If you had told me that “tip”, as in pay a gratuity, was an acronym, I would have been skeptical. But it may have originated in English Coffeehouses in the 1800s as an abbreviation for “To Insure Promptitude”.

And now for something completely different!

This (12/28/23) afternoon I’m hosting a fill-in radio show on WMBR completely outside my usual modern classical wheelhouse.

I’ll be taking listeners on a tour of the indie band scene in Kansas in the 90s, playing music by Action Man, The Creature Comforts, Exit 159, Kill Creek, El Fontain, Sufferbus,Truck Stop Love & Ultimate Fakebook.

From 4-5:30pm ET on WMBR Cambridge 88.1 FM streaming on https://wmbr.org.

Cover of Exit 159’s album “A Song For Every Mood”, featuring a photo of the three member band.
Cover of Truck Stop Love’s self-titled album, featuring a distorted image of the Johnny Kaw statue from the city park in Manhattan, Kansas.
Cover of Kill Creek’s album “St. Valentine’s Garage”, featuring a cook preparing trays of heart shaped cookies.

The Real Reason for Marriage Polarization (a response to Washington Post’s editorial)

"It is not irrational for women with socially liberal values to avoid dating people who think that they should be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term, that they should forgo their career once a child is born, that women’s suffrage was a bad idea, or that they should not be allowed to get divorced if the relationship does not work out.”

“The idea that in the 1970s a trans woman would be openly practicing as a psychiatrist is revolutionary by itself, when the profession was still struggling to depathologize homosexuality,” Dr. Gill-Peterson said by phone. “But knowing that your psychiatrist understood what it was like to be in your shoes was a tidal shift.”
