The Threads algorithm constantly signal boosts rage bait from nobody accounts about the most mundane things and slightest contrarian opinions. It's real bad

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@stroughtonsmith This seems like a good use of AI. Give me a feature to mute any post by a financial “influencer” asking about switching to Android. That would clear up about half the garbage I see (and make room for all new garbage!)

The icons for my FTP/S3/Source apps look like folders with a glyph on the outside.

What would be a good glyph for WebDAV?

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@palmin Maybe externaldrive.connected.to.line.below or rectangle.connected.to.line.below to show a drive or computer attached to a network?

it’s been 7 years since AIM shut down, aka the best personal communication network and I have to admit it’s really totally gone whenever I update friend details in my Contacts app and end up removing their AIM account field.

@mathowie I never remove these! I still keep my Compuserve ID from 1986 in my contact card just to surprise and delight other olds.

Why is there no good options for a blog anymore? Indie options like micro.blog just feel half-baked.

Options like WordPress are more full-featured but I loathe the direction they are going with blocks.

I like Ghost but it is just not cohesive to a microblogging format.

I just want a platform that offers support for long posts (essays), short posts (link posts), and micro psots (tweets). Make it look nice on a site, and load well on an RSS reader. I am at a loss of what to use honestly.

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@jeffperry One thing I would LOVE (I do it now with Shortcuts, but an automated way would be awesome):

Follow my Mastodon/Instagram/Twitter/whatever and turn each social post into a native micro-post on my site. Not an embed (all my Twitter embeds broke at one point).

Grab the text, grab the image(s), grab the hashtags. Make that a blog post.

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@jeffperry Here’s an old post about the Instagram shortcut. I’m sure I’ve edited over the years, but it still holds up. I need to update it to grab multiple images now that I look at it.

https://www.cocktailsandcoffee.com/saving-instagram-posts-to-the-blog

It takes an Instagram URL:

https://www.instagram.com/p/C58uTR9xJyU/?igsh=MTc4MmM1YmI2Ng==

and creates a simple post like this one from this morning:
https://www.cocktailsandcoffee.com/well-this-isnt-ideal

@jeffperry The one thing I like about doing it manually is not every stupid thing I post ends up on my blog 🙃

Into the idea of car camping?

These "rooftop tents" turn into a car or SUV tent that sits on top of your vehicle, built in ladder to climb up, cushy bed to sleep on.

Take a look...

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@wa7iut @davemark Would you rather have badgers at the bottom of the ladder, or have your tent on the ground with the badgers? 🧐

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@davemark I’ve had one for years. It’s the best way to camp if you can get a vehicle to your campsite.

I get a kick out of knowing that ESPN’s CMS uses Markdown. (I’m guessing the author mistakenly put a space between the square brackets and the parentheses.)

https://apple.news/AT6_sOOi7SHeqFdlIKyVIXA

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@gruber I can absolutely verify it does. I used to run the product team for ABC/Disney's CMS. ESPN shares the code base. I led the project to add Markdown support in 2015. (Our CMS validated Markdown, though...)

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@chrisfinazzo @gruber I prefer reference links when I write, but I’m not gonna try to get anyone learning Markdown for the first time to understand that whole system.

Yes.

Did I still do it?

I see so much chatter about the and people comparing it to the iPhone’s first year. I did this myself a few weeks ago.

But that’s missing the boat. It’s not at all like the first year of the iPhone or the Watch, or anything else.

This is Apple experimenting in public in a way they’ve never really done before. Saying it’s a flop or a success after 2 months is just an opinion based on almost no data.

I don’t know what’s happened to iCloud email the last couple weeks, but something is seriously broken with spam filtering.

It was never as good as Google, but was generally OK at filtering out most spam. Lately, it seems like it’s not even trying anymore. Dozens of messages a day end up in my inbox that are obvious spam.

And those end up as notifications on my Lock Screen. It’s bonkers.

I get why YouTube shipped this. It will undoubtedly be a sellable ad spot within weeks. It should be able to be switched off, especially for Premium subscribers.

But Apple allowing this to get through App Review is what makes people complain about the app review process. https://duck.haus/@joesteel/112260405236680475

I mean it wasn’t MY apartment on fire. Just our cable box.

It would have been much more on brand if I had either started said fire or been in the burning building. My brand is slipping. https://mastodon.social/@hotdogsladies/112260842736148777

jimmylittle,

@alexcox My dad used to work for the power company, he says they call them “stringing blocks”, and they’re made to help run new cables and keep them off the ground until they’re properly attached to the poles or buildings. Once everything is locked down, it should be removed.

Soooooo what do we think about this reason for not including full text in a personal blog’s RSS feed?

TBH it bugs the hell out of me, but maybe I’m the minority here.

jimmylittle,
@jimmylittle@hachyderm.io avatar

@matt For me, it depends on the content. I blog about silly tech stuff and I don’t use ads or have any monetization outside of Amazon links. Full text feed from me, nothing to lose.

If I wanted to make money off my blog, or if formatting is really important (like a design blog, or a math/science blog that uses tons of LaTeX and other custom formatting, then I’d drive people to the page with RSS summaries.

As someone who buys his own health insurance every year, what's super cool is when you spend hours picking a plan that covers your providers and then just a few months into the year the insurance company send you a letter saying they're no longer covering those providers effective immediately. I find that to be very cool. It's just a fun, exciting perk of our world-class healthcare... “system” is the wrong word. “Needlessly expensive Rube Goldberg machine.” That's more like it.
