TurboTax needs a whole expense category for how much hair services cost me before giving 1099 talks….

Edit: yea I know there isn’t one, but it’s totally a shitty pink tax. It’s hundreds of dollars a year.

hackyspice,

@hacks4pancakes @kboyd Meaning people who do photo shoots and play a part on a stage?

    @SecurityWriter I knew a guy who used to reformat drive and reinstall his OS every few weeks, just to keep it fresh and snappy. It's the ultimate turn-it-off-and-on-again card.

    @AbandonedAmerica My brain is really struggling with the lit surfaces in that one. It would be cool to do a VR sphere in there.

    Thanks for venturing in there! Watch your step, and hope your tetanus boosters are up to date.

    @cmdln There should have been sarcastic but sincere thanks for their participation and including public input on such important topics, that public input is so needed and must be incorporated into decision making for impartiality sake - or else the foxes really do run the hen house. We don't want that do we?

    I'd be interested in a longer writeup of this occurrence.

    I don't know who wants to hear, but please test your backup. Restore files. How much time did it take? Did you succeed in getting back your data? You are welcome 🤗

    hackyspice,

    @nixCraft Also, are you backing up the right files? Like are these the files you need to get back up and running?

    I've been there on "File restores successful but services not operational" day.

    Polling y'all IT and security people for my own amusement and frustration -

    The very worst tech sales pitch you got this week:

    hackyspice,

    @simplenomad @hacks4pancakes If this is your way of telling the vendor, "Nice try buddy" then you can rest assured that they are still reading your posts to see if you mention them and are cringing at you discussing their technique, instead of the service itself.

    @lcamtuf Paying $2000 per month, just in case you need help paying for medical care. Scam.

    Is there a german word for the feeling of spending your young years expecting to be different, knowing you are different, then in your 40s you realize you don't travel anymore, you have a house in the suburbs, kids, 2 cars, and have opinions on lawn care and energy savings?

    I need that word today.

    hackyspice,

    @mwbbrown According to a rough survey of Corvette owners by me, you need to be at least in your 60s to own one.

    @lcamtuf My 6-year old and I are in a cold war debate about what sad trombone is.

    He's on your side, with 4 notes. My side is only two notes, like this maybe?

    static const struct chip_note snd_game_over[] = {
    { 200, 300 }, { 0, 200 }, { 140, 900 }, { 0, 0 }
    };

    Seems like I am wrong here, but what is the two-note version called?

    laren, to amateurradio

    There's no secret to the statement that I tend to get "shiny thing" syndrome something fierce. Cool shit catches my eye. Go figure.

    But, I'm trying to keep my eyes on what I want to do - which is, learn CW.

    To wit, a third competitor in the "next equipment purchase" category has appeared:

    • XPA125B amp for my X6100. 100 watts with the existing radio

    • FT-891 Radio, plus digirig and the power pole mod. Probably fans, too; apparently the 891 gets a little toasty in digital work.

    • TR-35 CW QRP radio - because I'm working on CW, and while the X6100 does do CW, I suspect encouraging myself to use it by way of a radio that does only it wouldn't be a bad idea.

    The first two are largely in my pursuit of digital modes with a side order of phone and cw. The last is CW only, and maybe me using my own shiny thing syndrome against myself to actually use it. I'd probably get myself a sparkplug EFHW to run it from, too; combine with a 3aH bioenno and take my rather sizable load out for mobile ops and boil it down to something popped into a small box.

    hackyspice,

    @laren @jerry I did not know what CW was. Defined here for my fellow ignorant friends.

    Continuous Wave, a method of transmitting Morse code.

    Seems scientific, boss: "ideas bubble up more organically in the clamor of the office." https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/20/business/return-to-office-remote-work.html

    hackyspice,

    @seldo @ranimolla You can absolutely interrupt people on zoom.

    Some people regularly continue to talk until they are interrupted because they are not great at ending their though or are not comfortable with the pause after asking for audience input.

    When you notice their speaking content quality declining (repetition, speaking more slowly, unlikely hypotheticals, tangents, rabbit holes), I have found that speakers may even be grateful for someone jumping in, showing interest, and keeping the conversation centered and moving forward.

    Interruptions need to be rare and nuanced but can be done in non-rude ways.

    hackyspice,

    @seldo @ranimolla Agreed.

    Sometimes we all see the speaker struggling, and it is awkward hoping the resolution just arrives naturally. Sometimes it just doesn't.
