I can't remember all the details of my dream but I do recall having to troubleshoot the activeX support in my VR headset, so I don't think it was a good dream

Someone on tumblr asked why 3.5" floppy disks seem so much more friendly (or "pleasant and edible" to use their terminology) than 5.25" floppy disks, so I wrote about it:

https://www.tumblr.com/foone/750216135935492096/why-do-35-inch-floppy-disks-seem-so-much-more

TL;DR: It's because Sony.

@vwestlife what, isn't this how you watch all your VHS tapes?

this electrical device is a special sort of terrible: They labeled the polarity of the DC power jack, but not the voltage (or current, for that matter)

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

gonna assume that just means I can throw whatever I want at it.

97v 19amp, here I come!

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I shouldn't have to disassemble your device and find the voltage regulator and read the datasheets to know how many volts to give you!

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

It's an L7805: so the max voltage is 35v, recommended voltage is about 10v?

I love when sites have 1.5factor authentication.

You put in your username, and it's like "hey, log in with a code to your phone, or a password!" and my password manager already filled the password, so I just hit continue.

and then it asks me to verify a code it sent to my phone anyway for 2fa

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

so your options are login with phone, or login with password, but verify with phone

Flying a Cessna Skyhawk low over Stoke-on-Trent and dropping "bibles" like I'm some sort of Christian missionary, but it turns out it's copies of Julia Serano's Whipping Girl, but they've been hollowed out and it's full of estrodiol valerate and cyproterone acetate

@molly0xfff annoyingly I've written about this before. It's solely because of people who have copies of the blockchain stored on offline/unplugged computers that wouldn't get fried.

But let it be known that if society falls, me and my gang of roving bdsm-core warriors will be finding and smashing every one of those computers.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@aburka @molly0xfff yeah. And most crucially, it'd provide a way for people to bring the blockchain back online once technological civilization is restored.

Thus the smashing

The opportunism of cats. The sheepishness of sheep.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@terrygrundy oh hey! I've read this is actually a chemical thing: sheep wool contains lanolin oil, and so does the fur of nursing cats. So cats smell it and are like "why does this big fluffy thing smell like momma?"
You'll sometimes see cats sitting on top of sheep and kneading them, in exactly the way kittens do to encourage milk production!

Interesting article about people using floppy disks today:

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240510-floppy-disks-why-some-people-are-still-in-love-with-this-obsolete-computer-storage-technology

Growing up, I used 5¼ and then 3½ floppies to store everything. They were ubiquitous. 💾💾💾

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@freedosproject they make a mistake in metricizing the size of 3.5" disks: they were already metric! 5.25" and 8" were made by American companies, but 3.5" disks are by Sony, so they were designed in metric. They're 90mm disks.

Here's a weird question: so Dynix made a text-based library catalog system that used Wyse terminals, and they shipped them with custom keyboards. They had four keys above the numpad: one of these keys was Start Over/New Search.

Does anyone remember having used these terminals, and recall what those other keys were?

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

Dynix is this system:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynix_(software)

The menu system looked like this:

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

And I've looked through all the pictures I can find of it and they're all like this: showing the keyboard, but cropped before you can see the buttons on the right.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

Here's a picture of the keyboard from a non-Dynix Wyse WY-30 terminal: you can see there's 4 function keys on top of the numpad. Those were customized for the Dynix version.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@pearl yeah, sadly none of the manuals I can find list the keyboards. They were optional, so they probably came with some documentation, but I don't have it
