It has been a good day for Esc key fans.

Hey @gruber here’s a word choice question for ya. In the iPad Air announcement they described interacting with something on screen as “a click”, and for iPad Pro they said “a tap”. Are they interchangeable or was this intentional?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@dougmcarthur I'd need a timestamp to know for sure, but is it possible that when they said "click" the demo was using the Magic Keyboard?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@dougmcarthur Apple is generally consistent that you “tap” a touchscreen but “click” a trackpad. (But of course MacOS supports “tap to click” in the Trackpad panel in Settings.)

@markgurman calling the M4 iPad Pro:

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@bshanks @markgurman Makes me wonder if the iPad Air will go to M3 next year, or stand pat for 18-24 months and move straight to M4.

When we moved to Ghost earlier this year it seemed like a good time to update our branding. So today we're going to start rolling out a new look for Platformer. Hope you enjoy!

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@crumbler Pretty pretty pretty good.

@gruber I don't know the WaPo reporters on the AI/self-driving car story, but it's pretty clear expertise in technology reporting and editing has crashed with all the buyouts of experienced tech folks (think of a single one left you considered top of their field 5 to 10 years ago), people having left mainstream mags/newspapers for inside work at companies (Apple, Google, Alphabet, etc.), research, or…laid off from the places they went to. I don't think this story would have passed 20 years ago.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf Domain expertise has been replaced by covering every business as a "business”. In print terms, it's like all that's left are the front (national/world), sports, and business sections of the paper.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@marinaepelman @glennf In theory it's possible that iPhone sales could be down 20% but overall revenue only down 8%, but in China, if you know anything about how important the iPhone is for Apple there, you know that doesn't add up. Again, back to expertise.

@timbray Like I wrote in my update, I think one significant problem is that many (most?) typical users assume, wrongly, that if you buy a Brand X mouse you need to install Brand X's Mac software to use it.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@robmathers @timbray Have you tried it with SteerMouse?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@pl @timbray That's a big part of the reason why everyone recommends Brother in recent years.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@MattLeidholm @timbray There's a simple utility to control that too: https://pilotmoon.com/scrollreverser/

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@betalogue @timbray That is indeed news to me. I'll definitely give it a try, but I suspect it still won't make my mouse move as fast I have SteerMouse set to. Back in the 90s, for RSI reasons, I trained myself to use a mouse set so fast I really only ever move my fingers, not my wrist.

Apple Watch Ultra’s Best Feature: Battery Life

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@schmidt I've got cellular on my Series 7, and despite battery health being down to something like 85 percent, battery life is still pretty good. "All day" starting with a full charge, easy. So: way longer than AI Pin.

(Seems like the laser projector is very power hungry.)

@gruber @viticci I enjoyed the latest The Talk Show, and have GOOD NEWS! Apple already made John's keyboard!

BAD NEWS: It's probably not Vision Pro compatible, and will definitely cost more than a Magic Keyboard, if you can even find one.

@gruber on the topic of the long period between Vision Pro editions even if it’s not true it might be very handy to have that message out right now. Why? My guess is that on Tuesday they’ll be announcing a slew of new countries for Vision Pro. Remember it isn’t on sale anywhere yet outside the US. Usually the launch is late in other countries but then you catch up to latest, how many are you going to sell if you think you only have 6 months with a generation 1 product?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@alexandronov Sure, but a nearly three-year gap?

regarding the @gruber and @viticci discussions bout virtualizing the Mac, isn't this similar to what they did with the Xserve? It started as integrated hardware and software and eventually it just became an app then a set of discrete apps?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Mike_Enos @viticci Yes, definitely. Not a bad comparison.

OK, so you know the so-called "source code leak" from Rabbit for the #r1 last week? It wasn't a real leak, but what it showed was different than what I was expecting. So Rabbit Hole, the way you configure your R1 -- it only works on desktops, which I thought was rather odd. And then I went to manage my connection and I figured out why. This whole thing is a fucking VNC session in the web browser served as if it is a modal login

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Just tried connecting Uber to mine, and the text rendering fuzziness is a dead giveaway that something is off. Glad you figured out what they're doing here.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl The VM-through-web is so finicky that it won't even let you type numbers on a keyboard's number-pad. It's like they're only looking for the keycodes from the keys above the alphabetic keys.

@gruber Why do you think Cook feels so much pressure to let investors know AI stuff is coming? I feel like they’ve dealt with similar pressures before without teasing anything?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@jack_regan Because it’s a mania at the moment. And saying “coming soon” spoils nothing.

@gruber @viticci You guys mentioned on Daring Fireball that Vision Pro doesn’t support bluetooth mouse. It actually does! It’s just limited and buried under Accessibility settings: https://www.reddit.com/r/VisionPro/comments/1aq68xs/psa_you_can_use_any_bluetooth_mouse_with_your/

gruber,

Just your casual 2.5-hour conversation about this thing called "iPad" with @gruber and some guy from Italy: https://daringfireball.net/thetalkshow/2024/04/29/ep-399

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@ellenich @viticci That wouldn’t work with the simple (no keyboard) covers. Maybe they could design around that, but I think it’s easier, more obvious, and more convenient to keep it at the “top” and just figure out a way to put the camera and Face ID there too.
