People can get bothered about exact colours for websites but, ultimately, out in the world everone gets something slightly different anyway. Even under the same office lighting.

gilesdring,
@gilesdring@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@slowe Not to mention that people rarely have colour corrected monitors…

If you run a small business in the UK, what are your must have subscriptions?

Boosts very welcome!

gilesdring,
@gilesdring@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@bencurthoys @Edent I’ve moved off TeamViewer to AnyDesk and then to DWservice, which (for my purposes, at least) is easier to work with. Depends what you need it for.

gilesdring,
@gilesdring@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Edent I’m forever on the cusp of paying for Tailscale, but the free tier is so good. This mainly to access a big desktop I use for dev work that sits in my office at home which I remotely access (via VSCode SSH Remote), rather than paying for a cloud dev environment. Other than that, email, cloud storage, FreeAgent (invoicing and VAT) and an accountant. Oh, and insurance, which I got via BCS. Pretty much everything else I could do without, tbh…

@pikesley I recall need to get on with reading a load more Le Guin. Sought out (short story) Vaster Than Empires And More Slow a month or so ago and it was excellent.

I keep getting spam email suggesting I should write a book and offering to write, publish and promote it for me:

Every email I get has the same name, a sig for "Authors On Mission", but a different throwaway gmail address.

https://authorsonmission.com/

A Very Legitimate Business, I'm sure.

@Floppy @ldodds I am also actively not writing book!

Related: any interest in forming a procrastination club of some sort?

@ldodds @Floppy When I get round to writing them, that will be the first rule of Procrastination Club.

@ldodds @Floppy the second rule will be: TBC

@danhon Yes. Mine is approaching 30 years. I’m hanging on to that 25 for grim death. I mean, it’s still technically over 25 years, right?

London-adjacent Masto-friends with a penchant for music on the heavier end: The Armed play at Outernet on 12th June this year. Should be good. I’m going to be at the Leeds show the day before.

Thanks to @benjohn, @gilesdring and others who have helped me work out how to update HexJSON to include boundaries. I'll write it up soon.

gilesdring,
@gilesdring@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@slowe @benjohn thank you for the opportunity to use the word chirality.

gilesdring,
@gilesdring@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@benjohn @slowe You’re right about the redundancy… but, for example, having a Scotland / England border encoded only from Scottish or English hexes might make sense when it comes to maintenance (spoiler alert: geographies change! 🤣).

gilesdring,
@gilesdring@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@benjohn @slowe There’s also the fact that to continuous boundary around a single hex only allowing clockwise edges would require referencing four individual hexes, and if you decided to flip from even to odd layouts, that boundary would become discontinuous. Granted, this is an edge case, but the directionality allows slightly more expressive intent.

slowe, to random
@slowe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@benjohn Was it you who came up with a scheme for encoding lines in hex cartograms?

gilesdring,
@gilesdring@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@benjohn @slowe Oooh. Now that is interesting. I could envisage an implementation that used this - the border of area A and area B might be the shared at points, but offsetting towards the “owning” hex would allow both to be rendered.
