My old Eve Weather (the white one with no screen) is starting to die. What’s the best weather station with HomeKit support these days? Netatmo?

gahms,
@gahms@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I have a Netatmo and I love it. Both HomeKit and Home Assistant support is great I think. Netatmo app works well and have good widgets.

Currently I am using the built-in microphone in my iPhone 15 Pro.

I am sorry to be a downer, but I give @delta a week at most before it is hit by a Cease & Desist letter from Nintendo.
There’s no way in hell they’ll let emulators for their consoles exist in the App Store. And unless the developers (or the EU?) are ready to fight them in court, at huge costs, this will be a short-lived “freedom”.

gahms,
@gahms@mastodon.social avatar

@layoutSubviews Is “Cease & Desist” even a thing in EU? I was under the impression that in EU you had to go to trial to get anything like that through?

    @schwa This is one of the things I love about Flutter. If there is a built-in widget that does something I want to replicate or better understand I can always step into it and see how it is implemented.

    Because I often switch between SwiftUI and Flutter, this particular difference really stands out.

    Incredibly often, it seems that Safari fails to load a website. It happens both on my Mac and iPhone and has been happening for a long time. I think this has to do with my WiFi, but I fail to see anything unusual in my Ubiquiti setup.

    Anyone seeing similar issues with Safari, or is this some issue in my Internet setup?

    (Yes, I've tried disabling all extensions)

    gahms,
    @gahms@mastodon.social avatar

    @bigzaphod @simonbs I think most ISPs have CG NAT or will switch to it eventually. If you pay for a static IP you get rid of it.

    gahms,
    @gahms@mastodon.social avatar

    @simonbs Bummer.

    Some of them hides the fact that the actually have the possibility. They really do not want to sell it to you until you tell them that you are “a gamer and really need it”

    There have been huge parts of the iPad Simulator broken since iOS 16 & the introduction of Stage Manager and nobody has noticed/bothered to fix them 🤷‍♂️

    You haven't been able to drag app icons out into windows in two simulator OS releases — the standard way to initiate multitasking.

    Holding the cmd key to show the keyboard shortcuts panel sends SpringBoard to the lockscreen the first time each launch. It's a pain to debug keyboard commands.

    The iPad app development experience reeks of neglect

    gahms,
    @gahms@mastodon.social avatar

    @stroughtonsmith Yes! Also: Cannot re-arrange home screen. Makes it impossible to make “clean” screenshots and videos.

    No, Apple, I'm not going to pay a solicitor to translate a government-issued ID just to convince you that I have actually changed my address. Does it really have to be this complicated, Apple?

    gahms,
    @gahms@mastodon.social avatar

    @simonbs Dio you have a “personal” or “company” Apple developer account?

    gahms,
    @gahms@mastodon.social avatar

    @simonbs Suspected that. Probably won’t work for us then.

    Last time I had to change address it took me a loooong time. Ended up paying a few hundred DKK to get a certificate (paper) with a stamp on from a local business org (BusinessAalborg I think).

    Funny thing is they explicitly state that the only thing they vouch for is that I signed the paper in front of them. They did explicitly NOT vouch for the correctness of anything on the paper with the new address.

    As a developer based in the EU, of course I want to be able to sign on to Apple's new business terms and access the hard-won benefits of the DMA (like external distribution).

    But there’s no way I ever would with the specter of a CTF hanging over, even if I never build an app that hits 1M annual downloads.

    @rileytestut tried to convince me to build something for AltStore, and I've had several huge Cydia-distributed projects in the past. But Apple's new business terms are currently a no-go

    gahms,
    @gahms@mastodon.social avatar

    @stroughtonsmith This is the only angle that matters as I see it. If nobody accepts the terms in practice it does not matter how reasonably they seem.

    The only outcome EU should accept is one where EU developers actually use the new terms.

    simonbs, to random
    @simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

    Web Distribution in the EU sounds like it could be a big deal for several of the clients I work with 👀

    Will need to read up on this when I’m back from vacation 🇳🇴⛷️

    gahms,
    @gahms@mastodon.social avatar

    @simonbs I would be really interested to hear more if you get longer down this road.

    I think the core tech fee and the “all in” parts will make it a show stopper for the clients I would otherwise think could be interested.

    As the “Organizer” of the family, there should be an easy way for me to remotely schedule a software update for all of our Apple devices.
    Right now I have to hunt every device around the house, which is becoming real annoying real fast.
    Also why can’t the Apple TV be updated from the Home app like the HomePod can?

    gahms,
    @gahms@mastodon.social avatar

    @layoutSubviews I cannot even schedule update of my own watch realiably. It is on a charger by my bedside with good wifi and fails night after night to update. Often have to update manually.

    Then there is my wifes iPad that does not have enough free space despite having very little but the OS installed.

    you get a message in Slack with a link to the Confluence doc to prep for the meeting on Zoom, where you take notes in Notion, and track project progress on Monday and then update the Trello and you get to the end of the week and instead of doing fucking anything you've just moved bits of information around in 17 different databases and each one costs $15 a month per user...

    As an Apple shareholder, I wish Apple wouldn’t push for services revenue. How much better of a company would they be, if it was mostly about selling cool devices that everybody wanted to use? Would they make less money? Yes. Would they still be insanely profitable? Also yes!

    gahms,
    @gahms@mastodon.social avatar

    @Migueldeicaza @jamesthomson I thought that “services revenue” for Apple mostly consist of gambling apps (or games more broadly) and Google search kickback?

    gahms,
    @gahms@mastodon.social avatar

    @Migueldeicaza @jamesthomson Ok then I am mistaken.

    That is just the impression I got from listening to (and reading) Gruber, Ben Thomson, the ATP gang and others.

    If I have an app that has less than a million installs in the EU, and want to STAY with AppStore Distribution (not take advantage of the marketplaces), is there ANY reason why I should stay with the current TERMS? The new terms are always better, or am I holding it wrong?

    With the release of iOS 17.3, Stolen Device Protection is now generally available. This is one of my favorite new iOS features. You will want to turn on Stolen Device Protection as it provides a great additional security layer for everyone, but particularly for those of us who use iCloud Keychain.

    Turn on Stolen Device Protection by opening Settings, selecting Face ID & Passcode, and then choosing Turn On Protection under Stolen Device Protection.

    @simonbs One thing I find unsettling is that I seem to have 136 “Significant Locations”, including a spot where I waited 10 min for my daughter on a parking lot outside city hall.

    I do not feel particular attached to that spot nor particular safe.
