„Okay, Sie leben also in Wilder Ehe, ja?“ 😐️

What is the Fediverse/Mastodon alterntive to Tweeps? I liked that word as a way to address the crowd and explicitly ask for feedback/opinions. I could think of Mastodonians (but that does not include other Fedi platforms) or Fedinauts (which might sound a bit arcane). Anything that has gained some traction?

/via @jk

New Datasette plugin: datasette-homepage-table, which lets you configure Datasette to serve a specific table as the homepage of the instance (rather than a list of databases) https://github.com/datasette/datasette-homepage-table

@simon Only slightly related question, if I may: Is there a communication channel where one can ask questions about datasette? Like an online forum, a chat, or something? I’d really like to play more with datasette, but there are a few things I cannot wrap my head around. I couldn’t find anything on the website, but maybe I’m missing something?

I love the academic perception of time. We dont have enough time to spend a month writing tests and docs to make a project maintainable, but its no problem to throw 5 years of labor into the trash when someone leaves the lab and nobody understands what they did

felwert,
@felwert@mstdn.social avatar

@jonny @moritz_negwer At our institute, we have one project (you might call it a “lab”) that has a remarkable discipline in how they manage their collaboration practices. They are hard-core humanists (reading texts, then writing texts), and they use a digital collaboration platform in the most analogue way: Every time someone checks in a new version of a document, they basically upload a new file, but with a rigid file naming scheme containing a version number, initials of the editor, and date.

felwert,
@felwert@mstdn.social avatar

@jonny @moritz_negwer Still, it works for them, and it is strictly enforced. And every bit of information is somewhere in their collaboration platform, with a very comprehensive ordering scheme. I don’t agree with everything they do, but this is a remarkable example that it is in fact possible to maintain this kind of information infrastructure. And their publication output is stunning, even more so when measured against other humanities projects.

The project is coming to an end, we are currently busy preparing the last batch of objects for publication. To give you a better sense of what we did in the project and what it looks like traveling to a small museum in to digitize a collection of ~1500 Buddhist sculptures, we made a short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvElg7B7kYQ Happy watching and please share if you like it!

@KlausBulle @ddbkultur @museum @lysander07 Spannender Ansatz und gute Reflexion: “A significant challenge we are encountering is the extraction of accurate descriptions for some artworks, particularly figure studies. The OpenAI API […] often categorizes these images as nudity or sexual activity due to its content sensitivity guidelines. This situation illustrates a critical drawback of relying on commercial AI solutions, which may not always align with the nuanced needs of cultural heritage.”

Trying to set up on to help my father with a computer issue. A few years back, an account in the instant messenger client was enough, because it used a quite clever mechanism to set up a connection. What’s the best way today? GNOME now supports RDP natively, but by default it seems to only support link local connections, not over internet? Do I really need TeamViewer for this?

I have an honest question about publishing, especially (but not exclusively) in non-STEM fields: The general narrative is that academics do all the work, and publishers just add their logo and take a huge fee, so we're better off doing it ourselves. But there's one thing publishers actually do, which is . (Okay, not they, but their contractor in India.) Universities/libraries might offer an OJS instance, but no typesetting service. How do you solve this?

Weird how being nonunionized faculty gives you no power to bargain over how much "overhead" and fake tuition the university charges per grad student. Almost seems like an effective way of pitting PIs against grad workers: to the PI you're extremely expensive, but the grad worker receives almost none of that.

The amount of ppl saying this is the natural "reality" rather than a byproduct of a disempowered faculty is making my eyes roll into the back of my skull

felwert,
@felwert@mstdn.social avatar

@jonny Interesting! What's the institutional context here? Where are the numbers from? In comparison: The German Research Foundation grants 22% overhead on the overall project costs, of which salaries usually are the largest part in humanities and social science projects.

One of my students wants to do a project on word separation in manuscripts. The project is very interesting, but unfortunately I have no experience with any Indian languages/scripts. Can anyone recommend

a) a database of transcribed (not transliterated) Sanskrit texts;

or

b) a palaeographical manual for Sanskrit?

@histodons

felwert,
@felwert@mstdn.social avatar

@litteracarolina @histodons With transcribed vs transliterated, you mean with word boundaries inserted/Sandhi split? Actually, this is something we're very interested in. The digital corpus of Sanskrit contains both original transliteration and split words. http://www.sanskrit-linguistics.org/dcs/index.php We're also in contact with researchers who are actively working on improvements in these areas, if you need some names.

felwert,
@felwert@mstdn.social avatar

@litteracarolina @histodons Also, if the CONLL format is the DCS is a barrier, we also have some scripts to convert them into TEI with choice elements for the original and split words.

felwert,
@felwert@mstdn.social avatar

@litteracarolina @histodons Re original script, FID4SA maintains a collection of ground truth data for HTR that might be useful. https://heidata.uni-heidelberg.de/dataverse/FID4SA Re Sandhi splitter, Oliver Hellwig's Sanskrit parser contains one, and Sebastian Nehrdig is working on a more modern one. Sven Sellmer wrote a simple regex-based one for Pali that I have lying around somewhere, but apparently Pali is simpler in that regard.

felwert,
@felwert@mstdn.social avatar

@litteracarolina @histodons But all of these work on transliterated texts.
