Incredibly often, it seems that Safari fails to load a website. It happens both on my Mac and iPhone and has been happening for a long time. I think this has to do with my WiFi, but I fail to see anything unusual in my Ubiquiti setup.

Anyone seeing similar issues with Safari, or is this some issue in my Internet setup?

(Yes, I've tried disabling all extensions)

@Kitone@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs Same here. Ubiquiti setup, too. Pi-hole, 1Blocker and Lockdown (I know!). Always thought it’s a DNS blacklist issue, but, according to the comments above, it might not be that. Will try disabling UPnP.

@simonbs Constantly. Regardless of network I'm connected to, wired or wireless.

@simonbs I’m having this issue with “prevent cross site tracking”

Private Relay was not the cause of my issues with Safari. Still seeing issues today after I disabled Private Relay yesterday 😞

@bigzaphod@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I had a lot of problems like this - not just Safari, but tons of other things like push notifications taking forever to arrive, Messages between computers on the same network taking 5+ minutes, the 2-factor auto-fill feature taking so long to get the message from my phone to my computer that the code expires, etc.

ALL of this went away when my ISP upgraded their network. I believe the core problem was they were running what's called "Carrier-grade NAT," but then they got rid of it.

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@bigzaphod Interesting! I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try and switch my ISP. At this point I’m willing to try anything.

bigzaphod,
@bigzaphod@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs assuming I'm right and it was the carrier-grade NAT stuff, the problem is probably just because of the double NAT that gets created since most routers also add a NAT. So in theory it might be possible to workaround it by turning off NAT/DHCP on your router and letting all your devices basically talk directly to the ISP to get their IP, etc. They might not appreciate that, though, depending on their policy. And that could maybe be a security risk depending on their configs, probably.

bigzaphod,
@bigzaphod@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs although it might work for awhile just to try to see if it helps, I guess.

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@bigzaphod I’ll have a look to see if that’s possible in my router. Thanks a lot for the advice!

gahms,
@gahms@mastodon.social avatar

@bigzaphod @simonbs I think most ISPs have CG NAT or will switch to it eventually. If you pay for a static IP you get rid of it.

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@gahms Unfortunately, my ISP doesn’t offer static IP addresses.

gahms,
@gahms@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs Bummer.

Some of them hides the fact that the actually have the possibility. They really do not want to sell it to you until you tell them that you are “a gamer and really need it”

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@gahms The website of my ISP explicitly states that they do not offer static IPs and then proceed to list alternatives. It's a bummer but I kinda like their no-bullshit approach where they have only a single package you can buy from them and that's it.

jmovs,
@jmovs@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs do you use iCloud private relay?

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@jmovs Disabled it yesterday but I'm still seeing issues.

jmovs,
@jmovs@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs have you tried changing DNS servers to another one?

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@jmovs No, I'm using Cloudflare's and I would think that’s a great one but I could be wrong.

jmovs,
@jmovs@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs any significant packet loss across your hops maybe?

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@jmovs I'm not sure how to check this 🙈

jmovs,
@jmovs@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs you can install "mtr" via brew and then run sudo mtr 1.1.1.1 and see a combined ping and traceroute and see packet loss :)

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@jmovs Thanks! Giving it a shot right away.

icegorilla,
@icegorilla@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs yes, can confirm. Switched to Firefox, because it kept annoying me.

jloc0,
@jloc0@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I rarely use Safari in my Mac but this hasn’t happened to me on iOS. But this does happen constantly to me on Epiphany on Linux using WebKit-gtk and it drives me crazy. Generally I stick to Firefox unless it’s iOS because this issue happens far too often and I hate losing my place or work flow over WebKit issues.

darrarski,
@darrarski@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I see it from time to time in Safari on macOS and iOS, but also on Arc browser on macOS. The latter shows ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED. I have a feeling it's connected to iCloud Private Relay. Not a big issue anyway, it does not happen too often, and reloading page solves it.

harrisonheinig,
@harrisonheinig@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs this happens to me all the time. I end up having to restart Safari to get it to work.

I have this issue on my home network with a personal mac and on my job’s network with a work mac.

keir,
@keir@mastodon.design avatar

@simonbs it's not Private Relay perchance?

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@keir Might be. I forgot I had it enabled by I’ve tried disabling it and will see how it behaves over the next few days.

jasoncox,
@jasoncox@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs It happens a few times a month to me. Normally I have to restart Safari or, at the worst, reboot.

loverofapps,
@loverofapps@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs A few days ago I had this issue on my iPhone running iOS 16, I have never accounted an issue like this in all of my years using iPhones since the iPhone 3GS

bamber123,
@bamber123@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs Yes, on Mac and iOS.

chasedmartin,
@chasedmartin@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I haven’t had any issues loading pages that I can think of but safari has been super wonky for me lately that I’m willing to believe it

wajdi,
@wajdi@twit.social avatar

@simonbs @christianselig Try to reload without iCloud Private Relay (Show IP address option when right clicking on reload button). Most often it’s Cloudflare’s proxy servers acting up.

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@wajdi @christianselig I’ve tried disabling Private Relay altogether and will see if that makes a difference.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs @wajdi I've never enabled private relay so I don't think it's that :p

tvaughan,
@tvaughan@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I think it’s a too aggressive DNS caching issue with macOS. The fix for me is sudo kill -HUP mDNSresponder

preshit,
@preshit@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs Yes! Keeps happening every so often.

leopardboy,
@leopardboy@netmonkey.xyz avatar

@simonbs The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that if your upstream bandwidth is fully consumed, it'll slow down your downloads because TCP ACK's will take longer to transmit.

That's just a guess. Your router may be configured to avoid congestion issues like that, but I haven't touched Ubiquiti equipment in six years, and I've forgotten most of it.

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@leopardboy Ibteresting theory although I’d be surprised if that’s the case. I’m not using that much bandwidth.

devondundee,
@devondundee@mastodon.social avatar
cduvenhorst,
@cduvenhorst@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs Almost always this is DNS related - at least for me. Either iCloud Private Relay or PiHole. Give it a try and disable whatever you are using to intercept DNS requests.

Gray_Wind,
@Gray_Wind@mastodon.social avatar
developerjustin,
@developerjustin@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I don’t use Ubiquiti and I see this 2-3 times a week. I’ve never been able to see a pattern to it but I think @caseyliss reported this on a recent ATP too.

caseyliss,
@caseyliss@mastodon.social avatar

@developerjustin @simonbs Yeah I definitely see this periodically. Someone wrote to ATP off-handedly mentioning it was likely Safari's networking process getting stuck, but my brief experimentation did not corroborate it.

Kdude,
@Kdude@mastodon.social avatar
rowan_johnson,
@rowan_johnson@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs Yes, and I also use 1Blocker. I also use iCloud Private Relay. It’s definitely something specific to Safari for me, as Chrome usually works when it’s happening.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I thought it was just me! Only started happening somewhat recently. Been using Arc more because of it

Drarok,
@Drarok@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig @simonbs Safari is my daily driver and I don't think I've ever encountered this. Certainly not repeatedly! I don't have private relay on, if that data point adds anything. I also don't have tons of tabs/windows, maybe 20-30 tabs across 2-3 windows at most…
