My office might be the most badass place in New York this afternoon, as we have Mdou Moctar and his band in studio for an interview and performance. Look for it soon on WNYC's Soundcheck podcast.

Just walked by a swarm of bees hanging out on a tree, which is not a sentence I have ever said before in New York City.

On my way home from a friend's 50th birthday party, and I gotta say us Gen X folks are really aging well. ☺️

A friend and fellow drummer just showed up to my practice studio with a case full of new cymbals from the company she endorses and I'm super jealous.

Today is the 102nd birthday of Charles Mingus, a huge inspiration and IMO one of the greatest of all American composers. I think of him almost every day when I walk by his former residence, which coincidentally is right across the street from the old Time Cafe where the Mingus Big Band played his music weekly for several years.

Doing a little late night recording for an upcoming project from an old friend. I'm using the house kit at work - Slingerland drums and Zildjian K cymbals. My favorite fringe benefit of the job. Membership has its privileges.

Never seen this before: on an uptown A train, two showtime dancers get on the train right in front of me. Before they can start their routine, two other guys at the other end of the car start shouting "showtime!" and cranking their music. The guys near me look at each other and roll their eyes. One of them watches the other guys and critiques their performance, while the other one states straight ahead with a blank expression all the way to 125th Street.

Offbeat Magazine published a wonderful obituary of John Sinclair with an emphasis on his New Orleans years.

https://www.offbeat.com/news/john-sinclair-1941-2024/

I will be presenting an hour-long tribute to John on my Crescent City Connection show this weekend, focusing on his jazz and blues inspired spoken word performances with his band the Blues Scholars. Catch it live on Saturday, 10am eastern on @WFMU's Rock 'n' Soul Radio stream.

RIP John Sinclair - manager of the MC5, founder of the White Panthers, marijuana activist, poet, author, spoken word performer, record producer and one hell of a radio DJ. I worked with him briefly at WWOZ and he was one of the most remarkable people I've ever met.

I am making final preparations for what is likely to be the craziest weekend of my entire life as a musician. Three gigs in 24 hours, all with Dark Streets playing Pogues music for St. Patrick's Day.

Tonight at Paddy Reilly's, 10pm to 2am
Tomorrow afternoon on the Ferrytale of New York Booze Cruise, 12 to 4pm
Tomorrow night at Mama Tried in Brooklyn, 6pm to 9pm

Wish me luck, and if you're in NYC please join us! The band is really sounding great. Tickets for the cruise are still available.

I'm playing at Freddy's in Brooklyn today with Sarah Mucho on vocals and Elliott Roth on piano. Sarah calls it the End Times Cabaret, and we'll be playing chilled out versions of songs people know and love. A perfect soundtrack from some late afternoon beers, if you ask me. 5 to 8pm at Freddy's Bar in Park Slope.

NP: Roy Haynes Hip Ensemble (1974)
Perfect jazz for a stormy NYC night. Roy played so beautifully with Bird and Dizzy and Sonny in the '40s and still sounded completely current and hip throughout the '70s, embracing fusion, avant garde and spiritual jazz like he was born into it. Great band with George Adams and a young Hannibal Marvin Peterson in the front line.

I'm finally listening to Clifton Chenier Live At Tipitina's, many weeks after it was delivered from the Tipitina's Record Club. Some great blues and zydeco on here, sourced from a soundboard recording on an old cassette from 1980. Tight band was playing straight fire. C.J. Chenier sounding good on alto sax (I didn't know he played sax!) but Sonny Landreth steals the show on guitar in his only recording with Chenier's band.

Via a reddit post, I just discovered a site called Life On The Road, which is a deep dive into every live recording of Frank Zappa (currently through 1977).

https://zappalifeontheroad.com/

Like many of you, I have been missing the old web, full of niche sites built out slowly by one or two experts on some nerdy topic. This Zappa site reminds me of what we used to find online back in the late '90s (albeit with a modern look).

In hyperlocal halal food news, Mamoun's recently raised their prices by 50 cents per item. A falafel sandwich is now $6.50 - still the best deal in town (in my opinion).

Meanwhile, I think the Rafiqi's halal truck near my office also raised prices, with most platters now being $9.75.

Our Christmas Eve plans fell through due to sick relatives, so we're listening to jazz albums instead.

Now playing: Jimmy Smith - Organ Grinder Swing. A perfect organ trio with Kenny Burrell and Grady Tate. And in honor of the holiday, this album has one of the best versions of Greensleeves ever put to tape.
