When working on any kind of software that has a user interface, you should never dismiss accessibility as a secondary concern. It must be taken into account at every step, starting from the design.

And remember: no matter how able-bodied you are now, you'll need it too, eventually.

Negative reviews on that begin with "this game is too expensive" drive me crazy. Seriously, I'll be the judge of that. If you feel like penalizing an independent game because you think it's too expensive you're an asshole.

gabrielesvelto,
@gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

@leeloo a $50 game is almost certainly made by a big studio who can take the flack if their game's too short and they've been too greedy.

Most of those type of reviews are leveled at indie games in the $10-20 range. It's maddening because for many independent developers that's the main source of income, and negative reviews will actually hurt them.

I haven't touched AF_UNIX sockets in a while and I find myself going back to the manpages every five minutes now that I have to.

Traditional Unix APIs can be extremely confusing, especially due to their reliance on a limited number of type-agnostic functions plus a bunch of flags and a size parameter to tell the different types apart.

We can design better ones now and we shouldn't be afraid to.

I rarely drive. I had to drive across London today. Main thought, was how utterly filthy the whole place looks, everything caked in grey dirt - thrown up by a bazillion cars.

Going through Tooting, there where Susana Hill Anti Ulez Plackards taped to junction railings.

They were filthy, too.
Perhaps more so. 😕

@blabberlicious having to drive across London sounds like some form of cruel punishment to me, what did you do to deserve that?

Google target ads: are you selling your car? Do you wanna know how much it's worth?

No, I don't have a car, I never owned one in fact, never bought one in the first place. You spent billions and intruded everybody privacy and now you're likely ripping off advertisers too, pretending that their ads go to people who actually care even when they don't.

@ko4fzg installing takes time, but keeping it around is a piece of cake. I have installations that are two decades old.

gabrielesvelto,

@ko4fzg I did and using binary packages no less. I hit a couple of snags because not all packages were ready to work on split-usr profiles, but they were all promptly fixed after I reported them. I'd say that it should go pretty smoothly now.

Today my 9yo daughter asked me a surprisingly pointed question about the dwarves of : if they dug an entire underground realm, where did they put all the material excavated during the process?

gabrielesvelto,

@datarama there was a great joke in Divine Divinity on this:

P: What is the reason for the relatively small stature of dwarven people?
H: It's an economy measure. If we were any taller, we'd have to dig bigger tunnels to get about.
P: How tall can dwarves grow?
H: There was once a dwarf who never drank mead or ale. Poor bugger grew to the height of four dwarves on top of each other. That's why we dwarves drink alcohol from birth - to stunt our growth to a decent size.

i really like the weight and feel and accuracy of logitech G pro mouse but jesus fucking christ why dont they make these in a way where the left click doesn't die every 1-1.5 years?

EDIT: tbh this is one of the rare occasions that i wouldn't mind suggestions for alternatives. just, don't recommend shit that is significantly heavier or a different form factor from a bog standard office mouse, thats why i like the G pro

gabrielesvelto,
@gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

@eniko shitty micro-switches? Given the price of those things it might be worth replacing them with better ones when they break. De-soldering and re-soldering is easy and only requires a cheap soldering iron and some solder. If you've never soldered anything it's a good starting point because the pads are large and widely spaced on the PCB.

This is gonna be fun: OpenAI runs afoul of the GDPR because it generates false information about individuals and they don't have full access to the data that pertains to them.

From the article:

I've started playing The Witcher 2 only 13 years after it launched and 17 years after finishing the first one... and I'm immediately reminded that all the female characters appear to have been written by a horny teenager.

gabrielesvelto,

@dotstdy I think I saw that article back in the day. The whole cards thing in the first one was absolutely ridiculous. The dialogues where hilarious (I like flowers / here's some flowers / fade to black) and the mechanism was... totally pointless? It had no effect on the game or story whatsoever, it really felt like someone tacked it on at the last minute just to put some nudies in the game. Even in 2007 it felts like some sexist relic from an era gone by.

omar, to random

neither macOS nor Linux feels much like "Unix" when you do non-1970s stuff (graphics, webcam, low-overhead profiling, introspection, some networking, IPC and weird MMU stuff, low-overhead polling/IO/subscriptions)

but Linux at least tries with /proc and /dev/videoX and new file descriptors like userfaultfd and pidfd and so on (and fork(2) still kinda works). macOS really makes no attempt to be Unix-like in comparison https://social.omar.website/@omar/statuses/01HWGZM1ACNS48HEQMFBCW0VAY

gabrielesvelto,
@gabrielesvelto@fosstodon.org avatar

@omar since macOS uses mach under the hood it does all kind of horrors to emulate Unix features. Their fork() implementation is the thing nightmares are made of. And don't get me started on signals. Signals are wrapped into mach messages to be delivered, but some mach messages are also converted to signals by the kernel if you have a signal handler installed. Using native mach exception handling and signals is possible but nightmarish. I could go on for a while...
