California legislators have passed a water-saving bill aimed at removing grass that's purely decorative along roads and outside businesses. In Southern California, this sort of grass is estimated to cover up to 51,000 acres — an area 12 times the size of Griffith Park. https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2023-09-13/california-legislators-target-nonfunctional-grass

For years, environmentalists urged the government to drain Lake Powell and decommission Glen Canyon Dam. Their proposal, called the "One-Dam Solution" or "Fill Mead First," is now receiving support from some new allies: influential farmers in the Imperial Valley. https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2023-09-05/california-farmers-urge-one-dam-solution-for-colorado-river

Southern California’s ‘water doctor’ pushes for transformation to adapt to climate change

I spoke with Adel Hagekhalil about the changes he envisions leading the Metropolitan Water District, which supplies drinking water for 19 million people. He says Southern California needs a "fourth aqueduct" — as he puts it, a new "Mulholland moment." https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2023-08-23/southern-california-metropolitan-water-chief-climate-change

In today’s Boiling Point newsletter, I wrote about Tropical Storm Hilary — and what the storm shows about worsening risks of extreme deluges with climate change. Lots of great reporting from my L.A. Times colleagues and others: https://www.latimes.com/environment/newsletter/2023-08-22/boiling-point-storm-shows-climate-risk-boiling-point

'A continuation of racism and discrimination': California tribes and environmental groups argue state officials are violating civil rights by mismanaging water in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. The EPA is opening an investigation. https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2023-08-11/epa-probes-racism-complaints-against-california-water-board

A California tribe has signed agreements with state and federal agencies to work together on efforts to return endangered Chinook salmon to their traditional spawning areas upstream of Shasta Dam. The deal could advance the tribe's longstanding goal of reintroducing fish that were transplanted from California to New Zealand more than a century ago and have thrived in mountain streams there. https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2023-05-04/tribe-california-salmon-agreement @latimes

The only thing keeping the rising lake from inundating homes, businesses and the prison in Corcoran is the 14.5-mile-long dirt levee. Local officials want to see the levee reinforced and raised by 3.5 feet. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-04-24/floodwaters-threaten-to-drown-a-california-city-and-prison @latimes

Over the past year, Mina Guli has run marathons in 32 countries from Australia to Zambia. She ran through cities and farmlands in California, and along the shores of depleted reservoirs. All of her runs have had a guiding purpose: to call attention to water issues. "I want to show that we are capable of doing the hard things that are necessary for us to be able to achieve this change, whether it’s running 200 marathons or solving the global water crisis." https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2023-04-22/running-cycling-water @latimes
