hm I'm on Thunderbird 116.0b2...not complaining but I guess maybe scoop pulls from the dev builds.

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@specter If it helps... I am using Thunderbird v5.0 :-)

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@specter Heh, it is definitely before they added IRC. I swear I thought they put IRC in there around like v38 or so. I just keep installers for software I use so that when an application gets "awful" I can just stay behind.

As for "how"... I use Stunnel to provide the TLS connections, and everything else just works™. As for "why"... well, IRC is part of it, along with all the other junk they have piled in there. One of the biggest reasons is that all-one-colour non-system skin that makes it hard to tell which application has focus.

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@specter I couldn't help myself... I think it was v15 when they added IRC support, which is only about a year after v5 was released.

https://website-archive.mozilla.org/www.mozilla.org/thunderbird_releasenotes/en-us/thunderbird/15.0/releasenotes/?uri=/thunderbird/releasenotes

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@specter Oh boy... well, the v5 download is 18MB while the v115 download is 77MB. On initial startup v115 connects to:

location.services.mozilla.com
ocsp.digicert.com
live.thunderbird.net
autoconfig.thunderbird.net
support.mozilla.org
www.mozilla.org
start.thunderbird.net
thunderbird-settings.thunderbird.net
services.addons.thunderbird.net
aus.thunderbird.net
aus5.mozilla.org

which is less than some email clients, but is more than I would want from an organization that tries to sell itself as being concerned about user privacy.

I don't see IRC, Matrix, Odnoklassniki, or XMPP as being a core component of an email client. Mozilla should not be "partnering" with any email provider to suggest email services. There is of course the geolocation crap that gets deeper and deeper. Thunderbird "trusts" Cloudflare by default for DNS queries, storing reporting, and telemetry. Sending "technical and interaction data" is also enabled by default.

Side note: the request to have OMEMO support added to their XMPP client implementation has had zero traction in the eight years since it was made.

And what did they remove? The ability to search about:config on the value field. Someone spent actual time on not letting me search my configs based on what they are set to.

Finally, I don't like skins. I have a window manager, applications should just use it. Having a giant useless band of grey at the top of my applications isn't helping anything. :-(

Phew!

    the only argument we should be making for mastodon at this point is that you can post as much ass and vag as you want and as long as you mark it and use the CW feature no one cares because a)we own it ourselves and make our own rules and b) no one is trying to make this a safe space for Brands™

    @specter Seriously eh! I mean, what IS the aversion to things that are not made or managed by Maxi Super Mega Uber Corp? I feel like I live in some kind of backwards reality where rather than questioning how many necks Supercorp Inc stepped on to get where they are, people are skeptical of some asshole like me who has been bitching about digital privacy and security since he ran a BBS.

    If you think that the proper unit of measurement for "success" is the dollar, the sterling, the rupee, the ruble, the digital coin, the peso, the schmekel, the shekel, or any other so-called currency... then you may have fucked up somewhere along the way.

    I just wanted to give a tip about those writing alt text.

    I thank everyone who does so! It makes my Mastodon experience so much more amazing!

    But a tip, though:

    If you are describing, say, text on a screen, it would be very appreciated if you describe not just the screen that exists, but what is on the screen. Here is an example.

    If you say, "A screen shot of my phone's screen, showing a post on Mastodon." it doesn't much help because I ask myself (since I cannot see the image) "Yes? What does it say?

    A better example would be, say:

    "A screen shot of my phone's screen. There is a Mastodon post that reads:
    'This is my amazing post!'"

    It really, really helps me understand the full context.

    jmhorner,
    @jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

    @BrailleScreen I have a web site that I have been maintaining for a couple of decades now and which has almost no readership. I often try to put a photo in each post to dress it up a bit, even though I know it may never be seen by anyone but random web scrapers. The site is manually generated, meaning I do not have some fancy editor interface like Wordpress and I do not use a static site gerator like Hugo. Because of this I have often allowed the file name to serve as my alt text out of sheer laziness.

    Since I am stuck in town today and it is hot and humid outside, I think I'll spend some time today improving my alt texts. Thanks for the motivation. :-)

    jmhorner,
    @jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

    @BrailleScreen As it turns out, this didn't go well. I just edited my most recent post and promptly opened it in LibreWolf browser to see the updated alt text... and it didn't show anything. I am accustomed to seeing a popup-when-hover block showing the alt text when I mouse over the image. I checked another of my posts and that one didn't show me a popup of the alt text either. So I used a little StartPage-Fu and found this Mozilla article

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/838888

    which basically says that Firefox does not use alt= for popup-when-hover text anymore, it uses title= instead. Could you please tell me if your browser application is able to use title instead of alt or as well as alt? I figure if I am going to do this, I may as well do it right. :-)

    jmhorner,
    @jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

    @BrailleScreen That would be awesome... thanks! I setup a test post here

    https://snork.ca/posts/2023-07-07-a-test-post-for-alt-text/

    and have made sure to include the filename, alt, and title with the image. I also have a caption that sits inside a CSS box which surrounds the image. I'd love to hear which pieces of that puzzle work best for you. I'd also love to hear which of those pieces you think would work best for someone using audio-based reading software.

    jmhorner,
    @jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

    @BrailleScreen Sweet, thanks! So although Mozilla is not going to play along, alt is more prominent in your setup, and I would suspect it is the same for many others. I'll continue to lean on alt rather than title. Much appreciated eh! :-)
