@flexghost Awesome choices on your part. Saw the Number of the Beast tour at the Hammersmith - great stuff. Selling England and Rumors - doesn't get much better.

Bob Marley Exodus and The Clash's London Calling - very high on that list. But my favorite? Something like The Jam "Sound Effects" or Art Pepper's "Meets the Rhythm Section". Tomorrow it will be something else.

Tonight it was a few cold IPAs with friends outside and a short whiskey when I got home.

Okanogen,
@Okanogen@mastodon.social avatar

@flexghost
Hahaha! That's awesome! I was lucky enough to see them in the mid-80's on their first US tour when it was all old guys.

After the 90s it seems that albums weren't as much a focus for artists, probably because media changed as the physical formats became less relevant. Of course, my personal bias factors in here quite a bit but it does seem like albums aren't talked about much as individual works anymore.

flexghost,
@flexghost@mastodon.social avatar

@InorganicFella Great picks!!

I agree. There are some underground artists that make full albums but it's basically singles now. Lots of good stuff to listen to regardless

InorganicFella,
@InorganicFella@sfba.social avatar

@flexghost I think the change makes sense to a fair extent. Vinyl LPs determined the length of an album and rock albums in the 70s were the length of an LP because an LP at 33 1/3rpm was designed to be long enough for a symphonic movement without changing sides. It makes less sense now to conform to a physical technology from 100 years ago that was designed to accommodate music from 500 years ago. My current favorites to listen to, Meg Myers and the band Night Club, happen to make good albums but I don't see it as necessary. I'm an odd ball in my musical needs too because my car is so old that it has a CD player and no way to interface with a phone.

@InorganicFella@sfba.social avatar

@flexghost The sax reminds me of I think the only sax music I've liked was Rio from Duran Duran which is a pretty good album too if you like 80s pop. Those guys can actually play their instruments and were something really new and different at that time. Maybe INXS had sax too? INXS: Kick was a pretty good pop-rock album in its day.

flexghost,
@flexghost@mastodon.social avatar

@InorganicFella Modern prog metal uses sax and its great

InorganicFella,
@InorganicFella@sfba.social avatar

@flexghost I would think tuba to be more appropriate for metal.

@flexghost And another one…Bridge of Sighs is an album I just discovered this year, it’s amazing. The label just released a 50th anniversary edition that has a blu ray with a 5.1 mix and a bunch of unreleased tracks…I just got it in the other day but haven’t listened to the 5.1 mix yet. But I’m confident it’s gonna be tits.

Still Guinness.

@flexghost This is I guess…prog-adjacent? It’s definitely on the technical side. But also just flat out rocks. I like this whole album but this is my favorite song on it (probably also influenced by the fact that it’s the first song of theirs I heard). I don’t think they’re around anymore, and they only put out 3 albums (or is it 2 albums and an EP? Don’t remember…)

I could say so much about this seminal album, but you'd be better off actually listening to it.

Drinking Texas Leaguer 2 Hopper India Pale Ale. It's OK, but not great. Texas does some IPAs that I prefer, like Axis from Blanco.
