I am currently using an old laptop (circa 2015) with a 250GB SSD in it, and 4GB of RAM. It runs Fedora 39 Server, and only hosts a Jellyfin instance through Docker right now (though I want to use Nextcloud later too). There is only 15GB of storage left on it, and the CPU is constantly overloaded (due to forced transcoding). I...
My go to for home servers for like 20 years has been used dell optiplexes. They are quite reliable, easy to find, pretty cheap, come in a few different standard physical sizes, and last a long time. The one thing they could do better at is energy efficiency. I spent a total of US $450 on the last two that I bought. I added an LSI HBA to one and it runs 4 HDDs in raidz1.
Will British Airways be required to have separate toilets for men and women on their planes? If not, what is the reason for the inconsistency? If it’s allowed on an airplane, why is it not allowed on the ground?
Were you able to run headless without installing snapd? I tried and tried, but there was some shared library dependency that always led to me having snapd installed, and after fighting with it repeatedly I found it easier to switch to Debian.
It’s really disappointing that snapd has even infected headless installs. I loved Ubuntu on headless, and I still use it as a docker base image.
I live in rural suburbia and after buying an ebike I almost never drive. That’ll change when winter comes. For now, everything I do often that doesn’t require taking the kids with me, I take the bike. Liquor store, cafe, corner store, park, pleasure ride, picking up a burger or sandwich but not a pizza, exploring, all better on a bike. Better fitness, more enjoyment, and cheaper.
zfs is made for data integrity. I wouldn’t use anything else for my backups. If a file is corrupted, it will tell you which file when it encounters a checksum error while reading the file.
If there is a redundant block then it will auto recover and just report what happened. Redundancy can be set up with multiple disks or by having a single disk write blocks to multiple places by setting the “copies” property to more than 1.
The original position is designed to be a fair and impartial point of view that is to be adopted in our reasoning about fundamental principles of justice. In taking up this point of view, we are to imagine ourselves in the position of free and equal persons who jointly agree upon and commit themselves to principles of social and political justice for a well-ordered democratic society.

I’m getting tired of the extremely loud ads on that don’t seem to be subject to the old TV broadcasting laws that prevent them from being blasted 10db louder than the actual content. Wondering if there’s stuff out there that would let me take the hdmi stream from my Apple TV or other streaming source, and do ad detection...
You can get an unencrypted hdmi out by using a splitter. I do this to record video with camlink. This is the splitter I use between a dedicated device like a firetv and the camlink: a.co/d/clpveZh

All things I’m not interested in that tend to fall into these categories:
hyperlocal geographies
sports
specific games
specific hobbies
programming languages and other technologies
porn
meme groups about subcultures I’m not a part of
shitposting
subs where it seems everything is cross posted to another sub
pretty much all music subs (i’m not here for music)
pretty much all video subs (i’m not here for videos)
Edit: I’ve probably also blocked a handful of obscurely named subs that have no description or shit descriptions. Like a sub called grobslafup and the description is “everything related to grobslafup!” As if people know what the obscure thing is but don’t know that a sub titled after it is going to be related to it. 🙄
