LEFT: Stephen Gillers insisting Sam Alito cannot possibly have known that the flag flying outside his home was upside down, and anyone who says otherwise lacks objectivity.

RIGHT: Sam Alito's workplace, with flags in every direction.

Pretty sure Alito knows what the damn flag looks like.

A photo of the interior of the Supreme Court, with real big flags on each side of the bench upon which Sam Alito sits during oral arguments.

one reason things are as f*cked as they are is elites like Stephen Gillers just insist on keeping their heads stuck in the sand.

@heidilifeldman On January 12, 2021 Sam Alito's hometown newspaper ran a photo of insurrectionists flying an upside-down flag at the capitol, so I think mayyyybe Alito might've been clued in when he flew such a flag over his home days later.

Sam Alito can blame his wife, he can blame his neighbors, he can blame his dog. But with not just one but two insurrectionist flags flying over Alito's houses, nobody's buying his excuses. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/22/us/justice-alito-flag-appeal-to-heaven.html

Today, Texas Governor Greg Abbott pardoned a convicted murderer and virulent racist who, after writing text messages suggesting he would kill a protester and then claim self-defense, killed a protester and claimed self-defense. I wrote this a year ago:

Greg Abbott's pardon of a virulent racist convicted of murdering an anti-police-violence protester, as well as Donald Trump's repeated suggestions he will pardon those who are violent on his behalf, are calls to action. They are about the future, not the past. https://www.findinggravity.net/p/republican-politicians-embrace-another

foser,
@foser@mastodon.social avatar

It is not coincidental that Daniel Perry, the murderer Greg Abbott pardoned today, is a virulent racist who telegraphed his intent to go out hunting for someone to kill. Abbott wants people like Perry emboldened -- and everyone else afraid. https://www.findinggravity.net/p/republican-politicians-embrace-another

Here's more on Perry's violent racism. (Warning: Extremely graphic.) https://www.texastribune.org/2023/04/14/daniel-perry-racist-comments-texas-shooting-austin-protester/

foser,

In pardoning this murderer, Greg Abbott claimed Perry was "standing his ground."

Bullshit. Perry told friends he would kill a protester then claim self defense ... and then he went out and killed a protester and claimed self defense.

That isn't standing your ground, that's hunting.

Ignore the performative, nonsensical whining about norms: The Biden campaign was right to reject the Commission on Presidential Debates' bad debate schedule. The GOP-led commission has been a mess for decades: https://www.findinggravity.net/p/the-biden-campaign-is-right-not-to

foser,
@foser@mastodon.social avatar

In a perfect microcosm of American politics & media, the Commission on Presidential Debates has always been led by a Republican executive director and routinely favors the GOP, yet the GOP whines about it constantly and media privilege those complaints.

You'll never believe this, but I have some critical things to say about The New York Times: https://www.findinggravity.net/p/the-new-york-times-protests-too-much

foser,
@foser@mastodon.social avatar

The NYT responds to clear, principled criticism like campaign hacks, inventing straw men to lash out at. This response also inadvertently confirms the substance of the criticism: That NYT treats asymmetrical things as symmetrical in service of false "balance." https://www.findinggravity.net/p/the-new-york-times-protests-too-much

foser,
@foser@mastodon.social avatar

NYT leadership, from the latest Sulzberger down, constantly pat themselves on the back for their "independent" journalism--and in the next breath tell us their coverage is designed to appeal to Republicans. https://www.findinggravity.net/p/the-new-york-times-protests-too-much

foser,
@foser@mastodon.social avatar

“Balanced” journalism doesn’t mean coverage that makes the candidates look equal, it means coverage that applies the same standards to both candidates. https://www.findinggravity.net/p/the-new-york-times-protests-too-much

The New York Times has mentioned Christopher Rufo more often in the last year than at least 4 cabinet officials (I didn't check them all) https://www.findinggravity.net/p/the-new-york-times-is-a-right-wing

The Supreme Court Stephen Breyer served on handed George W. Bush the White House, gutted the Voting Rights Act, overturned Roe v Wade, and invited corporations to flood our elections with cash.

It was a tool wielded by America's political minority to impose their will on the rest of us. But they did it as friends, so it's cool I guess.
