I'm continually amazed by the community, but admittedly having trouble processing a certain mistrust for right now in light of recent layoffs and comments from 's CEO about replacing people with AI. I'm legit angry about the harm done to Fedora and the world by some clearly out of touch suits and grieved by the human cost of those decisions on people who most certainly did not deserve it.

@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@vwbusguy agreed. I'm almost a little astonished it took IBM so long to screw it up, but there's little surprise about the trajectory they're on. They never learn.

It's my belief that if an electronic device needs replacing within four years—for any reason—it was defective from the beginning.

@RL_Dane GSM incl. GPRS is still supported by all mobile networks I know. Your carrier may choose to block your access, but there is no technical reason for it.

Many remote IoT connections like vending machines, some public transport displays, and gazillions of remote sensing equipment still use GPRS as it's perfectly fine for the use case of sending a few bytes of data to home base.
@sotolf @twizzay @benjaminhollon

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane same here, but that doesn't include 2G. Otherwise your vending machines never get refilled. 😄

I was actually surprised at the amount of 3G still running in Ireland. I've not seen any in continental (western) Europe in years. But then it is still a good technology in rural areas as cell sizes can be huge.
@sotolf @twizzay @benjaminhollon

@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane yeah. OTOH you had CDPD way before we implemented GPRS starting in 1999. I worked in system verification at that time, and we were really envious. 😄

Read this and weep if you're tasked with protecting windows systems:

https://www.fo-sec.com/articles/compromising-mdatp-endpoint

It's 2023 and yet password hashes can be trivially dumped from memory and decoded since they use known-broken algorithms. And information exfiltration can defeat so-called endpoint protection by being fast enough. What?!

Running any kind of business-critical process on windows systems is nothing but gross negligence. If you have a ransomware attack you're the problem, not the victim.

    This is some pure gold. They went from #AWS Serverless to a simple container deployment and saved a ton of money and the "they" is #Amazon!

    Every paragraph is zing after zing here - an Amazon engineer advises not using "serverless" in production!

    @vwbusguy amazingly enough, cloud gets expensive once you actually use it.

    It's cool for flexibility and scaling, but private metal is always going to be cheaper above 30% or so of actual usage.

    I’m seeing WAY too many self-described “the AI guy/gal - follow me to how to leverage AI yada yada” then you look at their LinkedIn and it’s “self employed director of marketing” with a BA in Art History. Learn AI from data scientists and programmers who actually built it.

    Don’t let the AI grifters get you or your family. Educate yourself.

    About a month and a half as an intern junior dev. It's been a rollercoaster so far. One day every problem is solved and everything works, the next day the tiniest stuff is seemly broken and there's no way to fix it. In other words, one day I think I can make it, the other day I blame myself for even thinking about trying to make a living of something I'm utterly inept for. Programmers are supposed to be problem solvers, but what if the problem is the programmer, like, myself? XD

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @array great progress, keep chipping away at it!

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @array it is progress because you're learning to solve problems. That's what your job will be.

    Feeling you're part of the problem leads to self-criticism which leads to self-improvement and thus learning. You'll never get better if you don't doubt yourself and actually work hard on becoming better.

    Somebody once said "it's not a bad day if I've learned something" and I think that's a great way of looking at lifelong learning.

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane @array exactly. Also there's a difference between self-doubt and self destruction. The former can be healthy; keep away from the latter.

    @ParadeGrotesque the more of these things happen the more I like the idea of running a private instance. Which I'd be happy to turn into a community instance except nobody I physically know is in the fediverse.

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @penguin42 yes, but those you can defederate.

    Also just like spammers don't usually run their own mail servers I doubt they'll go to the extent of running their own fedi instances. Others may do it as a service, which means they'll end up on a public blacklist and be wholesale deferated in an instant.
    @ParadeGrotesque

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @penguin42 agreed. And I think the fediverse needs to develop some protocols to deal with nefarious people. So far we're like the early Internet - friendly people working together and following netiquette. This is already changing.

    I think we're in need of controlling bad actor instances, and also controlling data access better. The possibility to harvest data without even so much as a registerer user account will not be long for this world.
