Warum featured der jetzt in seinem Radio-Programm Einblick? Ich glaube, ich bin im falschen Film.

hennichodernich,

So I finally caved and decided to get a Glasgow. But of course I build it myself, as I don't want to miss the fun of reflow BGA soldering.
If Mouser had finished picking my order in time I couldn't have started this weekend, but unfortunately FedEx doesn't deliver on Saturdays.

hennichodernich,

Lets see how HASL performs in reflow soldering. It is known for causing problems with QFNs with exposed pads, but the BGA should come out ok.
I will brush up the QFNs' pads with the iron afterwards anyway.

hennichodernich,

@timonsku At work we had an issue with a QFN16, where only 1 of 3 prototype boards worked. But I guess the reason was too much paste on the exposed pad, so it lifted the package.

Funny how this restaurant’s decorative pattern reminds me of Tetris and — oh Good Lord.

The same pattern cropped differently absolutely looks like a Svastika

@santiago But it's a counter-clockwise one.

Benchtop organizational idea - has anyone done this before?

Little 3D printed plastic feet with a threaded hex standoff press-fit into it. Attach the foot to your bench with command strips or double sided tape, then screw DUT into it.

When you need to move the board to solder to it etc, just remove the screws, lift it off, then put it back in when you're done.

Board is held firmly in place without needing to tape it down by the corners like I do now.

Good idea? Bad? Any practical experience?

Probably gonna try and throw something together in solvespace this afternoon and get a local friend to print it for me.

hennichodernich,

@azonenberg At work we use bakelite board with holes drilled into it.

Anyone have tricks for nondestructive unmating of Molex PicoBlade connectors? I can't get them to release without a ton of force and/or poking with a small screwdriver. And doing that has broken two (thankfully both cable side) so far.

Am I missing something obvious technique wise, or a retention mechanism? As far as I can tell they're just friction fit.

Parts for the BaseT1 passive tap came in! There's a few more SMAs and some pin headers (nothing super exciting) and a lot of parts for other future projects.

But this one is a bit more interesting, let's have a look! Mini-Circuits ADCB-20-82+ dual directional coupler. 1-800 MHz, 20 dB IL.

Since it's a dual directional coupler it gives you taps in both the forward and reverse direction. I may respin my BaseT passive tap around this as well, since it's so much smaller than the one I used there.

From the top at low mag, not a whole lot to see. Just a white box with some markings.

hennichodernich,

@azonenberg the connectors have been standardized by the IEC, but the industry calls the protocol "Single Pair Ethernet" (SPE), maybe that's why you haven't found them. https://www.harting.com/DE/de/single-pair-ethernet

100/1000baseT1 to baseT media converter schematic done and review complete (although if anyone else wants to have a look, the sch is at https://www.antikernel.net/temp/baset1-media-converter.pdf).

181 components, pretty small compared to most of my recent designs that are pushing well above 500.

Starting layout now, should be pretty straightforward.

hennichodernich,

@azonenberg I didn't know you can just cross connect 2 PHY chips to get a media converter. Is there no runtime parametrization needed?

hennichodernich,

@azonenberg Ok, it seems I missed the STM32 in the schematic. 😳

Making good progress on the UHD bridge to ngscopeclient.

Control plane SCPI commands are defined and the GUI is all hooked up and can reconfigure the SDR.

Only thing left is to implement waveform streaming which shouldn't take long as I already have streaming to file working.

hennichodernich,

@funkylab @azonenberg it's also featured in Kammeyer's book, however, in German, so I didn't want to quote that here.
