Lovely bike parking outside a school... with no access from the street for the entire length of the property! The nearest curb cut is the first driveway past the school.

@mbonsma I’ve come to believe that people who don’t ride bikes actually think we ride on sidewalks.

The freedom to be able to walk and shop in places without worrying about a shooting is something Malaysians take for granted. I cannot imagine living with that kind of possibility in my life. You know what else we take for granted? The fact that Malaysia is free of most natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanoes and such.

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@liztai a tornado just hit Houston and I'm incredibly grateful that I have family here I can stay with while our power's out.

In the moment, I didn't even have to think twice about this privilege. Meanwhile there are thousands of people who are having to find their way to temporary cooling centers in the city to avoid heat stroke.

I took a photo of my mum's cousin at work. Turns out she runs Singapore's best rated wanton noodles shop! Very proud of her family for what they've built

@skinnylatte one of the few Singaporean dishes I have yet to find a >10% replication of in the U.S.

I think someone told me once there's some kind of fish broth in the soup. But it's also the shrimp to pork ratio in the wontons. I'm hungry....

👀 Not bad. Though honestly expected more from users 😤

@cheeaun @stefan does this count unlisted posts? I don't always alt-text unlisted post replies.

Well I didn't get any corrections (but found a small one of my own) so the re-implementation of the Greater Northshore Connector Bike Map - now with slightly more map height, contrast, and more easily seen lines - has dropped. Enjoy!

Go to:

https://github.com/solarbirdy/NorthshoreBikeMap/

and pick the Greater Northshore map.

Or if you don't mind .jpg and a little chopped off the bottom I guess you could just grab the preview here, it's at full resolution, just compressed a little and some of the bottom removed to fit.

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@moira don’t live in Seattle but I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for . We have a bike map but it is far from maintained. Wish there was a way multiple people can collaborate on a map.

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@moira how do they edit the jpg?

This is a good point. I’m a big proponent of provider diversity. Every cloud service you use should have a different login. Every piece of data you create should have an easily-accessible copy in your local file system. Everything on your computer should be backed up offsite with a separate cloud backup.

Do not put all your eggs into one cloud service basket. Do not use the same login for unrelated services. This rules out most of Apple’s cloud products for me. https://indieweb.social/@rickf/112395889511695940

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@drahardja I enjoy using Apple's cloud products as a set and forget backup service, especially since I'm primarily subscribed to it for my mother's backup needs.

But I definitely continue to operate my own system of personal local backups on the side.

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@drahardja a "backup to icloud" checkbox in Time Machine would be wonderful. But I suspect whole system backups would probably be prohibitively expensive and possibly even break bandwidth limits with some ISPs.

I've taken to picking my battles with backups. My videos/pictures are the most important. Multiple backups for those. All other personal docs on iCloud Drive and Time Machine.

Honest question — Why is open source software usually ugly?

Programming is just as much work as designing. Is it a cultural thing? Designers are less inclined to share?

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@robcee right on with the counter example. I bought multiple apps from @rizzi who is a renaissance artist of software. Beautiful apps with no bugs. I will buy anything he makes.

Honestly I don't personally need . It's just a great way to discover indie apps.

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@robcee I can only think of one example of an amazing cross platform FOSS app — Voyager. It has the advantage of building on the design of Apollo though. Which was also designed by a solo dev..... :thinking_rotate:

https://github.com/aeharding/voyager

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@robcee @pheonix another thougjt came to mind — most open source projects don’t have a front end. They’re libraries, CLIs, databases etc.

An end user facing open source app is relatively unique.

a cool aspect of using LLMs as a tutor is you can test your understanding of a topic, and in the process of validating your understanding, the LLM will also trigger aspects you haven’t thought of yet. So it ends up acting kind of like a rabbit hole, except you end up a lot closer to where you started, just with a much deeper understanding

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@kellogh learning with LLM is one of those leaps in education only last seen when Wikipedia first came into the picture.

With some supervision, we could leave day to day personalized learning to an LLM and let humans teach far more important topics like critical thinking and problem solving.

All of the talk over the last few weeks about startups shipping unfinished hardware reminds me, and not for the first time, what a triumph the is. The whole @panic crew worked so hard to deliver something that fulfilled expectations and then some against challenges (like a global pandemic and supply chain fiasco) that would have leveled others.

jeromechoo,
@jeromechoo@masto.ai avatar

@film_girl i want to love it but I’m far more in love with the idea of it than playing it.
