idiomaddict,

Nobody answered you, but there was a conflict with reddit and Star Trek mods several years ago and so a large group of fans came here much before last June. They’re just better established than other groups.

idiomaddict,

The bit about worker’s compensation is in the article.

idiomaddict,

Asset-Limited, income-constrained and employed, fyi

*braces for down votes and possible ban* (pawb.social)

I’ve been seeing a worrying number of these people on Lemmy lately, sharing enlightened takes including but not limited to “voting for Biden is tantamount to fascism” and “the concept of an assigned gender, or even an assigned name, at birth is transphobic” and none of them seem to be interested in reading more than...

idiomaddict,

The second comment has been removed, but the first one seems fair to me (I hope you won’t dismiss this out of hand as an authoritarian leftist, I’m not authoritarian at all). Trans people don’t choose to be trans, so calling them sinful just to endear yourself to a church member doesn’t seem materially different from saying to a regressive Mormon that, sure, black people bear the mark of Cain.

It just labels a vulnerable group as inherently problematic. It’s not authoritarian to be surprised or upset by that.

idiomaddict,

You have your reasons, but that doesn’t make this a less surprising or upsetting thing for people. Even if it did, you didn’t provide that context in the post, so people will respond without context (edit: and that’s also been removed for me). That doesn’t make them authoritarian, just people who have different values from you.

What about it do you see as authoritarian?

idiomaddict,

The first reference in that article is to a behavior. It’s not IS’s fault that there are a lot of articles denigrating people with NPD for displaying that behavior. The behavior itself is an issue, whether or not the person doing it has NPD. A job interview is an example of flattery and manipulation, and that’s why nobody expects them to be an absolutely accurate view of a person.

The second reference is a language issue and it’s a valid point. “Narcissistic” is a loaded term, in that it’s both a diagnostic descriptor and a colloquial term, and it’s easy to simply substitute it with egotistical or self-obsessed, which don’t have additional medical definitions. This is the absolute first time this has come across my radar, though, so I wouldn’t be hugely surprised if it’s also not on IS’s radar- the author of that piece ascribes it to hate, but that seems like a real stretch.

I watched the video, and then visited the sources. This seems like a good candidate for the psychology of the video, but frankly, there are a lot of sources that all describe the methods of alt-right actors online. It would be great if it was better sourced, but it’s a quick video that doesn’t cover too much new ground.

The title of the article is also misleading- the author notes a poorly cited video and two microaggressions against people with NPD, but those aren’t reactionary things imo.

idiomaddict,

Omnivores in western countries tend to eat too little fiber and have their own nutrition deficits.

I’m not even arguing whether a vegan diet is healthier or not, but omnivores shouldn’t assume they’re on easy mode for micronutrients. Everyone should get their blood regularly tested, because waiting for the effects of a vitamin or mineral deficiency to become obvious is not only super unpleasant, but makes the treatment take longer.

idiomaddict,

Or a conspicuous and intentional habit (I guess that’s psychological, but it’s not a technical term) like a fake accent/limp.

idiomaddict,

When I first moved to Germany, I was surprised by the amount of leftists that seemed to support the Royal Air Force, lol

idiomaddict,

Technically, yes. They were really for the Red Army Faction though.

idiomaddict,

I envy your salt tolerance

idiomaddict,

I discovered vegan maultaschen (dumplings, basically), which have the exact proportion of macronutrients and fiber that I need in my diet at large, and which can be eaten raw, fried, or in broth. They also cost €2.25 for /~600 calories worth, so very cheap for prepared food, but not really that cheap in the end.

It’s the perfect food.

idiomaddict,

They’re German, so the easiest would be a German grocery store, but I found a version with seitan or one with more classic ingredients if you can cook.

It’s a lot of work, but it’s also something that you can make 200 of in a day with a large group of people and all take some home for many meals worth

idiomaddict,

The username alone suggests it

idiomaddict,

I think I’m misinterpreting this comment, can you explain it?

idiomaddict,

I wonder what happens if they discover people who have been granted asylum on the basis of bribes. I hope they don’t deport them automatically.

Also, I always forget that this is how the UK refers to members of the non-ruling party

Shadow Immigration Minister Stephen Kinnock

idiomaddict,

If it helps, I worked in restaurants for eight years and at least every other year, someone would forget how thermal shock works and put a hot glass directly into the ice maker, so we’d clean it thoroughly then.

So you know, not oversight or intention, but stupidity leads to sporadic cleaning.

I don’t take ice in restaurants either

idiomaddict,

I’ve worked for some garbo places, but all of them shut the ice machine down immediately for super thorough and annoying cleaning. Ice and glass are too hard to tell apart and the dangers of ice in a drink are too high for even the greediest managers I’ve had to want to chance it.

Someone out there might risk it, but it’s a pretty obvious thing to avoid

idiomaddict,

Especially weird considering that Christmas has been set to December for a long time, so 98% of year 1 AD was actually before the ostensible birth of Christ (I know that scholars now think he was born in April or something, but they probably didn’t always)

idiomaddict,

Well that’s because she can’t/won’t admit what the real issue is.

idiomaddict,

Yeah, tbh I’d see if you can get a different union to represent you, but it doesn’t look like there’s one union specifically for grad students. (I’m assuming you’re in the US, if UAW was an option)

idiomaddict,

Yeah, that’s a shitty situation all around. Just from what you’ve said, I blame the UAW about as much as the international students- it’d be great if the solidarity was there, but it’s natural that their priorities are elsewhere. The school is the real problem, but I definitely get how it’s hard to think so fondly of UAW after that experience.

idiomaddict,

Your question is unpleasant. Why would a person want to engage with it?
