Are agile scrums an outdated idea?

Here's a video on YouTube making the case for why agile was an innovative methodology when it was first introduced 20 years ago.

However, he argues these days, daily scrums are a waste of time, and many organisations would be better off automating their reporting processes, giving teams more autonomy, and letting people get on with their work:

https://youtu.be/KJ5u_Kui1sU?si=M_VLET7v0wCP4gHq

A few of my thoughts.

First, it's worth noting that many organisations that claim to be "agile" aren't, and many that claim to use agile processes don't.

Just as a refresher, here's the key values and principles from the agile manifesto: http://agilemanifesto.org/

  1. Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
  2. Working software over comprehensive documentation
  3. Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
  4. Responding to change over following a plan
  • Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software.
  • Welcome changing requirements, even late in development. Agile processes harness change for the customer's competitive advantage.
  • Deliver working software frequently, from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, with a preference to the shorter timescale.
  • Business people and developers must work together daily throughout the project.
  • Build projects around motivated individuals. Give them the environment and support they need, and trust them to get the job done.
  • The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.
  • Working software is the primary measure of progress.
  • Agile processes promote sustainable development. The sponsors, developers, and users should be able to maintain a constant pace indefinitely.
  • Continuous attention to technical excellence and good design enhances agility.
  • Simplicity--the art of maximizing the amount of work not done--is essential.
  • The best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from self-organizing teams.
  • At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly.

Your workplace isn't agile if your team is micromanaged from above; if you have a kanban board filled with planning, documentation, and reporting tasks; if your organisation is driven by processes and procedures; if you don't have autonomous cross-functional teams.

Yet in many "agile" organisations, I've noticed that the basic principles of agile are ignored, and what you have is micromanagement through scrums and kanban boards.

And especially outside software development teams, agile tends to just be a hollow buzzword. (I once met a manager at a conference who talked up how agile his business was, and didn't believe me when I said agile was originally a software development methodology — one he revealed he wasn't following the principles of.)

Spot.on. my business has adopted an agile mindset across the entire org, but it’s still waterfall, because IT have so much governance in place and outsourcing contracts that prevent teams from actually working on things in a fluid and agile way. Every member of a squad is on multiple projects, plus our systems are so broad we cannot have a resource from each source system dedicated to a squad.

Secondly, no documentation? We moved from an on-prem Oracle DB to GCP so that we would have one central place for data and across all business units… there was no documentation and we had to spend the next 4 years reverse engineering the data marts because all the IP left the business… it took 4 years because of the previous point.

And because it’s big corporate business, you have to make it work otherwise you lose your big bonus etc etc

And don’t dare question the method

bought in 2020 … value of property has increased 50%, land value has doubled - which helps if i need to refinance as the amount owing is less than 80% of the value so i get interest rate discounts. I border a new-ish estate of mcmansions but i have double the block size. If i had some significant cash behind me i’d knockdown, divide the block and build 2 homes. but i dont, but i can dream. i’m happy… not about interest rates but it’s for the future/kids

I figure it’s just different responsibilities… if I didnt have kids I’d be doing more of what I want to do (like fireworks and motorcycling).I had to put that on pause for 12 years or so, and just now I’m starting to do more for me. It was a joint decision that I would be a present dad rather than career focussed. And to be honest it’s been great being able to switch off work and enjoy my personal time. Family circumstances have changed and ironically I’ve had to be even more present but with COVID changing the work force expectations,at least in my business, to be more flexible, that it all works.

I still feel 16 at heart and think I can get out of a chair really easily, but I can’t…my joints are stiffening and that really sucks.

This happens in my business all the time…the test FTP IP address is left in the code and shit falls apart costing us millions… They hold a PIR and then it happens again.

Obtained my motorbike licensed recently…really enjoying learning how to get good at riding a motorcycle…I don’t get time.tonride as it is and I really need to make time to do slow manoeuvres as this is what is required to pass the next stage of licensing.

I love seeing live music, however, where I love it’s just not an option to do each week. I love listening to records… me and the kid put a record on when doing the housework…teaching them the ways!

Used to play video games every day for a few minutes…but haven’t played one in 5 months.

Love baking baguettes, couronnes, bagels, pizza

Has HP printers always been this bad? (sh.itjust.works)

So my mother recently bought an ET-2800, By HP we had an HP printer before and we got a new one because the old one would not work with my sister’s Windows 11 Laptop. So I had to set it up for my mother, the manual said you can use it without the app. But there was no way to physically do that. Anyway, I downloaded the app on...

I have an Epson ecotank… you pay upfront for the printer and on the flipside the ink is about $15AUD per bottle…but that will get you 5000 sheets.

Sara Lee Crumbles as company heads to voluntary administration (headliner writers must've waited their whole career for that pun) (www.smh.com.au)

Aussie dessert makers Sara Lee have filed for voluntary administration as they seek a new buyer for the company and are currently undergoing restructuring so their staff don’t lose their jobs.

Have also been a fan since '92! Fat Mike, and I know it wasn’t just him, but he kinda went off the rails there for a bit. For a while… it got me down…I guess it was a ploy to stay a little relevant, or to get out of a business deal.

  • Going off like prawns in the sun/frog in a sock (really good time or a raving loony)

  • I could eat the arse out of a dead rhino/dingo (really hungry)

I have 2 kitties and this happened all the time. I had to introduce a third litter box for it to stop happening. And as others have said, clean them out every day.

I’m not agym.go-er or a trainer… aerobic workouts. I lost 30kg over 12months just by walking 10000 purposeful steps a day and doing 2 rounds of interval training (HIIT) a night. Once my fitness came back/got some fitness, I started introducing weights… and more importantly, I watched what I ate. Specifically, i stopped all sometimes foods and stopped eating bread. This worked for me. But you can’t go from little to no exercise tomall the exercise. Work up to it

I live in major city and drove to work nearly every day…but I reckon it was never more than 25mins to work… 5 - 25km a day
