Interesting!
Blog post discussing key results of a study on professional cargo bike adoption in Finland:
–A lack of awareness of the utility and benefits of cargo bikes
–The prevailing perception of parcel logistics as automobile-based
–Lack of financial incentives
–Infrastructural limitations in terms of the inadequate path widths suitable for cargo bikes, and winter maintenance
–Cost constraints: inadequate funding for bicycle planning in cities

A friend shared this … diagram with me. I think this is a very good example of forcing a poorly chosen metaphor onto your data until maximum confusion ensues. The featured chart types and chosen examples also feel pretty random.

Neat! A cargo bike guide website with search function and classification by use cases. Some bikes are missing a bit of details, but a nice project.

Have the winters in Helsinki become more difficult for pedestrians, or are people these days just whiny snowflakes that want ”summer conditions in the midst of winter” (except, no-one is actually asking for that)?

Tried a quick experiment with FMI data for 31 years. There is a lot of variation but it seems at a glance that ”stripy” years with much snow and alternating warm and cold periods, causing slippery conditions, are becoming more common, and long cold periods rarer.

Curious how your computer creates and preserves this digital microhistory of past visited wifis. Like these here, a bunch of networks used on a trip to Iceland back in 2016. This was even with a different computer.

This is a lovely non-fiction comic book about how cycling was a dominant form of travel in Finland until car-oriented urban planning marginalized it from the 1960s onwards. It has wider relevance, so hoping it gets translated.

If German uses KI (Künstliche Intelligenz) for AI and Spanish uses IA (Inteligencia Artifical), et cetera, then why can’t we use TÄ in Finnish, for TekoÄly?

Typographical detail time:
The book ”Elolliset” (eng. ~ ”living beings”) by Iida Turpeinen features geographical coordinates with minutes and seconds of arc. Instead of the correct prime symbols, quotation marks have been used. This is a common mistake and can happen e.g. if straight quotation marks are used and then replaced. Also, surprisingly many fonts miss these symbols, but as they are simple in form they can usually be borrowed.

Seeing the number of cars in predicaments due to the snow in today is a good reminder that cars in themselves are perhaps more sensitive than bikes to winter conditions.

We’re just accustomed to such high levels of winter road maintenance for motor vehicles here that it isn’t noticed.

If you slip into a snow wall with your bike, you don’t need a showel to free it.

I thought I had figured out a clever way to automatically add alt texts to images for InDesign using and the 'ImageDescription' field, but then I learned that said field is ASCII only.

The XMP data could support unicode, but working with that is apparently a total pain.

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

YES solved it.

If you need to programmatically add alt texts to image metadata with non ASCII letters for use in e.g. , use Exiftool. It works like a charm! https://exiftool.org/exiftool_pod.html

Simple as:
exiftool -s -AltTextAccessibility='Pig saysBröther give me some öats' edited-exif-ps.tif
Your alt text is now readable in as From XMP:Alt Text (Accessibilty) under Object Export Options in InDesign.

The Gates belt drive is a fantastic invention, but I sure wish someone would make at least a partial enclosure for it.

Literally the only thing that breaks these is gravel, so would make a lot of sense to at least have the option of, like, just maybe… stopping gravel getting in the drive?

This time around I remembered to check a video before disconnecting the Enviolo. It is super easy if you do it in the right order (first the long bit, then the little bit, reverse when remounting it). https://youtu.be/aim5f2rj-dY?si=0pHQXW41TXhFwdZR

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

@Auringon_sikio

Mikähän on tämän kulttuurihistoria?
