It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to it, but Clear by Bomb The Bass stands up supremely well. Not only for Bug Powder Dust (which absolutely SLAPPPPS!) but the rest as well…

@pikesley I mean, that’s the classic line. I realised only now that I actually knew about 50% of the lyrics, and most of those were wrong. The wonders of streaming services with integrated lyrics…

20 Years Of Dischord 1980-2000

For my tastes (which are admittedly not for everyone) this is one of those albums which brilliantly encapsulates the development of a significant portion of American DIY music. Sobering that this 20 year retrospective is now 23 years old.

It's genuinely exciting to speedrun one of the wellsprings of US hardcore and notice the exact time that movements like grunge spawned, and how the trajectory of Dischord bands just carried on ploughing their own furrows.

Outstanding tracks, each of which stand head and shoulders above their peers and represent a huge leap forward

Currently listening to Wig Out At Denko’s by Dag Nasty, which was an album I “discovered” (i.e. bought at the local indie record shop) and introduced to the gang of school friends who were listening to DC hardcore in Worcester (Worcestershire) (UK) in 1987 or so. It still sounds like the future. Sadly I no longer have my original vinyl LP. I re-bought it on CD in 2004 from a record shop in Chapel Hill North Carolina, which is possibly the closest I ever got to the source.

I don't claim to be a JavaScript expert but I did just redesign a 200KB+ slider component into a 1.18KB component, making it progressively enhanced and accessible in the process. 200KB is an outlier size, mind, extraordinary.

pikesley, to python
@pikesley@mastodon.me.uk avatar

I have a question: I want to stream audio through a (USB) microphone and do some FFT magic for beat-detection (I'm aware that Python might be a poor choice here but humour me please). I'm in way over my head so I've been trying to pick-apart whatever's out there, but most of the solutions I've found are deeply entwined with visualisations and whatnot, and I really don't want to have to install Qt or pygame or what have you

gilesdring,
@gilesdring@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@pikesley not experience to speak of, but could you bandpass filter the frequencies before using onset? Is there a way of having multiple signal chains?

gilesdring,
@gilesdring@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@pikesley yeah. FFT would be a potentially better avenue. Basically makes a histogram of frequency components. As long as you could do it fast enough it ought to be possible to pick out movements in particular frequencies. There is maths that has escaped me on a Saturday night relating bin size to sampling rate.
