Perfect example of one of the dozen or so reasons why Mastodon is doomed to relative obscurity and Bluesky is going to thrive: petulant nannyism:

> Perfect example of one of the dozen or so reasons why Mastodon is doomed to relative obscurity

Firstly, congrats, you've just joined an elite club of public predictors of Mastodon's doom. There are examples here going back to 2017:

https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fediparty/wiki/The-fediverse-on-the-web

Secondly, I agree that threatening to defederate an instance for having the misfortune to be haunted by Matt Blaze is petty. But it's just some arsehat's opinion, not representative of Mastodon or the fediverse as a whole.

@gruber So what? Someone makes a silly request on the internet, all hell breaks loose. That’s a regular Tuesday.
As far as I can see, this only served to make the whole story more juicy, since now we can all make silly posts about people making silly posts, which will cause even more silly posts. Which is the extend of real world impact. 🤷‍♂️😃

(This post would be most awkward if the instance was actually defederated by now, but it seems nothing happened. 😳)

esther,

@gruber following that logic, the mass-blocking script I used on Twitter spelled the doom of that platform too. Except that’s not what happened and also doesn’t make any sense

Joe,
@Joe@twit.social avatar

@gruber

  1. This won’t matter to most people since the signup process has changed to make Masrodon.social the default instance
  2. Bluesky claims that they want to be decentralized and federated which would mean that they would have the same problem.
gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Joe I’d say the signup process is the least of Mastodon’s problems.

troz,
@troz@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber If “petulant nannyism” was perceived as a problem, Apple’s App Stores would have shut down long ago.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@troz You don’t think that would be a problem if the App Store had competition?

BenRiceM,
@BenRiceM@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber if Mastodon can work out a way to preserve posts when changing server, then the petulant nannies have very little control of their members disagree with them

darrylxxx,

@gruber isn't this post just an example of 'tone policing' and nannyism?

mikepetrucci,

@gruber any chance for a Bluesky invite?

@gruber signal-to-noise guys, this is noise, is this useful?

rabble,
@rabble@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber this is how I’ve tried to describe it visually. How the fiefdoms of the fediverse is both what makes it work but also very hard to do anything that has a network effect.

@gruber if some random person on some random instance overreacts to some other random person on some other random instance and threatens to defederate... that seems like an interpersonal problem between those people, not a problem with mastodon

also I have no idea why we think similar behavior won't happen on bluesky if and when they actually allow federation, the single feature which is the entire ostensible point of both mastodon and bluesky

david_megginson,
@david_megginson@mstdn.ca avatar

@gruber I can't see anyone threatening to defederate him in the thread h references, but if they were, it would probably be because of this post, not because of his feature suggestion:

https://federate.social/@mattblaze/110312705680151368

Also, obscurity FTW, if it means we can have one tiny corner of the web with civil discourse and prioritising safety over growth.

@jtds Don’t hold your breath. Post is DOA IMO. I don’t get it.

jtds,

@gruber Probably right, but I think the model's a good one insofar as there's an aligned way to pay for trust and safety. Wish some better posters would take up there. @gruber @mattblaze This is an example of why I'm worried the veteran Mastodon community and the Twitter refugee community will never get along. I hope my worry is proven unfounded. ☹️

@gruber without seeing the context, which he conveniently doesnt show, I can’t judge. Is this the guy leo laporte reported for failing to control abusive posts from his domain?

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@gruber Nah. It's safe to just ignore everyone who keeps screaming about how they're going to defederate everybody. In the end they'll have a network consisting of only their own server.

I stopped following the hashtag a long time ago for this reason. A very small amount of instance admins making a lot of noise relevant to noone but themselves.

oliphant,

@troed @gruber It is, however, a great resource for jackasses that like to troll the hashtag that I can block.

caspercdn,
@caspercdn@mstdn.social avatar

@gruber And who runs blue sky?

sentinel1909,

@gruber People are the fundamental problem here. People suck and I’m not sure anyone can solve that, whatever the platform.

Whiskerkenbrook,
@Whiskerkenbrook@freeradical.zone avatar

@gruber so that can’t happen on BlueSky? Good to know.

mcg,
@mcg@social.lol avatar

@gruber As someone that had to unfollow this person due to the constant complaining about everything here, I am not sure he is the best example.

strypey,
@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@mcg You actually had to unfollow him yourself? I could blocked for respectfully disagreeing with the Gospel according to Blaze, so I didn't need to bother.

@gruber

jeff, (edited )

@mcg @gruber Unfollowing him is a perfectly reasonable response.

As is muting. Or even blocking, maybe.

Threatening to defederate his entire instance, however, is completely unhinged.

I don’t share @gruber’s prediction (I think this is a unique case and one that in theory BS will be susceptible to as well, in time), but the problem here isn’t with Blaze at all — and it’s a good example of the overly-ideological weirdos who hold too much sway here.

jeff,

@mcg @gruber Why I’m more optimistic than @gruber is not only because Bluesky will have this stuff happen as well (once/if it actually federates), but because with each passing day more “normies” show up on Mastodon, and the unhinged types will eventually be diluted.

There will always be these sorts of people, but if we play our cards right they will self-isolate and the rest of us can go along our way.

mcg,
@mcg@social.lol avatar

@jeff If only that person would have also taken this advice. Mute/Block and move on. Instead, constantly complaining about things.

nmc,

@gruber Precisely the fact that Mastodon is decentralized should make it more robust against these behaviors. You have the option to choose the instance with the moderation guidelines that you prefer.

otolithe,

@gruber but isn’t Bluesky also supposed to be decentralized? So what will make it different from Mastodon in this particular aspect? Real question, not passive-aggressive or anything. Actually curious.
