What's your favourite thing?

All in all, is probably my favourite "thing". My Mastermind specialist subject.

But the video games. Oh the video games. Incredible casting. Wonderful humour. Insane object puzzles / clever lateral thinking exercises. And Rincewind.

gaprogman,
@gaprogman@hachyderm.io avatar

@PixelBandits I'm also a big fan of everything Discworld. Night Watch being my favorite thing within the Discworld things, and the first two point and click games being a close second.

I never got to meet Terry, but one of my friends was a close collaborator and I interviewed Greg Barnett (writer and director for the first two point and click games) a few years back.

gaprogman,
@gaprogman@hachyderm.io avatar

@PixelBandits the second game was my gateway drug into Discworld, too. I remember we had a demo disc (one of many) from one of the PlayStation magazines back in the day, and it was my goto for months.

gaprogman,
@gaprogman@hachyderm.io avatar

@PixelBandits that was the demo disc!

I'm going to have to dig it out and get it running on my old grey box now!

Absolute garbage feature, filled with complete made up nonsense, titled:
Your Complete Guide to...
The Japanese Gaming Lexicon
Taken from NGC Magazine 117 - March 2006 (UK)

Why they actually wasted all the time and effort to put this together is mind boggling.
Instead of doing some real research and using those 4 pages for something worthwhile that actually teaches people something. :cat_ick:

This magazine can be downloaded here:

@OutofPrintArchive as someone who speaks Japanese (albeit not at a native level, but can survive and thrive in non-English parts of Japan like Hirado) I sayv

WHAT? These are bonkers.

gaprogman,
@gaprogman@hachyderm.io avatar

@OutofPrintArchive the words are all Japanese words, but the meanings that they've listed are off the chain.

I wonder whether it was a case of, "JENKINS! We need a four page spread! Write about whatever! Make it up if you have to!"

Then again, it could be some kind of niche Japanese gaming slang. But the slang I know in Japanese is either very specific to a geographical area or very specific to a time period.

Then again, I'm gen Y, so maybe I'm too old to understand it.

A little context-free snippet of a future episode of MDNS. It might be of interest to @khalidabuhakmeh

gaprogman,
@gaprogman@hachyderm.io avatar

@khalidabuhakmeh the entire episode is about both HTMX and HATEOAS.

I have to admit that I'd used HATEOAS before, but hadn't used HTMX. That's going to change as I have an app that I'm looking to rebuild, and it seems pretty perfect for HTMX.

Finally been playing the Japanese only Dual Shock Directors Cut Biohazard (with notoriously bad soundtrack).

So far it mostly sounds like someone has discovered the autochord setting on a 90's Casio keyboard. It's not great. But also not so far quite as bad as I had imagined. There is apparently one particularly bad track in the basement I've yet to get to.

The balance also seems to make the music weirdly intrusive and hard to ignore

gaprogman,
@gaprogman@hachyderm.io avatar

@Hundstrasse it's what happens when someone who claimed to be deaf, and as such was hyped as the next Beethoven, gets hired to write the soundtrack for a special edition of a game.

gaprogman,
@gaprogman@hachyderm.io avatar

@Hundstrasse the way he was caught out was equally bonkers, too.

He was being interviewed by a journalist and had an assistant who would sign the questions to him. The journo thought something was up when his door bell rang, and he got up to answer before the assistant told him that it had rang.

gaprogman,
@gaprogman@hachyderm.io avatar

@Hundstrasse it really is.

I chatted with Alex Daniel (author of Itchy Tasty) about it, back in 2020. Give it a listen, if you're interested.

I'm interested in how listeners feel about ads. I listen to a lot of medium to large shows which have four to five ads per episode - usually back to back.

With The Modern .NET Show, I've always tried to focus on no more than one ad per episode (when I've sold one, that is).but how would listeners feel about multiple ads per episode?

Just looking for ways to keep the lights on.

gaprogman,
@gaprogman@hachyderm.io avatar

On the back of this: I'd rather the show was as independent as possible, and not have to rely on ads. And if you would too, can I recommend that you check out the Patreon and Buy Me A Coffee links for the show?

(links here https://dotnetcore.show/support/)

I've looked into V4V and Satoshis, but a combination of listener feedback and lack of support from the podcast feed host,has put me off.

Uh, if emulating old PC games is really easy on linux, I guess the Steam Deck got yet another argument in its favor.

gaprogman,
@gaprogman@hachyderm.io avatar

@LiKao as someone who plays a lot of retro PC games on a Linux-on-the-desktop PC, I can say that these days it feels super trivial to get stuff running. Most of the time it's:

  • install Lutris
  • search in the app for an installer
  • give the installer the files
  • play

I'm sure that there'll be a binary for Lutris for the SteamDeck. Or that there'll be a super trivial way to do something similar with the stuff built-in to SteamOS.
