Ok guys...

  1. I'm back $HOME, so @charadon can stop giving me the hairy eyeball ;)

  2. Yep, the Valley of Hinnom is unseasonably frosty right about now, @fedops ;)

    I'm wondering if it's about time for this clean-shaven to switch to . 🤔

    It seems X11 is really coming to a crossroads and turning into maintenance-mode software.
    At this point, it runs fine even on my 12th-Gen intel machine, but if I ever get newer hardware (not anytime soon, obvs.), I might need to make the switch. :/

    It’s fascinating how some people effectively want to boil the internet back down to the AOL walled garden model where the entire internet exists within Facebook

    fedops,

    @jerry it's as if people cannot differentiate between protocols and platforms. 🤕

    I have some bad news everyone: the fediverse isn’t working out. Guess we should pack it up and move back to Facebook.

    @reiver I disagree. There are free compilers, interpreters, and even IDEs available for every language. There are billions of pages of free documentation, plus web trainings and YouTube videos.

    Back in the day you had to buy everything you needed except for the "free" included Basic interpreter which severely limited your choice. Even a lowly C64 was a good chunk of money whereas today a cheap Raspberry Pi will do nicely.

    The problem is that nobody wants to program anymore.

    fedops,

    @opendna yes. Why not? Maybe help them install it and then go for it.

    No it's not satire. Have you tried hiring young people recently?

    @peturdainn not saying that doesn't happen. But why did you buy the computer? Was it to learn or to game? I think nobody buys their first computer to game anymore (other than hardcore gamers, and then it's usually not their first one), they get a top-spec phone, tablet, or a console.

    This old ruler is interesting; It is a 'Chesterman 891' folding ruler - they seem to be common; but everyone has advertising engraved on the back; this one has an advert for 'Roberts & Johansen' of Buenos Aires - I have no idea how he got that! I can't find much info about Roberts [&Y] Johansen; I'd love to know when they were at that address to be able to date it.
    (Oddly I found a Spanish advert for one of these rulers with a Manchester manufacturer on the back - but not the other way!)

    @penguin42 interesting. Why wouldn't not be ok for commercial use?

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @penguin42 interesting. These folding types are standard over here, usually in 2m lengths, and craftsmen use them all the time. Tape rulers are really only used by people requiring lengths over >2m all the time.

    I'm continually amazed by the community, but admittedly having trouble processing a certain mistrust for right now in light of recent layoffs and comments from 's CEO about replacing people with AI. I'm legit angry about the harm done to Fedora and the world by some clearly out of touch suits and grieved by the human cost of those decisions on people who most certainly did not deserve it.

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @vwbusguy agreed. I'm almost a little astonished it took IBM so long to screw it up, but there's little surprise about the trajectory they're on. They never learn.

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane GSM incl. GPRS is still supported by all mobile networks I know. Your carrier may choose to block your access, but there is no technical reason for it.

    Many remote IoT connections like vending machines, some public transport displays, and gazillions of remote sensing equipment still use GPRS as it's perfectly fine for the use case of sending a few bytes of data to home base.
    @sotolf @twizzay @benjaminhollon

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane same here, but that doesn't include 2G. Otherwise your vending machines never get refilled. 😄

    I was actually surprised at the amount of 3G still running in Ireland. I've not seen any in continental (western) Europe in years. But then it is still a good technology in rural areas as cell sizes can be huge.
    @sotolf @twizzay @benjaminhollon

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane yeah. OTOH you had CDPD way before we implemented GPRS starting in 1999. I worked in system verification at that time, and we were really envious. 😄
    @sotolf @twizzay @benjaminhollon

    fedops,
    @fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane interesting.

    I mean they have a point with 3G. Both spectrum use as well as energy requirements are really bad by today's standards. So getting rid of it makes sense. 2G is another matter, but as you say you never had much of it.

    Read this and weep if you're tasked with protecting windows systems:

    https://www.fo-sec.com/articles/compromising-mdatp-endpoint

    It's 2023 and yet password hashes can be trivially dumped from memory and decoded since they use known-broken algorithms. And information exfiltration can defeat so-called endpoint protection by being fast enough. What?!

    Running any kind of business-critical process on windows systems is nothing but gross negligence. If you have a ransomware attack you're the problem, not the victim.

    @vwbusguy amazingly enough, cloud gets expensive once you actually use it.

    It's cool for flexibility and scaling, but private metal is always going to be cheaper above 30% or so of actual usage.
