This time table diagram from 1923 by the Finnish National Railways is so cute. I would be overjoyed if connections like this were restored. My personal Solarpunk utopia is ”what if pre-1950 but without the coal and with modern electronics”.

Funny how the mind works. We were listening to the Spanish Eurovision entry in the car with the kids, they asked what “zorra” means. Said I’m not really sure. This morning, half-dreaming, I remember clearly that it means a female fox, vixen.

Also an interesting thing is that the Spanish and English connotations of zorra and vixen are somewhat similar, as also being a denigrating term for a woman. E.g. Finnish and Swedish lack those.

Crowdsourced algorithm test: hit me up with some music recommendation?
The more unexpected the better.
On the lines of experimental, fourth world, early music, non-western, electronic, contemporary composition… ok literally the Wire mag stuff basically :D

I’m just thinking of how the city of Salo (a small-ish municipality on the way from Helsinki to Turku) paid some consultant like 20k€ to do a plan for a Hyperloop connection from Helsinki to Stockholm via Salo.

Our little agency just got awarded graphic designer of the year. This was a great honor and a pleasant surprise to us! Information design—in Finland at least—tends to be somewhat overlooked in the graphic design field.

This 2018 article is getting a slightly unfair bashing in the Fradulent Archeology FB group, due to a clickbaity headline. The thought experiment here is interesting:
”So, could researchers find clear evidence that an ancient species built a relatively short-lived industrial civilization long before our own?”

Reflection on cleaning in the children’s room:
”Baby Born” dolls are a perfect example of product design where the main selling points are features that no-one ever uses after trying them out once or twice.

Further observations from re-reading Lord of the Rings:
– Tolkien clearly didn’t care for battle depictions. When Sauron is defeated, he just quickly moves on to other things, like Gandalf.
– The romance between Faramir and Eowyn gets multiple pages, the wedding of Arwen and Aragorn is not even described.
– Aragorn gives the land back to the people of Ghan-Buri-Ghan, that were “hunted like animals”. Despite the many racist elements in the books, this feels well before its time.

Is this unique to Helsinki, or does this happen elsewhere too now?

A loose ”new urban environmentalist” movement, that is very interested in protecting urban trees and parks, and against what is perceived as ”too much housing development” but also, curiously opposes cycling, sometimes even vehemently.

Phones should have a language-agnostic input option where you get to choose supported character sets. It could be combined with a multi-lingual spell check that learns the languages you type in.

I don’t necessarily want to switch to the Icelandic keyboard to type an occasional place name correctly.

Anxiously waiting for the moment that FontExplorer Pro 6, bought back in… 2016? eventually stops working.

Is it back to MacOS font manager or are there any comparable apps for this? Monotype now redirects to their subscription service, but I just want to MANAGE fonts!

Random question that came to mind after re-reading Lord of the Rings. LotR started a lot of fantasy tropes, but the magic as depicted in Tolkien’s work is generally pretty indirect and subtle. Gandalf lights fires and Saruman has his commanding voice. The One Ring’s invisibility is perhaps the most straightforward magic effect depicted.

So, historically, what books ramped up the level of fantasy magic? Or did it rather happen in D&D?

Impossible to overstate how important Processing has been (and still is), both as software and as a concept of working in the intersection of programming and design.
