Does anyone have any advice at #dogsofmastodon for helping my traumatised dog enjoy his walks more? Two years ago he was attacked by two escaped off-lead Rottweilers when we were out walking. It was terrifying. Now he barks at any dog, any size or breed.

We have tried dog school to desensitise him. Vet gave him anxiety tabs. Vet told us to take him down streets where he's unlikely to meet other dogs (ugly places with no trees or happy smells). We just want him to enjoy being outdoors again.

@CStamp Sorry I missed this - Charlie is doing okay but still gets afraid of walks and refuses them sometimes. @Godfrey642 I'm sorry your dog was attacked, I know how scary and awful that is. Not sure what helps to heal dogs psychologically except hopefully time and love

@AbandonedAmerica - Dude, your piece about Gary, Indiana on Atlas Obscura is phenomenal. Growing up outside Chicago, Gary was just a syncopated song and a smell when the wind came in hard from the east. I loved learning more about its history and decline.

The newest of my Decay Theory articles just went live on Atlas Obscura! In it, we explore the struggling town of Gary, Indiana to determine how a once-thriving city winds up with over 7,000 abandoned buildings. It's an important story, not just for Gary residents, but for many American towns facing similar issues.

@MargaretD I don't disagree, and I think that immigrant populations are an integral and important part of the core identity of America. However, without some sort of economic base created by jobs I'm not sure how added people wouldn't wind up impoverished as well.

@antipode77 Correct. That, paired with the fact that when your wealthiest people decide to move to the suburbs and withdraw all money and business from the downtown, the outcome here is an unfortunate inevitability

Jeff Mattox (1958-2024) โ€” Owner of the Mahoning Drive-In Theater

He saved the historic Pennsylvania drive-in by turning it into a "living museum," w/ 35mm screenings every wknd from April-Halloween.

I've been there and it's a delight, like time travel to the '50s.
