I think we would all be safer if we recognized individual competence and attention as the key ingredient in safety, and stopped trying to replace human attention with an ever-expanding set of sensors and woefully inadequate algorithms for determining whether the driver is being safe.
Like, if they have to model the driver as someone who’s not paying attention, then the whole design philosophy of the car is fucked, and we’re designing for failure.
Each individual is facing the following choice in life:
sacrifice to save the planet, and fail
or not
People want to immediately jump to “if everyone would just …”
Nobody is looking at an “everyone does X” button. People only have their “I do X” button available.
So that is literally the answer to your question. Very few people would sacrifice the civilization to eat a cheeseburger. But nobody has that choice or that power in their hands. Their choice is eat the cheeseburger or not, and the survival of civilization stays rigidly the same between those two choices.
Those of us who play video games do at least. All the AI difficulty settings are arbitrary. You give the bot the ability to use its full capability, and the game is unplayable.
I hate ads on the outside of windows. And they give the little pinholes, like that’s supposed to be enough. The world becomes a blur. Out the window is the least anxious place to look on public transport, but they put ads all over the windows, and give us this pinhole grid crap like it makes up for it.
Mine is 667. I have never used credit cards, and I don’t have any debt. My partner, whose FICO score is 780, currently has about twice their annual salary in debt.
If a person can readily describe their failings it could seem like a red flag because they have failings, but everyone has failings and being aware of them is a positive.
I know what the word means, but I’m unsure how to use it in a sentence. In my native language, Danish,“backorder” translates to “Restordre” and when something is unavailable, we say it’s"i Restordre",which translates directly into English as “in backorder”, but I’m not sure that’s correct English. Do English...
Fuck yes. As a libertarian it bothers me that I can’t make my home in any space I can own.
I understand not building rendering plants next to houses. Some zoning is okay. But there is zero reason why I shouldn’t be able to run a 7-Eleven and sleep on a cot in the back if I so choose.

It’s called corruption and yes every institution eventually becomes corrupt.
The trick isn’t to give up, but to constantly renew the institutions by being present and alive and talking openly about what’s wrong, how to make it better, etc.
And definitely not praising the people who just went through a music festival with guns and indiscriminately killed people and dragged off other ones.
A woman whose husband is missing was being interviewed. She said that whenever her baby would cry in their hiding place, bullets would fly through the wall of the shed where they were hiding.
Why anyone would have praise for that organization I cannot fathom.
The reason I say “no offense” is to indicate to you that my intention is something other than offending you.
For example “no offense but your breath stinks. We should stop and get some mouthwash before we get to the party”
I’m not saying that to make a person feel bad, though they will likely feel bad after I say it. I’m saying it to help them.
I’m autistic, man. If the autistic kid can figure this stuff out so can you. No offense, but maybe you should consider things you don’t understand more deeply before tossing them in the waste bin.
