I wanna hear about the best concerts you’ve been to! Some of mine:

  • Ozomatli at The Catalyst - played until curfew, spilled out onto the street and jammed for another hour until the cops came
  • Flaming Lips at Liberty Hall - second set, played the entirety of Dark Side
  • Dar Williams at Liberty - power went out, she sat on the edge of the stage and played three songs by flashlight
  • Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlisle, et al at the Gorge - simply magical

  • Camper Van Beethoven at the Speedway Cafe in SLC, 1987. The whole show sandwiched inside a version of Interstellar Overdrive.
  • Hot Rize/Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers, The Blasters, Queen Ida, Eek-a-Mouse, Throwing Muses at a U of Utah music festival, 1988.
  • Sleater-Kinney and Pearl Jam at the Pepsi Center in Denver, 2003.
  • King Gizzard at Red Rocks, 2022. Their first show there, they were pumped.
  • Yo La Tengo at Washington's here in Fort Collins, 2024.

The Black Dahlia Murder: saw them headline at a small local music festival. The venue was a roller rink. The crowd revolted during the first song of TBDM, and pinned the security guards against the front of the stage. All security left the venue. Everyone in the crowd stage dived.

adrian,
@adrian@holovaty.com avatar

@jacob Local band The Hardaways, performing the entire Abbey Road album at the Replay Lounge in Lawrence, KS, circa 2003. Tiny venue, maybe 100 people packed in like sardines, all singing every word together. Cops came to break it up just as they finished “Her Majesty”

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@adrian oh man that must have been amazing

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@jacob Let’s see…

  • Pink Floyd, Denver, Division Bell tour
  • The Cure, Denver, Wild Mood Swings tour
  • U2, Las Vegas residency at The Sphere
  • Wolfstone, a middle school gym in my home town, sometime in the early 1990s
  • David Bowie, Cleveland, Reality tour
  • Rush, Cleveland, 2011; the show that was recorded for the Time Machine concert video
  • VNV Nation, the tiny stage at The Agora in Cleveland, for the Automatic Empires tour; Ronan high-fived me during my favorite song
mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@jacob More:

  • VNV Nation, House of Blues Cleveland, Electric Sun tour; Ronan gave my daughter a drum stick at the end of the show
  • Cleveland Orchestra, “Bugs Bunny on Broadway” — Live score performance of Looney Tunes stuff, timing has to be PERFECT to match the animation!
  • Cleveland Orchestra, Lord of the Rings Symphony, conducted by Howard Shore
  • Cleveland Orchestra conducted by John Williams
  • The Art of Noise, Chicago, one of 6 dates for mini The Seduction of Claude Debussy tour
mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@jacob I would also tell you that if you ever get the chance to see Weird Al, do it. His shows are brilliantly fun, and he’s got one of the most versatile bands on the planet.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@mpirnat indeed he's really high on my list of "never seen but want to”

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@mpirnat I saw the SF Symphony doing a similar Looney Tunes thing and yeah, so much fun. Highlight was "What's Opera Doc?" with singers from the SF Opera.

joshourisman,
@joshourisman@hachyderm.io avatar

@jacob Willie Nelson at the 9:30 Club in DC, has got to be my top. This was a couple years ago, so he’s old, and his son Lucas is jumping in and out as he needs to take a break, and that just somehow made his talent even more impressive.

Number two is probably Tom Petty at the Boston Gardens. It was one of his last shows (though we obviously didn’t know that at the time), and it was really the epitome of a modernized stadium rock show.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@joshourisman I’ve never seen Willie! I’m gonna try to see him at the Gorge this summer but it might not work out

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@jacob I saw Tom Waits’ set at the Bridge School benefit and he hasn’t played again since.

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@jacob also saw The National in Santa Barbara, followed them up to Berkeley and managed to meet Matt briefly backstage.

dabeaz,
@dabeaz@mastodon.social avatar

@jacob I sat about 6 feet away from Chick Corea at Space in Evanston. That was amazing.

Envious of your Ozomatli gig. I bet that was nuts.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@dabeaz ahh amazing! I missed out on seeing him on tour with Bela Fleck, still kicking myself for missing it

Ozzfest '99 - I was a junior in high school and it was my first concert. Something I'll always remember.

Tool - Managed to get tickets 10 minutes after they went on sale. They were a bucket list band to see. Just an amazing show and experience.

@jacob Paradiso in Amsterdam has been host of so many good ones! George Clinton and P-Funk (multiple times), Madness, Maceo Parker with Candy Dulfer as (not-very) surprise guest.

Hans Dulfer playing at a public event in Amstelveen with his extremely funk band, with his daughter Candy showing up at random because she'd been out grocery shopping, and taking her dad's sax and just improvising a smashing performance.

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@jacob Suzanne Vega in Paradiso several times with just a bassist, where one time she took requests, someone shouted "Left of Center" (which is originally a very orchestral song) and she told the story of how the first time she played it as a duo was because of a request in Paradiso, they weren't sure if it was going to work and now they play it all over the world that way, and the guy who shouted the request shouts "yeah, that was me!" 😂

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@jacob Sting in Berlln with the Royal Philharmonic and Branford Marsalis (also a recorded DVD and CD) where we (a few fan club members) got to see rehearsals. They practiced the bit where Branford comes on while playing the long opening note of Englishman in New York a few times, just to get timing right. The orchestra played exactly the same each time, the rest of the band was similar but more loose, and Branford's sax was completely different but just so fantastic each time.

mathowie,
@mathowie@xoxo.zone avatar

@jacob friends all have Ozomatli playing in the lobby after a show then in the street then the cops showed up stories, I’m so bummed I’ve never gotten to see them play live

geonz,
@geonz@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@jacob John Prine w/ Leon Redbone opening....
.... oh, but no. Kate Wolf with Mike Auldridge sitting in on the dobro.

@jacob The Presidents of the United States of America, a few years ago… they played all their newer stuff and many classics, for what was by all means a full concert performance, with amazing energy.

Felt like there might be an encore or two, but then they came back out and straight-up played through the the entire original self-titled album with passion, not skipping a beat.

… and this is like in the shittiest, most isolated capital city on the planet.

hipikat,
@hipikat@mastodon.social avatar

@jacob but also a shout-out to Ghostface Killah, who upon coming to Perth and discovering a local back-alley toasted sandwich shop had named themselves Toastface Grillah proceeded to do a free impromptu performance in said back alley.

@greg ha I don’t think I knew your taste in music until now but - yeah this tracks :)

greg,
@greg@gregnewman.io avatar

@jacob ha. Not sure if that’s good or bad.

With the exception of the last two all of those were 25+ years ago.

I had tickets to see Sting but ended up not going and now kick myself. These days I gravitate towards classical and jazz.

selviano,
@selviano@mastodon.online avatar

@jacob it wasn’t one of the best concerts I’ve been to, but your Herbie Hancock experience reminds me of the time I saw Wesley Willis at the Porter dining hall at ucsc. Must’ve been ‘01
