If you've ever needed to deal with legacy XML, and would rather do it with JSON, here's a lightweight solution:

https://github.com/chockenberry/XMLProcessor

The sample SwiftUI app reads an XML feed, grabs some Markdown text for the article, then uses Foundation to convert it into an AttributedString (using both inline and presentation intents).

And if you’re looking for a @daringfireball app with pink accent colors, it's got that, too.

@chockenberry Your semantic mappings here are very clever. And also reminds why I despise XML.

Report on Apple headset says: “Apple expects to sell one day per retail store, and it has told suppliers that it expects sales of seven to 10 million units during the first year of availability.” (Via @gruber thanks!)
That math doesn’t remotely check out:
525 stores x 365 days/yr = 191,625 units/year
Either someone failed math or Apple expects sales to skyrocket after the first few months. To hit 7M units they need to move 36 per store per day every day. (Comparison: 7M Macs sold in 2022.)

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@bratling Surely they will sell most of them online, no?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@bratling And first-year sales will be heavily front-loaded by pre-sales after the announcement. Figure there are a few million people who will just buy one via pre-order immediately. And then there will be a weeks-long backorder list. And then, after that settles down, they get to the "sell one per day in each retail store” time. Something like that.

After listening to @gruber and @jkottke on my morning walk, I’m taking the memory lane and checking out what the current state of Movable Type is. That was early in my internet days, using it. Recommend the episode of The Talk Show, where they’re speaking about 25 years of @kottke. https://daringfireball.net/thetalkshow/2023/03/11/ep-370

@joschuba @jkottke @kottke What is the current state of Movable Type? My installation is effectively locked in place.

I had a nice little chuckle to myself today, opening the Mac App Store to see that the number 1 spot for "Best New Apps and Updates" is a journaling app. If the rumour mill is to be believed, we're just a few months away from Apple potentially sherlocking that entire category. Sure, there's always room for "deluxe" apps in any category, but I do wonder how the devs feel, getting one last boost before the platform itself might crush them. @gruber do you think this was intentional or algorithmic?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@dougmcarthur Those recommendations are editorial choices, not algorithmic. Whether it relates to upcoming iOS 17 features/rumors, I don’t know.

Perfect example of one of the dozen or so reasons why Mastodon is doomed to relative obscurity and Bluesky is going to thrive: petulant nannyism:

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@SasquatcherGeneral @jon Curious: why do they want to leave?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@ichris @jsatk The difference is that the nanny scolds have guided/defined Mastodon culture. On Bluesky they’ll be ignored.

@jtds Don’t hold your breath. Post is DOA IMO. I don’t get it.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Joe I’d say the signup process is the least of Mastodon’s problems.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@troz You don’t think that would be a problem if the App Store had competition?

atomicpoet, to fediversenews
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

This take is annoying.

But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".

How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?

No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.

That story isn't being told.

@MetalSamurai @arinbasu1 (a) You really think privacy policy will any way affect mass market adoption? How in the world do you explain Facebook and Google’s success?

(b) What do you think is wrong with Bluesky’s privacy policy?

gruber, to random
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

Bluesky is going to skyrocket to mainstream popularity and actually replace Twitter, and Mastodon cannot, because Bluesky is being designed to be simple, fun, and — most importantly — easy to understand.
