Every time someone sings praises of how “peaceful” and “nice” the Fediverse is, you should add “for white cis people and mostly men” in your head, because that’s what it is and I’m tired of seeing the same take from the same people over and over again.

And if you feel the urge to reply sth like “if you don’t like it here, leave”, you’re part of the problem. Also, I do like it here. That doesn’t mean everything is great and above criticism.

Actually, such observations always wake my curiosity where these people spend their time in the Fediverse*. I don't doubt those experiences, I just don't experience it myself. Of course, sometimes someone links or screenshots corresponding toots or whole conversations. But I don't stumble upon them myself.

*I know, they don't. The trouble is coming for them.

Maybe you already know it, but I stumbled upon it only a few months ago. It seems one could integrate Mastodon threads into static websites: https://carlschwan.eu/2020/12/29/adding-comments-to-your-static-blog-with-mastodon/ is only one of many articles explaining how to achieve this.

I'm still not entirely sure of the consequences this would have. But I like the idea.

Wir weisen zwar auch regelmäßig darauf hin, mit welcher Doppelmoral die AfD ständig argumentiert, aber es soll mal klar gesagt sein, dass Heuchelei beim Rechtsextremismus die Regel ist, keine Ausnahme. Ungleichbehandlung ist ein fundamentaler Kern des Rechtsextremismus.

"Wir sind besser/wertvoller/haben mehr verdient als ihr/die anderen" ist das Grundprinzip & -problem von Rechtsextremismus. Dass sie mit zweierlei Maß messen ist kein Vorwurf, der sie zum Nachdenken anregt, im Gegenteil. Konsistente Moral ist ihnen egal. Sie wollen nur gewinnen.

Wer meint, dass Ungleichbehandlung die Maxim ist, der guckt darauf, wer etwas tut, um es moralisch zu bewerten, nicht, was getan wird. Nur wer Gleichbehandlung will, bewertet Taten, nicht Täter. Das sollte uns allen stets bewusst sein im Diskurs und in der Analyse.

AFAIK, to build a desktop pc comparable to the Mac Mini you should resort to Mini PC barebones, e.g. https://store.minisforum.de/products/minisforum-um790-pro.

There are news reports that AMD's Ryzen Z1 Extreme is very competitive and more powerful than the M1 in the Mac Mini at a similar or lower power consumption. That suggests it might be possible for OEMs to build Mini PCs with quiet fans or none at all. Alas, currently there are none.

Though I don't know how the iGPUs of Z1 and M1 compare.

Today I learned about wet bulb temperature:

It’s the lowest temperature in a given environment that can be reached by evaporating water (e.g. sweating). At 100% relative air humidity the regular ambient temperature and wet bulb are the same. At lower humidity wet bulb is lower because the air can still absorb additional vapor. Humans generally can’t survive for long at wet bulb temperatures of 35°C (95°F) and higher.

This measurement might become much more widely used as dangerous heat conditions become more common.

Not popular but the filebot cli command always confuses me with its strange behaviour of using single dash for non-parametrizable arguments and double dash for parametrizable arguments. Or was it the other way round?

I like the convention of single dash for short arguments and double dash for long arguments and I'm irrationally angry at programs that use single dashs for long arguments. Looking at you, find and openssl!

With all social media silos imploding, I can't wait for people to go back to writing and broadcasting from personal websites; except now that RSS is thoroughly dead, people will need to set up an ActivityPub node and a CDN, and we're all going back to mailing lists and newsletters, aren't we?

How is RSS dead? I can still subscribe to millions of feeds. Every instance of Discourse supports RSS, every instance of WordPress. The utility of some feeds degenerated due to paywalls but I'd say there's more RSS than ever.

But yes, there is a growing share of sites without RSS.
