Late night thought:

Coffee people who trash siphon coffee don't know how to brew with a siphon coffee maker.

Siphon coffee is very much an art, but it is also every bit as consistent as pour over is, if you nail down your "recipe" and follow it religiously. To do so, you have to be just as practiced and attentive as any demanding brewing method.

Those who trash it just don't get it. And probably aren't worth listening to on the subject. 😎

@coffeegeek @coffee I've tried very hard for a very long time to "get it" and "do it right", and it still tastes like shit so either you're being incredibly condescending and i'm a failure, or your wrong… right?

OR absolutely no one has actually written a good "user guide" on doing-it-well and/or you've chosen to not reference it for some reason?

I wanna hear about the best concerts you’ve been to! Some of mine:

  • Ozomatli at The Catalyst - played until curfew, spilled out onto the street and jammed for another hour until the cops came
  • Flaming Lips at Liberty Hall - second set, played the entirety of Dark Side
  • Dar Williams at Liberty - power went out, she sat on the edge of the stage and played three songs by flashlight
  • Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlisle, et al at the Gorge - simply magical

@jacob The Presidents of the United States of America, a few years ago… they played all their newer stuff and many classics, for what was by all means a full concert performance, with amazing energy.

Felt like there might be an encore or two, but then they came back out and straight-up played through the the entire original self-titled album with passion, not skipping a beat.

… and this is like in the shittiest, most isolated capital city on the planet.

@jacob but also a shout-out to Ghostface Killah, who upon coming to Perth and discovering a local back-alley toasted sandwich shop had named themselves Toastface Grillah proceeded to do a free impromptu performance in said back alley.

@glyph it's a first-line go-to for me for Python shells spawned from pdb

(so less likely to make it to a commit than even a breakpoint() statement, but for developing a module without restarting the whole process, idk how people live without it!)

my Google search for the day is:

'how stop VSCode generating commit messages for me via "AI" without my consent'

this is the fucking worst

and there's so much paranoia around here re how much private, protected data gets unwillingly shared with them, but they just keep SNEAKING IN new ways

Anyone else just... not particularly moved by travel? I don't necessarily dislike travel, but keeping a garden and a library is my preference 99% of the time. I find most travel stressful and disruptive, and I mostly do it to support books or see family.

hipikat,
@hipikat@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith i'm not interested by travel, but it's because i've seen all these "other places" on screens, and they all just look like CRAP, compared to the Karri country on my doorstep

VERY mixed feelings about the Netflix 3 Body Problem

they literally tore through the first 15-20 hours of plot and character development well before the first episode was done, and re-wrote SO much

and added such an inappropriate comedic edge

but ultimately it serves as a perfect example of what "Netflixification" looks like

(my god, Apple would have given it SO much more of the gravitas it deserves. (for the first two seasons, before getting lazy.)

A thing you’ll see on Mastodon is this kind of gut assumption that wide-open computing and platform strategies are inherently virtuous.

And that competing approaches with more proprietary or corporate-controlled mechanics are inherently evil and poisonous.

Another thing you’ll see on Mastodon is waves and waves of spam, as a wide-open community commons finds its social and infrastructure fabric torn apart by bad actors.

@danilo this suggest private corporations are the gardeners in their own yards and not the parasites??

ngl, seeing everybody celebrate 40 years of the Mac makes my heart hurt once again for the Amiga which was superior in every single way but, alas, Commodore.

I still get shivers thinking of the A3000T and what an amazing computer it was.

@hynek thank you, that's exactly what i needed to read and agree with and nod to and feel old and defeated at today

My answer to the baby/parachute problem:

I pull my ripcord and let the baby die.

Its god—if they exist—will know their own, so baby goes to heaven ("Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius").

If god doesn't exist—baby's trying to blackmail me, so fuck you, baby.

That's the same reply I'd give an adult evangelist who pulled this stunt: they chose to die on that hill, I didn't impose a choice on them. I admit I may be flying my ASD freak flag here.

(EDIT: It's an abortion alegory.)

Uh oh they did it again 🤨 : Three years after Juukan Gorge disaster, Rio Tinto blast damages [ANOTHER] ancient rock with Indigenous significance

"The site is believed to date back at least 50,000 years."

@kcarruthers good news, everybody! yesterday, "representatives of the Muntulgura Guruma people and Rio Tinto visited the site together... found no structural damage to the rock shelter or cultural materials”.

@hynek you make it sound like it’s SO easy for a tick to reject its host; there’s often SO much investment in a framework…
