(I just sent this to the White House.)

Mr. President,

I heard a speech by you at a dinner last night about the War in Gaza where you insisted that "it's not genocide."

Let me first point out that if you have to say that about anything, it's probably really bad. You don't have to say that about a baseball game or a Christmas parade.

evan, (edited )
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

But I also note that you are not a scholar of genocide. 800 of them signed a letter saying that there is a plausible chance we are seeing genocide in Gaza.

https://twailr.com/public-statement-scholars-warn-of-potential-genocide-in-gaza/

The International Court of Justice also said the war is a plausible genocide. And of course the International Criminal Court has brought indictments against the prime minister of Israel and the defense minister for crimes against humanity.

These are serious people and experts in their fields. Can you really say you're 100% sure that it's not a genocide? On what grounds?

And if it is, what have you done to America, its reputation, and its soul, by supporting the perpetrators of the genocide with money, weapons, and diplomatic cover?

Your nickname is now Genocide Joe. Aren't you ashamed of that? Even if you think it's untrue, knowing that millions of people associate you with the greatest crime imaginable.

Do you want future generations to remember you, to remember our country, for enabling and collaborating in genocide?

Mr. President, you're gambling with our collective legacy, and the fact that you're so certain of yourself gives me and other Americans pause. We think you don't see what we see; or maybe you see it and you don't care.

I voted for a man who would care.

But also, these shorts and shirt were C$21. That’s the price of a meal. So why not go for it?

Time to embrace the sun!

Trump soft-floated the idea of a third term during the NRA convention this weekend. While the rest of the world watches the leader of the GOP navigate four different criminal trials, he’s busy planting the seeds of autocracy to his adoring base.

And we’re busy organizing to stop him. If you can, please support all we’re doing to win in November and end Trump’s political career forever: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/stop-trump-again?refcode=mastodon20240520directpost&source=mastodon

@indivisibleteam isn't he talking about the 2021-2025 term? That he believes he won the 2020 election, so the current term is technically his?

@evan My apologies, in that you meant that for a specific crowd, of which I'm not a member. Didn't mean to horn in or take credit for somebody else's things. Just appreciated your thought, as a reflection of a global set of values that I'd like to think I do play a small part. You write well! Hardly think I've ever said this without irony but literally: Thanks for sharing it.

evan,

@chicating I'm not sure what you're talking about. Maybe a reply that you later deleted...? Anyway, no hard feelings and thank you for the kind words.

@chicating thank you for deleting something you didn't feel good about after! That's such a positive part of building our community.

I don't like that the Biden White House always treats human rights issues in the Gaza War as just too redonkulous for words. It's insulting to everyone's intelligence and inconsistent with other formal and informal statements. "There are problems with the way the Gaza War is being handled but they don't rise to the level of war crime" is a clearer and more honest position statement.

"International law should apply equally for all people and for all countries."

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@energisch_ so, having a "yes, but..." or "no, but..." option isn't enough to deal with these complexities?

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

I posted this after listening to the Ezra Klein Show episode about Israel, Palestine, and the UN last week: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/17/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-asli-bali.html

One thing it covered that I found very interesting is that the guest, Professor Aslı Ü. Bâli, pointed out that the current world order optimizes for peace over security.

The UN's structure gives nuclear powers the chance to veto any international process in the security council, rather than having them veto it with bombs on the battlefield.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

I realize that the veto is part of the legal structure, and thus part of the law, so technically vetoing stuff is still within the law. But in other ways we let powerful countries get their way -- say, by ignoring decisions of the ICJ or ICC -- in order to prevent all-out war.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

I don't see a good alternative to this system right now, so I'm somewhat agree. It would be good if more of the world powers that can ignore the UN took it seriously anyway, and set a good example for the rest of the world.

@IcooIey fair enough! I've read about them but never eaten them. I guess the ripe fruit are not poisonous. I've read a couple of accounts that they used to be a summer fruit beloved by children. Anyway, glad you're staying safe!
