intensely_human,

I think we would all be safer if we recognized individual competence and attention as the key ingredient in safety, and stopped trying to replace human attention with an ever-expanding set of sensors and woefully inadequate algorithms for determining whether the driver is being safe.

Like, if they have to model the driver as someone who’s not paying attention, then the whole design philosophy of the car is fucked, and we’re designing for failure.

intensely_human,

Each individual is facing the following choice in life:

  • sacrifice to save the planet, and fail
  • or not

People want to immediately jump to “if everyone would just …”

Nobody is looking at an “everyone does X” button. People only have their “I do X” button available.

So that is literally the answer to your question. Very few people would sacrifice the civilization to eat a cheeseburger. But nobody has that choice or that power in their hands. Their choice is eat the cheeseburger or not, and the survival of civilization stays rigidly the same between those two choices.

intensely_human,

We all know which aircraft won the fight.

Those of us who play video games do at least. All the AI difficulty settings are arbitrary. You give the bot the ability to use its full capability, and the game is unplayable.

intensely_human,

To be the ideal day off, it needs at least one more day off before and after it.

intensely_human,

That’s the 40 year reputation he’s worked so hard to build: oversweet tomato purée with no nutrition facts published.

This is such horseshit.

Don’t know if others reas the article but they made her stand in a cell with water on the floor, for at least twelve hours.

That’s like Abu Ghraib level indignity and prisoner abuse. Over some lost tomato purée contracts.

This should be a civil matter, but it’s being treated as a criminal matter.

Fuck this guy, and fuck the corrupt government he’s using to torment this lady.

intensely_human,

I hate ads on the outside of windows. And they give the little pinholes, like that’s supposed to be enough. The world becomes a blur. Out the window is the least anxious place to look on public transport, but they put ads all over the windows, and give us this pinhole grid crap like it makes up for it.

intensely_human,

A few follow-up questions:

  • What’s your home address?
  • How long have you lived there?
  • What’s the make and model of your first car?
  • What’s your social security number?
  • What’s your net annual income?
intensely_human,

We carve our living out of an uncaring and hostile universe.

Earning a living means doing your share of that.

intensely_human,

This is the most classic case of “safety feature makes people unsafe” I’ve ever seen.

This kind of thing didn’t happen before auto save, because everyone knew to save.

intensely_human,

This actually came up recently. Was playing Battlefield and saw all my teammates jump off the bridge we were on, so I just jumped off with them.

As I parachuted down I saw the helicopter crashing where we’d just been standing. It made me laugh realizing I’d just lived out that little saying.

intensely_human,

It’s just a small thing. The escalators don’t run continuously. They start running as you approach them.

intensely_human,

RISUG is cheap, permanent, safe, reversible male birth control.

It was invented in 1979, and has not yet come to market.

intensely_human,

Oh good. Tiktok destroyed its own contract validity with that one. This means it’s vulnerable.

intensely_human,

If a person can readily describe their failings it could seem like a red flag because they have failings, but everyone has failings and being aware of them is a positive.

what is the correct way to use the word "backorder" in English?

I know what the word means, but I’m unsure how to use it in a sentence. In my native language, Danish,“backorder” translates to “Restordre” and when something is unavailable, we say it’s"i Restordre",which translates directly into English as “in backorder”, but I’m not sure that’s correct English. Do English...

intensely_human,

“on backorder”.

“Backorder” is an operational status, so it’s like saying “on fire”, “on duty”, “on order”, or “on patrol”.

intensely_human,

Maybe stop traveling at relativistic speeds?

intensely_human,

Fuck yes. As a libertarian it bothers me that I can’t make my home in any space I can own.

I understand not building rendering plants next to houses. Some zoning is okay. But there is zero reason why I shouldn’t be able to run a 7-Eleven and sleep on a cot in the back if I so choose.

Will human societies always enshittify themselves?

It seems society always goes down the shitter over and over following the same path. People rise to wealth and power extracted on the repression of the masses, massive disparity, ignorance exemplified, xenophobia and blaming minorities for any possible issue, laws signed with golden pens but becoming more meaningless when...

intensely_human,

It’s called corruption and yes every institution eventually becomes corrupt.

The trick isn’t to give up, but to constantly renew the institutions by being present and alive and talking openly about what’s wrong, how to make it better, etc.

intensely_human,

And definitely not praising the people who just went through a music festival with guns and indiscriminately killed people and dragged off other ones.

A woman whose husband is missing was being interviewed. She said that whenever her baby would cry in their hiding place, bullets would fly through the wall of the shed where they were hiding.

Why anyone would have praise for that organization I cannot fathom.

intensely_human,

And they’re going for coal in some places because the political situation has made other reliable energy sources unavailable:

  • the Russia-Ukraine war has destroyed natural gas supply lines to Europe
  • anti-nuclear activism has resulted in lack of nuclear investment

Outside of coal, nuclear, and natural gas, there aren’t many options for reliable sources of electricity.

intensely_human,

The reason I say “no offense” is to indicate to you that my intention is something other than offending you.

For example “no offense but your breath stinks. We should stop and get some mouthwash before we get to the party”

I’m not saying that to make a person feel bad, though they will likely feel bad after I say it. I’m saying it to help them.

I’m autistic, man. If the autistic kid can figure this stuff out so can you. No offense, but maybe you should consider things you don’t understand more deeply before tossing them in the waste bin.

intensely_human,

So you still have to take smoke into your lungs, but it’s not forcing a tobacco craving to start.
