Still a shitty thing to do when instructions aren't clear, but the solution would require individual interaction ("show me you can do this with an analog face and I'll mark it correct")

Thinking about organisms that can survive in arid conditions by becoming totally desiccated. On the macro scale the eggs or suspended forms of these creatures aren't very different from the dry soil & jumbled organic matter that surround them. But, due to their structure, they can begin living again.

Is it too much to say that the difference between living & dead organic material is... encoding?

Naively it seems like this boundary is a place to look for the origins of living processes.

@futurebird did the Three Body Problem get you thinking about this? I have no idea how the show is handling it but this was a huge part of the book, and what a society might look like built by sapients with this kind of unpredictable estivation.

A Deepness in the Sky, by Vernor Vinge, also dealt with something similar, though it was more predictable (a variable star that dramatically cooled periodically) and based on freezing solid rather than desiccating. There's a world war that's been in a stalemate for many cycles until one side develops the technology to remain active long enough after the freeze to attack the enemy refuges

Happy International Cotylorhyncus Day everyone!

You probably have some questions.

  1. What?

Cotylorhyncus was a synapsid from the Permian era, a tetrapod ancestral to mammals. They look somewhat like dinosaurs but are actually not related (the other major clade at the time were the sauropsids, which gave rise to birds and reptiles). He is notable for his head too small for he got damn body.

  1. Why his head too small for he got damn body?

It seems likely that the enormous barrel shaped torso was needed to house voluminous intestines. This would be a crude solution to the need to eat large quantities of low quality forage and then ferment it to get usable nutrients, the same way that ruminants do today with their four chambered stomachs.

  1. Why is today International Cotylorhyncus Day?

Two years ago, I discovered this delightful dumbass and posted about him. Completely coincidentally, so did @checkervest. We decided this guy deserves his own holiday, and thus it began.

Size comparison of Cotylorhyncus and a human. The Cotylorhyncus is 6 meters tip to tail but only comes up to the human's waist, and the head is approximately the same size as the human's.
Cotylorhyncus and a predatory synapsid, possibly anteosaurus, which has an oversized skull in proportion to its body in order to kill large prey. Cotylorhyncus asks "where do you work out" and anteosaurus replies "at the library"
