a collector and in effect answers its own question (attached). But good to put the issues out there. Also nice that features local collector Lisa Baskin
I know I'm not the only person to choose this. I've also debated, & asked daughter opinion. I have no overall favourite but this one, & why.
It was early on in my 2021 BTS watching. I now realise 2019 - 21 is less time to 21 - now, making it quite recent when I actually watched and went: Horses? What is going on? What is all this?
Then went & learnt about the God Dionysus. I've learnt so much from BTS.
Now remembering when the school banned beyblades and tamagotchi and the day I had to look after daughters tamagotchi for her, and all the other things you just had to buy and collect...
Artist Dani Gal has a collection of 700 spoken-word vinyl records that tell a partial history of the 20th century, from Gandhi and Goebbels to Golda Meir and Gamal Nasser. Ahead of a new exhibition at Vancouver's Polygon Gallery, he spoke to Montecristo's Peter Watts about what he's learned from these records, and the stories that aren't told.
A 1-cent postage stamp from 1868 is going up for auction in June, and could fetch up to $5 million. It's one of only two known to exist (the other is owned by the New York Public Library) and features an image of Benjamin Franklin. Its "Z-grill" mark is what makes it particularly covetable for collectors. Smithsonian Magazine explains what that means.
We are looking to fund + acquire a full run of COCA Times, a magazine for US coinop collectors, for ongoing preservation and research.
Can you please consider contributing to our goal? https://ko-fi.com/detchibe/goal?g=42
A case of hockey cards found in a basement in Regina, Saskatchewan, could fetch more than CAD $1 million at auction. The case holds 16 unopened boxes of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee (OPC) cards, with 48 packs of 10 cards per box — 7,860 in total. Based on statistical probability, there will be around 20 pristine rookie cards of Canadian legend Wayne Gretzky inside. Here's more from CTV.
The first episode of my podcast dropped check it out. I'm attaching the Spotify link, but its on Amazon and Google and eventually Apple once I jump through all the hoops.
Would love to interview creators in the horror/anime/gaming/cosplay/comic field
I still have a laser disc player & Star Wars on LD; Han shot first. I use a 12 yr old phone for a music player/streamer. I don't collect old tech, but I appreciate not dumping it for the latest thing.
Here's one for retro-tech aficionados. The used book/mag biz is a sort of time machine. Stop in to browse eons past & imagine future possibilities!

Thinking about the difference between #memorabilia and #antiques. At the moment, rare items of 1980s popular culture are catching wild prices from nostalgic 50-y-os. I got $40 for a pewter miniature the other day. But 50 years from now, I don't really see anyone caring that much about an unopened 1979 Han Solo action figure. While exclusive 18th century furniture just keeps getting more expensive.

Got lucky and managed to order a used copy of Defender of the Crown from that limited official release by Cinemaware Retro via AtariAge a few years ago. It's basically the Atari ST version with an orchestral soundtrack. #atari#atarijaguar#collecting#gaming#retrogaming
