@gruber Hiya, random question if you don't mind: Your original Markdown post had a suggested $50 fee for commercial use, did you ever get any payouts from that?

One of the earliest examples of trying to monetize open source! Curious how successful it was in that era.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@shazow Couple hundred bucks total. Maybe $1000 after a year or two? It didnโ€™t work. Everything was easier just giving up on monetizing it all and setting it free with a BSD style license.

@gruber The hydraulic press is implied.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@amigalove @limi Worked out really well for Commodore.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@amigalove @limi Donโ€™t get me wrong. I will admit I never used a Commodore 128, but I had friends with the C64 in the 80s and it was great. And Amiga, of course, was a full decade ahead of its time in some ways. Video Toaster!

But Iโ€™m saying that an ad campaign like this betrays a mindset at a company that is destined to lose.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@amigalove @limi When was Apple at its nadir, in genuine danger of disappearing? When they ran ads like this:

@gruber mentioned the iPad Pro is the probably the best piece of hardware Apple makes, but is limited by iPadOS. https://daringfireball.net/2024/05/the_m4_ipad_pros. This pretty much agrees with most reviewers. For example, @viticci wrote a wonderful article about the shortfall of iPadOS. https://www.macstories.net/author/viticci/

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@qazwart @viticci Not quite the same as a truly native terminal but if you haven't check out A-Shell: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/a-shell/id1473805438

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@qazwart @viticci When I hear "just give me a menu barโ€, I think you should just use a Mac.

@gruber Is there any chance I can convince you to put some sort of โ€œscroll (up) to next articleโ€ button on DF? Catching up on the iPhone (and trying to read in publication order) is difficult whenever you have a day with even slightly over-average productivity! For the long-form articles I currently click to go up to the first footnote and scroll up from thereโ€ฆ But I also appreciate that DF has so little cruft on it, so I can understand if you donโ€™t want to add more controls.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@johnaldis That's an interesting problem but I don't think it's appropriate, cruft-wise, for me to solve? I worry that that would be overthinking it.

@kavehv Good question! But I only use that pluralization schtick with iPhones, on the grounds that if I pluralize โ€œiPhone 6" as โ€œiPhone 6s", it's hard to distinguish from the actual phones named iPhone 6S, and the plural of that phone would be ... โ€œiPhone 6Ssโ€ which is just horrible.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@jemal That's an interesting theory. Speedometer repaints the display as fast as it can when it runs; Geekbench just shows a progress bar. Perhaps that accounts for the discrepancy?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@tambourineman Agreed that those background limits are absurd. But I can't help but think Apple could remove those limits without fundamentally changing iPadOS.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@tambourineman Same thing for my longstanding gripe that iOS doesn't support clipboard managers. It could, if Apple created APIs for it, without fundamentally changing iOS into something akin to the Mac.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Jmccray Glad to hear that. Been challenging my own thinking on this.

@gruber @davemark
Steve Jobs: Weโ€™re going to make a device that combines others because that is progress. Itโ€™s called an iPhone and it is the pocket version of a phone, a mail service, a tv starting with YouTube, a primitive but evolving music studio and lots more. Tim Cook: For me to continue with progress like the one Steve was into is by making one device from two devices. The iPad and the MacBook but iโ€™m not into that when i can sell two instead of one.
Agree?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@david1280 @davemark Completely and strenuously disagree. If Apple thought that either MacBooks or iPads would be better if they were more like the other, theyโ€™d make them more like the other. That's how they sell devices.

If they were to start deliberately making products worse than they could be with the idea that this helps them sell other products, that's the road to ruin. It's just not how Apple's culture works though, thankfully.

cdevroe, to random
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber You'll appreciate this, or, you'll wish I hadn't sent this to you. In the HIG, Apple clearly states that primary buttons should be โ€œon the trailing sideโ€. Under Components > Menus and actions > Buttons, they include this imageโ€ฆ

Do they do this just to confuse us? Or, am I misreading the HIG?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@cdevroe Seems like a mistake to me. I can't see how it couldn't be. Although the advice to order the primary button "on the trailing side" isn't on that page, it's on the Presentation โ†’ Alerts page, so maybe someone there thinks this example is not alert-like enough for that to apply?

But I agree with you. It just rubs my eye for UI idioms wrong to see this.

royalicing, to random
@royalicing@hachyderm.io avatar

@gruber You mentioned iPadOS being separate from iOS by marketing brand only on a recent podcast.

The clearest sign of this is in Xcode. Thereโ€™s no distinct iPadOS, only iOS:

gruber,

@royalicing Agreed, that sort of says it all.

The NYTimes coverage of the Trump trial is killing me because whatever tools they are using in the field leave some quotes and apostrophes straight, and makes others curly. Why are they doing this to me? https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/05/10/nyregion/trump-trial-hush-money

@kjhealy @hotdogsladies @ironicsans But the NYT, like me, doesn't allow subjects to define how their names are cased. The Times goes with Mac Mini, not mini. And surely they would not go with BEN PROTESS just because he styles it that way himself.

@gruber I think itโ€™s good that Apple has apologised for the Crush ad; it would be even better to hear about the choices that lead to - eg the piano - being crushed.

Were those new things, or recycled/recovered things?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@dcrooks By that logic every single practical stunt in movie and TV history has been immoral. It's fine to break things for fun once in a while. There is no piano-less school because Apple (might have) smashed one.

("Might have" = who knows what was CGI in that spot?)
