sideSister's debut album "Nothing" is out now on vinyl, CD, and digital download. https://sidesister.bandcamp.com/album/nothing

The album's first radio single is "Lovelock", and that also has a video, which you can watch at this link: https://bandcamp.com/VideoEmbed?track=3595615183&bgcol=ffffff&linkcol=0687f5

Fast forward to the end of the twenty-first century. Sea levels have risen appreciably, and in New Zealand the South Dunedin suburbs are now tidal mudflats. But along the way legends have been made within the boundaries of the former Borough of St Kilda. https://sidesister.bandcamp.com/track/legends-of-st-kilda

Playlists, playlists, playlists. Tracks from our debut album (https://sidesister.bandcamp.com/album/nothing) are being added to more Spotify playlists. Mixed feelings about that.

The album, and tracks from it, are also being included in a number of music blogs. We'll post links when they're published. I'm hoping blog and playlist authors will be puzzled and curious if they get hits from Mastodon.

JBK / JBK & history lesson 1 / ???

There have been four core writing cycles, each of which containing some number of originals as well as remixes and / or community reimaginings of those songs.

Fidelity
Blood and Blackouts
Voidtouched
Salvation

There have also been two minor writing cycles that were not metal focused that were a bit more weird in nature.

Hopes and Dreams
Deathphoria

In this thread I’ll talk about each of the cycles and the motivations for them.

Action stations at the sideSister album creation weekend.

elsemusic,
@elsemusic@musician.social avatar

Following up on the writing weekend, I've edited the audio demos of the nine new songs, and created a structured online work area to make the next steps as straightforward as possible. I've transferred the lyrics and chords to spreadsheets ordered by bar number, which will exactly reference the DAW location.

Some songs will need further tweaking, but we have several we can immediately begin recording. Today I should be able to frame up the first of these songs.

Progress!

    @flockofnazguls @baymud I also had major audio and MIDI issues due to a cheap three metre USB extension cable. Nothing of importance was plugged into the powered bus on the end of the cable, but it affected everything else connected to the Mac Mini. Replacing that extension cable with one of the right quality resolved all my issues.

    Lil tip for every musician with a home studio, or anyone who has some large headphones. Grab one of these self adhesive kitchen roll holders, put it under your desk, bam, you can fit about 3 pairs of headphones and some leads on them, and they are cheap as hell.

    Also if you're on a budget and the price of synth stands makes you wince but you need more desk space, buy a cheap wooden shoe rack, ones you can put together yourself are even better and usually cheaper and you can angle the wood then!

    @limneticvillains Great ideas! I picked up these cheap plastic brackets at the local hardware store which are also useful. I think the packet had four brackets for NZD8.00.

    Really hate tech sometimes. Was listening to a tune I've been working on for the past couple of weeks yesterday & suddenly the speakers cut out. After doing a number tests rearranging cables I've determined that outputs 1 & 2 on the Apogee Symphony are no longer functional. Have to take it in now for a warranty repair, which is likely to take weeks. Really frustrated, & thinking that after all the issues I've had the past year I've chosen the wrong hobby.

    @muz4now @GuitarSith I'm often faced with self-inflicted problems. I was uninstalling our Faderport 16 a fortnight ago and noticed that our Integra 7 was powered via an earth-lifter adaptor.

    "Why would that be there?" I grumbled as I removed it. Two days later I recorded some piano (88 key -> MIDI -> Integra 7).

    "Where's that hum coming from?" I complained. "That wasn't there a week ago!"

    Eventually the pieces of the mental jigsaw clicked.

    Here is a musical #ThrowbackThursday

    I found this track among dozens of tracks I made from the early 90s. It doesn't have a name so I can't find the DAW work file easily. This was digitized off a four-track. I used hardware synths but I don't recall which ones. (Is there a way to find out the synth model from sysex dump?)

    The question is should I try to recover these lost tracks I made and clean up and record them digitally and release them?

    @flockofnazguls @ordosmarkzero That's a key point.

    Meta and Alphabet constantly parrot the inability of smaller platforms to provide the level of moderation required to provide a safe online environment, while patently failing to provide any safety or objectivity on their own platforms.

    The reality is that fraud, misinformation and spam are most profitable when they target large monopolistic platforms. Targeting twenty platforms instead of two or three? Twenty times as much work.

    elsemusic,
    @elsemusic@musician.social avatar

    @big_louse @flockofnazguls @ordosmarkzero ... to the point that you'd have to know nothing about the platform to sign on in the hope of scamming other users.

    If you were only bringing one synth keyboard with you on stage to perform, what would you bring up there? I’m asking because I have a vision of me, my guitar, and a stage synth I could stand near and use on and off. It would have to also carry some nice analog piano sounds at times. Not sure if it’s possible to do unless it’s a midi controller with laptop. But it’d be so cool if it was a standalone analog unit. The simplicity appeals. :blobcatcoffee: #GearSquad

    elsemusic,
    @elsemusic@musician.social avatar

    @ambergrey There are suitable performance models from all major manufacturers, designed to cover pretty much all the bases you need for live work. You'll need to decide how much weighting you need on the keyboard, and whether you can get by with fewer than 88 keys, but there are plenty of options.

    @mxtthxw Collins' participation in early Genesis albums from the seventies was retrospectively injected into history books and album covers in a joint project between the CIA and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The same joint project put mocked-up photographs of a young Phil into a London production of Oliver! and had him playing drums on various seventies side projects.

    Well, I’m now beyond frustrated with Apple. Was working with Apple Loops in Logic this morning, went to use the search feature, picked a filter and now all the loops are totally gone. I reindexed them, nothing; reinstalled & reindexed them, nothing. Deleted the preference file, rebooted, nothing. Lost all my settings when I deleted the preferences too. So looking like I need to delete anything Logic related for preferences & logs the reinstall Logic. 🤬

    @GuitarSith @ambergrey I had a similarly idiosyncratic issue yesterday in Reaper.

    I have a utility mastering project for demos and work in progress; it has some standard plugins, and I can drag a mix into it to quickly deliver a rough output to share and review. Yesterday it started replaying any track I tried mastering as if it was being run through a saturator and pitch shifter.

    I couldn't fix it. I had to re-create the project by replicating the structure and plugins from the original.
