Ah, I'm getting far enough in Duolingo to have my brain deciding to pattern-match its way into mnemonics which aren't actually helpful but which made me an absolute legend at multiple choice tests

sees לחם

My annoying brain: "Oh, it means bread because it ends with ם which is shaped like a loaf of bread"

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

@recursive What really made my brain do a backflip when learning Hebrew is that typed letters looks completely different from hand written letters. 🙃

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

@recursive Totally! It also made me appreciate the variations in English too (typed vs block written vs cursive).

A new family member joined us this week! Say hello to Lucy! 🥹

Our entire routine is thrown off right now as we figure out each other, work on the household integration, training, and everything else that comes with another adorable personality in mix.

Some garbage human literally threw her away. When she was rescued, she was skin and bones. The amazing thing though is that she is still the sweetest and gentlest dog I have ever met!

She spent a month getting medical care and then another month in foster care looking for her forever home. This week, she found it. Welcome home, Lucy!

Wow, Elon Musk must be desperate if he's re-adding blue checks to people like me who have long left the hellsite formerly known as Twitter. No, I'm not going back. Instead, I will continue my lifelong streak of not giving Musk a single penny of my money.

I think this is my favorite part; standing in the middle of a warehouse full of wood that’s waiting to be made into something. Looking at grain, color, size, durability. So much potential. 😊

Those who rise to the top in just about any discipline you care to name got there by high levels of self demand and self discipline. They chose the path, stuck to it, lived it, came through the hard and often gruelling pinch points and all to gain the ultimate mastery all skilled work demands.

Daily standup is not a reporting tool! Speak solely about things you need to collaborate on.

It's not there to showboat how much you work or for surveillance of your directs.

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

@OddDev Teams that I've worked on feel much more cohesive when we self manage our stand-ups with just "what you're working on" "any blockers" and just let things flow naturally.

When it devolves into going through every single card on a board 1 by 1, it's like a collaboration killer.

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

@anderseknert @jamigibbs @OddDev You’re right. When that happens I tend to zone out and the entire thing feels like a waste of everyone’s time.

I’m starting a new project this weekend and I’m actually following instructions to build a thing! 😱

My partner bought me the Veritas folding adirondack chair plans for my birthday last summer and spring is coming! I better get to work. 🌺🌻🌞

The front page for the Veritas plans for building an adirondack chair. There are two photos of the of a finished chair. One is in the upright position and the other os folded together.

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

I was extremely unprepared for how many pieces one single chair would need. 😩

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

Let me first say that I respect all forms of . There's skill involved in every single variation of it!

The last few weeks building this chair though has been my least favorite woodworking experience. I've had to use more machinery than ever before and it is so stressful. It's loud and messy and you always feel like you're a moment away from losing a body part.

But the chair build is coming along! It'll be 1 of 1 though. Back to hand tools for me after this.

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

An update from the project that will never end.

I'm technically on "step 6" but each step has like eight sub-steps in paragraph format written in 10 pt font with no diagrams except what's on the templates so it's been a slog.

It's got a wicked Game of Thrones vibe right now though until I can round off the top of the back rest.

The front of a partially finished Adirondack chair. There are pieces to the arm rest in front of it also partially finished.

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

They say the last 10% of a project is the hardest and that always ends up being the finish with .

This is cedar so I could have just thrown it outside and watched it gray naturally but I'm giving this Osmo UV-Protection Oil a try. It stinks but it's looking very nice so hoping it helps it last a little longer.

I might actually be done done done with this chair by tomorrow. 🤞

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

Tada! It took longer than I expected but it's finally done.

It will be interesting to see how the finish holds up over the summer. We get a ton of west facing sunshine for a good part of the day. For comparison, our fence is cedar too and we have decided to let it gray naturally.

The Adirondack chair is collapsed down to demonstrate the Veritas plan's folding feature.

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

Would I recommend these Veritas plans? It's a really big "it depends".

As a hand tool woodworker, this was kind of an unsatisfying project. The final product is awesome but the process was not fulfilling for someone who does not enjoy machine or following a set plan (like me).

But I think it did have just enough challenge to make it interesting and the chair is pretty darn cool!

Maybe this is a better angle on a flat surface.

i work with an exceptional TPM (technical project manager), and her style is basically to get the right people talking, and make sure everything is said explicitly without making assumptions

in a sense, she doesn’t do anything, she just listens and interjects questions but only if no one else is asking them

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh Communication and the people that facilitate it very well are so undervalued.

New month new project! I’m still working on my Danish cord weaving skills so hopefully this will be a seating bench when I’m done. Figuring out dimensions and getting things square now.

I also picked up a massive 7/4 S2 poplar board while I was at the hardwood store for $25 because why not.

Remind me again why we don’t build fine furniture entirely with Poplar? 🤔 It’s actually kind of beautiful and you can’t beat the price.

This weekend I did some shaping, sanding, and applied a finish to the walnut pieces ahead of glue-up.

I'm keeping track of the hours for this one too. Hand tool takes longer but looking at the time log really puts the term "starving artist" into perspective.

I haven't even started the weaving yet. 😮‍💨

Purchase wood: 1 hr
Planning, sketching: 3 hrs
Dimensioning: 8 hrs
Labeling, grain selection: 1hr
Joinery: 8 hrs
Shaping, Legs: 5 hrs
Sanding, Finish: 3 hrs

Total: 29 hrs

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

We are ready for weaving! I'm using just a couple of nails (154 to be precise).

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

I have the first side wrapped and this has basically been an exercise in how much cord can I waste. I did a rough guess on how much to pull out for the wrap and over-guessed by like 70 feet 🤦🏽‍♀️

At least I know now how much it should be for the next time! (It’s 80 ft)

Weaving time at this point is about 3 hrs.

jamigibbs,
@jamigibbs@hachyderm.io avatar

I'm calling this one done. Total time was around 35 hours; dimensioning, joinery, shaping, finishing, and weaving.

I can see myself making more of this style of bench and this one will be a great baseline design for future iterations. I think there are places that the design/execution can be modified and massaged a little more but there's also something comforting about the simplicity with it too.

Look down from above at a woven bench top and the top of a walnut leg.
